It is with great pleasure to announce that we have housed various aspects from Gear and MusicTalks at the De Brakke Grond and Compagnietheater; two venues expertly suited to Playground’s needs. These central and established venues will play host to a plethora of high-calibre music-tech firms and MusicTalks. I’m especially looking forward to hearing Hans Zimmer talk about his career in Hollywood, as well as experiencing the new 4DSound system. Playground 2014 will also be home to a new and improved Art Route, a contemporary selection of music films, a series of excellent pop-up stores and exhibitions throughout Amsterdam and more concerts and showcases than you can imagine. Playground is the part of ADE for you to become really immersed in; so kick back, and make yourself at home. In addition to ADE’s 2000+ performances, ADE Play- ground offers a (largely) free-access daytime pro- gramme of dance-related exhibitions, music-related movies and documentaries, DJ showcases, gear master classes and public Q&As at various notable locations in the city’s downtown area and beyond. Open to conference participants as well, ADE Playground aims to spread the congenial and informal atmosphere of the ADE Conference to the city streets, bridging the mental and spatial gap between the dance professionals at ADE’s daytime hubs, Felix Meritis, the Dylan Hotel and the various sub-conference centres, and the audience that makes ADE’s club nights such a success. ADE Play- ground breaks down into five themes: Art, Movies, Gear. MusicTalks and Pop-Up. A fair share of the ADE Playground activities are free- entry, however, some are only open to ADE Card holders. Here are some ADE Playground highlights, but for the full programme and detailed info, see the Playground sec- tion of the ADE website. ADE 2014 11 “ADE Playground is a daytime event that extends the spirit of the club nights into daytime hours” ART Art is one of the pillars of ADE Playground. Following up the 2013 events, held at multiple galleries around Am- sterdam, a series of entry-free exhibitions will highlight various aspects of music and club culture. The Uncov- ered expo illustrates the indissoluble link between music and album cover art, displaying original artwork by a host of artists that graced the cover of notable dance re- leases. (Mini Galerie, 12 am–6 pm, October 15-October 19). Official opening: October 16, 6 pm-9 pm. The Open Draw is an international network of emerging and established artists and illustrators who work with various aspects of art. Sketch artists will be sent out to document Amsterdam Dance Event Playground, con- ference and festival; each artist according to their own style. During ADE, The Open Draw will present these sketches and artworks in an exhibition that concludes with the finale on Sunday. (Mixtup, 2 pm-11pm, Saturday 12 pm; Sunday 6 pm, October 16-19). FILM Under the Films @ ADE banner, Melkweg Cinema will present a selection of music-related movies and docu- mentaries. I Dream Of Wires is an independent docu- mentary about the history, demise and resurgence of the modular synthesizer, featuring interviews with over 100 modular musicians, inventors and enthusiasts. (Wednes- day, 7:30 pm-9:30pm, October 15). Rewind 4Ever: The History of UK Garage, the debut documentary by producer-director (and music fan) Alex Lawton, retells the rise, fall and recent resurgence of the British phenomenon that is UK Garage. It is the first ever in-depth account of the genre and features interviews with UK garage’s major players, among others Karl ‘Tuff Enuf’ Brown, Matt ‘Jam’ Lamont, The Dreem Team, Artful Dodger and Wookie (Friday, 7 pm-8:30pm, October 17).

Titel doctoraalscriptie De dj als superster Universiteit Universiteit van Utrecht Auteur J.H. Meeuwissen Studierichting Taal en Cultuurstudies Adres Waalstraat 93hs Specialisatie Kunstbeleid en Management Woonplaats Amsterdam Eerste lezer drs. Ingmar Leijen Telefoon 06-51819744 Tweede lezer dr.

www.melodicbeatspodcast.com [email protected] A Chat with the DJ – Around Us MB: You Have very kindly agreed to do a mix for the podcast but I feel its always good for listeners to get to know you a little with a 5 step Q & A.. So we know that you play the deep, melodic and progressive style but when did you start to DJ and what made you take the step from punter to player ?? (as in the DJ kind) Answer: Jan: I started dj-ing in 1999. Soon after that I had a residentie in the famous Amsterdam club MAZZO. Gaby: For me it was 1989 when I start dj-ing in a bar (Cranes Palace on the famous Rembrandtplein), after that tired to play the commercial stuff and did my own events (S.M.A.R.T) and residency in Club TIME (ITEM), all in Amsterdam. MB: If you can share one musical memory with us, as a DJ or punter, which has lodged itself in the memory bank, what is it?? Answer: Jan: Many to tell! From the warmups and closing sets in my residentie clubs MAZZO and Club PANAMA in Amsterdam for john digweed, Sasha, Danny Howells, Dubfire, Sander Kleinenberg, Groove Armada And many many more. I have a lovely memory when Faithless Maxi Jazz was Booked the in my club Panama. He and I went having drinks backstage and talked long about music and smoked some joints. Really cool guy! Gaby: Also too many memories, but two are engraved in my memory; Playing at a private party in Ibiza before José Padilla took over, and second playing in Miami at the V-Lounge.

Music Jos Schuring From Louis Andriessen, Ton Koopman, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Within Temptation and DJ Tiësto to Frans Brüggen or Han Bennink and Wouter Hamel: Dutch music of every conceivable genre is well represented beyond the country’s borders. The current music culture in the Netherlands is a result of a long history coupled with the recent past in which the differences between conventional ideas and contemporary styles fight it out in an exciting battle. From the very beginning the fighters for the old and new music have joined forces to resist the mainstream. Both camps challenged the nineteenth-century-style structure of musical society, with its insatiable appetite for the symphonies of Beethoven and Mahler. The end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s saw the emergence of Reinbert de Leeuw’s Schönberg Ensemble, the New Ensemble under Ed Spanjaard, Frans Brüggen’s Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra under Ton Koopman. Together with countless other ensembles, they have enriched the musical life of the Netherlands. In the New YorkTimes the Instant Composers Pool, often called the ICP Orchestra, was recently hailed as the continuing flagship of the Dutch avant-garde. In the meantime, numerous current or former ICP musicians have achieved international success on their own merits. Saxophonist Ab Baars and trombonist Wolter Wierbos tour outside the Netherlands on a regular basis. And the young Wouter Hamel and British-Dutch Benjamin Herman have also achieved considerable success abroad. Dutch pop music is just too good to be confined to its home in the Netherlands.
