The Concours tent area was on a hill and from there we could look out over our PMCs that were arranged in a “U” with an expansive, grassy field in the center. We began the day with dough- nuts and coffee, courtesy of long time member Bill Cronkhite, which were especially appreciated by those members who got to the park early to help set up. Our celebrated Concours is the premier event of the spring calendar and our host and hostesses planned and executed a stellar event. Members from the San Diego region joined us in displaying their beautiful PMCs and we appreciate their participation. Chief Judge Tom Mercurio recruited a number of judges and combined them into teams, with each team led by a very experienced team captain. Connie Dwoskin designed and arranged for the judges’ hats and there was a colorful sea of bright red caps on the field as the judging teams set off to complete the difficult task of selecting the winners in the various classes. The judging of the PMCs is a huge component of the Concours and we want to thank and acknowledge the volunteer team captains and judges, without whom the Concours could not be held. If this is Battery Replacement on a not done, there is the possibility of a wrench on the positive terminal 2006 Bentley Flying Spur touching something grounded, leading to welding the wrench to By Brock Backlund something it shouldn’t be welded to. This damages things, like one’s temper, and is not recommended. Once the negative terminal Today’s cars are more powerful, more reliable, and smoother battery clamp is removed, the positive terminal battery clamp may than ever. Gas mileage is up and repair frequency is down. They be removed, along with the fuse box which is attached to the cable really are marvels. But there’s a cost. Today’s cars are efficient and marginally clipped to the battery itself. The vent tube is then and run well, but they are complex. In my 2006 Bentley Continental removed and the bolt for the hold down bar is unscrewed. Moving Flying Spur, for example, there are 36 controllers working furiously the bar aside allows the battery to be removed. The old battery will to keep the engine, transmission, brakes, air conditioning, and all have a vent plug in the vent hole not used by the vent tube. There’s a lot of data available, and many may be removed with relative safety. This battery is a bit more opportunities to program the computers to make the car completely complicated to remove because the luggage compartment fuse box undrivable. must be removed for clearance and the cables on the battery fuse box must be removed. Since I spent all of my money buying the car, I had nothing left for the dealer’s mechanics and would have to do the maintenance work myself. I knew that I would have to replace the brakes eventually, and I had read that I needed a scanner to do that (to release the parking brake so the rear rotors could be removed), so I ordered a scanner from Ross-Tech and hooked it up to an old laptop I had lying around.

A scan of the car revealed many fault codes, almost all of which were of the “low supply voltage on occasion” type. Most, but not all, of the modules were reporting a problem with the battery voltage. In addition, the scanner showed that one of the controllers did a “load shed,” turning off devices and systems to conserve battery power. The car is eight years old and I’m pretty sure the original batteries were still in the car, so it wasn’t a big surprise that the batteries needed to be replaced. I took advantage of a recent technical seminar at Ronny’s Garage to delve into the mysteries of Bentley power.

The Flying Spur uses two batteries: one for the starter motor and one for the rest of the car. If one battery fails, the other can take over its duties, so it’s a nice backup. The main system battery is a Group 49/H8 AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery, whereas the starter battery is a Group 47/H5 AGM battery. AGM batteries are The luggage compartment fuse box has two locking tabs that maintenance-free, but cost more than wet cell lead-acid batteries. must be pressed in to lift the box up and out of the keyhole slots in the bracket that holds it in place. The locking tabs are on either side Changing the batteries on the Flying Spur can be a bit of a of the fuse box. challenge and requires the use of a scanner and a workshop manual. I got the workshop manual from Flying Spares. In a nutshell, the procedure is to remove the starter battery and then remove the main system battery. Once both batteries are out, the new main system battery is installed and then the new starter battery is installed. If this sequence isn’t followed, if the main battery is removed while the starter battery is still in place, there is the possibility that the battery isolator explosive charge will go off. This is discouraged. If there is an accident, the charge will go off, isolating the starter battery in an attempt to limit the likelihood of a fire. Removing the starter battery is relatively simple: everything is in plain view and all that has to be unscrewed are the battery clamps and the bolt for the hold down bar.

The battery fuse box must also be removed, once the negative terminal battery clamp is disconnected. There are several cables in the fuse box that must be removed first. Additionally, there is a connector to the right of the fuse box that must be removed. This connector is a locking connector and the lock is accessed from the rear. It cannot be easily actuated until the fuse box itself is removed. Taking the cover off the fuse box, removing the cables, then loosening the positive terminal battery clamp will allow the fuse box to be rotated so the locking connector can be removed. While the bolts in the plastic fuse box are generally retained in place, I found that two fell out when I removed the box. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 8)

MAY 2014 7 The Spirit of Ecstasy Celebrating 50 Years (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7) The Cover Story “It Takes a Village” By Sherry Stern

Exactly six years and two weeks after I inherited my Silver Cloud, my girl and I joined the Concours field at Santa Anita this year for the first time. It’s been a long road! This article is really an open letter to everyone in the club. Your encouragement, support, smiles, technical insights and restoration advice buoyed me during the lengthy time it took to close the estate and restore the car.

Originally owned by the actor Louis Jourdan, my brother was the second owner and purchased the car in 1969. When I got her she had been garaged for 25 years with the top down, was shabby and did not run.

I am particularly indebted to Gary Prothero, owner of Scott Motors in West Los Angeles, who did the mechanical restoration. There is a hold down bar to the right (car front) side of the Gary, in large measure, is responsible for turning me into a Car Girl: battery. Removing the bolt for the bar, as was done for the starter he was unfazed by my million questions, never talked down to me, battery, allows the bar to slide out of position so the battery can be traced the car systems for me when the car was on the lift and even removed. gave me driving lessons! Installation is the reverse of removal. The main system battery is replaced first, with the positive terminal battery clamp Gene Towle suggested 1963 period license plates that add a attached first, then the fuse box cables and connector, the luggage nice touch; Santos Guerra fabricated some parts for my girl, while compartment fuse box, and finally the negative terminal battery his talented brother Virgilio painted the firewall. Bill Sundin was a clamp. The starter battery is installed next with the fuse box clipped technical sounding board; Dave Dwoskin insisted I become a Con- into place, the positive terminal battery clamp is reattached, and the cours judge so I could learn about my car. Stu Olesker, Willy Hugron, negative terminal battery clamp is reattached. If, upon attaching the cables to the batteries, you have lights and no smoke (or Sammie Sanders, Terry Sullivan, Brad Klein, Pierre Lemieux, Rick explosions), you have been successful, but you are not done. There Carron, Tom Holland, John Ellison, Jay Barry Colin, Marie Morris- is still the matter of resetting the electromechanical devices. Things roe, Bill Cronkhite, Bob Ratinoff, Brian Quadt, Tom Mercurio, Diane that have been programmed into the computers, like radio stations and Gary Cerveny, Peggi and Perry Hirsch, Bob and Kathleen Wulf, and display preferences, will still be set as they were. However, Tony Handler…I feel like an Oscar winner on stage knowing that I electromechanical devices, such as those found in the seats and am forgetting someone. You are thanked in spirit if not named here! windows, will generally require resetting. The windows will not be automatic anymore and will have to be initialized. Simply roll up each window and then, after the window is all the way up, press At this year’s Concours I talked to a new member, Frank, who the “up” button a few more times, a second each time, to teach the had inherited a Rolls-Royce and Bentley. “I sent away someplace car where “closed” is. Similarly, the sun roof must be initialized. and got all this material about the car – a build report” he says in This is done by pressing the rotary switch to activate the emergency wonder. “And everyone in the club is so friendly and helpful”. I simply closing function. It must be pressed twice, once to activate the first smile. He’s discovered the secret – that the best cars in the world phase of initialization, waiting for motors to complete their operation, are driven by some of the nicest people around. then again until the second phase completes (it will take about four seconds for the second phase to start, at which point the roof will open and close, initializing the mechanism). The seat memory may Thank you everyone! need to be reset, but not always. Love and hugs, The last thing that must be reset is the steering angle. The ABS logic needs to know where the wheels are pointed, and how fast and in what direction the steering wheel is being turned to determine Sherry and her Cloud what braking forces should be applied to which wheels when the brakes are applied. There is a position encoder for the steering wheel but since it’s an electromechanical device it has to be reset. This is done by hooking up a scanner to the car, starting the engine, and turning the steering wheel to the left about 90 degrees, then back to “straight ahead” steering. The value of the steering angle can be read out real-time on the scanner display. Once the steering wheel is pointing the wheels straight ahead, the operator (you) tells the scanner to send a command to the ABS controller to reset the steering angle. Ross-Tech has a procedure on their web site for doing this, as well as a video showing how to do it with their scanner. All in all, changing the battery in a newer car is not quite as simple as it used to be. The complexity of newer cars and the limited space in the Bentley in particular, make even a simple task like changing the battery more of an adventure than maybe one would like. But it can be done, if care is taken. As always, my thanks to Ronny Shaver for his encouragement Sherry Stern and her Cloud and the use of his garage.

8 MAY 2014 RROC-SOCAL.COM MAY 2014 9 The Spirit of Ecstasy Celebrating 50 Years March Technical Seminar By Steve Power-Fardy Technical Chairman Ronny Shaver conducted a technical seminar at Ronny’s Garage in Santa Ana on March 8th and a number of very involved members attended. Half of the seminar was devoted to the Silver Spur and the other half was on the Silver Cloud steering column. As you can see from the photos, the attendees were really getting into discussions and it had a very involved seminar feel to it. (Note the photo of Clint Camomot and Brock Backlund getting into a discussion with Ronny smiling in the background.) We can’t extend enough thanks to Ronny for his ongoing commitment to increasing the technical expertise of the So Cal region members. He conducts a technical seminar on the first Saturday of Clint Camomot and Brock Backlund each month on various topics of interest to the membership. Please send your questions to Ronny at [email protected].
