European cars above 9 h.p. No 77 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith, of Mrs. N. Cook won the Aga Khan Cup. Mrs. Cook and Mrs. Osborne also won "Grand Prix d'honneur for élégance". Cannes 1951. 1950 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith, #WHD82, Saloon by James Young (Design No. WR25, Body-No. 1761). Exhibited at 1950 Earls Court Motor Show (the major motor show in the UK) on James Young’s stand this car was acquired by F.S. Cook who previously had acquired the 1949 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith, #WDC18, that had been bodied by James Young, too. Coachbuilder’s photos from 1950 of this car (though not identified by chassis number) appear in "Rolls-Royce, The Classic Elegance" by Lawrence Dalton, 2nd edition (edited by Bernard King), Dalton Watson Fine Books Ltd., Deerfield, Illinois, USA 2005. Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith, Baujahr 1950, #WHD82, Limousine von James Young (Design Nr. WR25, Aufbau Nr. 1761). Dies ist das Automobil, welches auf dem Stand von James Young bei der Earls Court Motor Show in London (seinerzeit die wichtigste Automobil-Ausstellung im Vereinigten Königreich) gezeigt worden ist. Es wurde erworben von F.S. Cook, der bereits einen Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith besass; Baujahr 1949, #WDC18, ebenfalls von James Young karossiert. Later variants of the standard body (there was the option to order but chassis cum engine and arrange for bespoke coachwork to individual design and specifications by a coachbuilder) the air-inlet on top of the scuttle was eliminated in favour of two air-inlets positioned in the A-post in front of the front doors. The lines of Design No. 8098 of Hooper’s chief designer Osmond Rivers met with much acclaim and several Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith received such coachwork. Nonetheless any customer had the choice from a multitude of options, of course, to order the bespoke coachwork to be executed exactly to personal specifications. Many consider this model with its well-balanced proportions a true all-time great. Nice 1956 1956 Bentley S1, registered VD42299 – CH –, Standard Steel Sports Saloon The Bentley S-Series was introduced in 1955. Bentley S1 motor cars produced from 1955 to 1959 were propelled by a 6- cylinder in-line engine. From 1959 to 1962 the Bentley S2 was made with a V8-engine shoehorned into the engine bay. As regards outward appearance these cars were indistinguishable – however conclusion from the 1956 date of the photo that appears in the book, is that indeed this car can only be a Bentley S1. Bentley S1, Baujahr 1956, Kennzeichen VD42299 – CH –, Standard Steel Sports Saloon Die Bentley S-Serie wurde 1955 vorgestellt. Von 1955 bis 1959 wurde der Bentley S1 gebaut, dem ein 6-ZylindeRolls- Royceeihenmotor Vortrieb gab. Ab 1959 gab es den Bentley S2, bei dem ein V8-Motor unter der Haube zu finden war. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on a visit to the Principality of Monaco has manual gearchange and is one of the earliest cars (the model started with SBA chassis-series, the Affix ‘L’ denotes left- hand drive). This is the "Small Boot" version, i.e. the first Standard Steel body with rather limited luggage space. Additional luggage could be carried when the boot-lid was lowered and fixed in horizontal position (from 1952 the "Big Boot" variant with re-designed tail offered more space and is easily identified by its differently shaped bootlid). Note: This is no long-wheelbase variant, in so far an error crept into the caption in the book; Rolls-Royce never made any Silver Dawn with long wheelbase. Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn, Baujahr 1950, #LSBA6, Standard Steel Sports Saloon Der anlässlich eines Besuches im Fürstentum Monaco S.K.H. Prinzgemahl Philip, Herzog von Edinburgh, zur Verfügung gestellte Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn verfügt über manuelle Schaltung und ist einer der frühesten ROLLS-ROYCE Silver Dawn überhaupt (die Modellserie begann mit SBA, das hier vorangestellte 'L' bedeutet Linkslenker). Dies ist die Ausführung mit "small boot", d.h. mit geringem Kofferraumvolumen und in waagerechter Stellung arretierbarem Kofferraumdeckel als Basis für Aufschnallkoffer (ab 1952 gab es mehr Kofferraumvolumen mit neu gestaltetem Heck und gewölbtem Deckel).     JanuaryJuly 2017 2017 NEWS Thoughts from the showroom... Hello and welcome to Frank Dale & Stepsons Summer newsletter. I can safely say I’ve never driven so many cars with the hood down than I have this year – as London has had its fair share of issues to deal with over the past few months, the weather at least has been very kind! Since I last put pen to paper the Brexit process has officially begun with the whole world looking on with great interest. And since our last newsletter Teresa May’s dream of an increased majority in the House of Commons turned into a nightmare as the election results unfolded. As the political vultures from all parties surround her lame duck premiership who knows when we will see a calmer Westminster, but at least the negotiations for Brexit are now underway, a process we will all be keen to follow. Returning to the far more pleasant world of classic cars, Frank Dale & Stepsons have been very busy over the past few months. In April we exhibited five cars at our traditional season opener at The Essen Techno Classica in Germany which is always a tiring but fun week to take part in. We also saw some familiar faces and cars we have handled in the past gracing the lawns that border the beautiful Lake Como at the Villa D’Este concours. We are currently preparing a car for entry to the concours next year so will hopefully get to enjoy the Essen Techno Classica full event in person in 2018.

This sale will include 22 cars from various ages of motoring, and will have examples from Ferrari, Bentley, Bugatti, Rolls-Royce and Jaguar, among others. Highlighting the sale are examples from four different eras of motoring: 1897 Panhard-Levassor 6hp Twin Cylinder Phaeton The Panhard-Levassor was the first ever luxury car, and the company dominated the luxury market until the arrival of Mercedes in 1901. In 1895, a Panhard-Levassor won the first ever motor race by driving from Paris to Bordeaux and back again. Unfortunately, few examples have survived – the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain records just 35. As a result, it is a rare occurrence to see such an example of motoring history at auction. This example, which is known as ‘William the Conqueror’, was delivered to a motor dealership in Paris in December 1897. It was discovered in the late 1970s in northern France, and was brought to the UK where it underwent a comprehensive restoration. The car carries an estimate of £100,000-150,000. 1923 Bentley 3 Litre Drophead Coupé by Park Ward This immaculate vintage Bentley was delivered new to Alfred Dunhill in December 1923. Dunhill is most famous for founding the company which carries his name, and which aimed to supply ‘everything but the motor’ in its motor accessories range.

Illustrated here are some of the Welcome to Frank Dale & Stepsons cars we have sold since our last Spring newsletter newsletter The first three months of the year have been extremely busy so I thought it was time to take stock, take a breath and bring you up to date with everything that has been happening at Frank Dale & 1935 Bentley 3 ½ Litre Stepsons during this time. Open Tourer by Corsica 1936 Bentley 4 ¼ Litre Saloon by Hooper Emma and I have travelled extensively since the start of the year, visiting four continents and racking up a few thousand air miles between us. We may have been one of British Airways best customers so far in 2018 and we could probably recite the BA safety video with relative ease at the moment. As much as I enjoy travelling it’s great to be home again with my feet planted firmly back in the UK for the next few months. This coincides with the end of British winter time as well (fingers crossed). I’m sure, like us, if you live in Northern Europe you have seen enough snow, 1947 Bentley Mk VI Countryman ice and salty roads over the past few months to last a lifetime. I for by Harold Radford one, can’t wait to get back behind the wheel of some beautiful classic cars again. Summer can’t come soon enough. The sales department has seen a steady and solid start to 2018, with a number of deals agreed during the first three months of the year.
