The Sydney Intellectual/ Religious Scene, 1916–2016
The Sydney intellectual/ religious scene, 1916–2016 James Franklin Strictly speaking, there is no intellectual/religious “scene” in Sydney, in the sense that there is, say, a folk music scene. A “scene” has groups which know one another and an audience that cycles through them. But with religion it is much more a matter of individual denominational silos with little interaction in the sphere of ideas and debate. There is no regular gathering in theology or religion that fulfils the role in the philosophy world of the annual Australasian Philosophy Conference. The century-old, interdenominational Heretics Club at Sydney University,1 which this journal issue celebrates, is a rare exception. But a dozen people meeting almost under cover of darkness do not constitute a “scene”. Nor has Sydney had any high-profile religious figure in its public life comparable to Archbishop Mannix in Melbourne. Hilary Carey wrote in the Dictionary of Sydney, “Religion has not been a notably creative force in Sydney’s cultural life and the city is conspicuously lacking in prophets or founders of new religions.”2 That has contributed to a poor penetration of local intellectual life by religious views. Furthermore, Sydney, unlike Melbourne, has a reputation of being anti- intellectual in religion, with Catholic life being shaped by the long reigns of the unintellectual Archbishops Kelly and Gilroy,3 Sydney evangelicals suspecting the fallenness of human reason, and Presbyterians hunting heretics. Archbishop Kelly was more concerned with the evils of mixed bathing, his Anglican counterpart Archbishop Wright with the opening of the Royal Easter Show on Good Friday. -

It is true, also, to say that the history of the Church of Christ is the biography of the Christian heroes and heroines who have adorned the Church by their lives and advanced its work by their sacrifices. Progress everywhere depends on personality; and the great man is God's best gift to his generation and to the Church of Christ. Nowhere has this been more true than in the Scottish Church, and nowhere is there to be found a nobler roll of great men. It is with this conviction that the Author has written the present work. Further, he feels that there is no more illuminating study than the story of the Scottish Church ; and if that story is to be fully appreciated, there is no more profitable method of studying it than through the lives of the men and women who have done so much to make the Church in Scotland what it is to-day. -

Dr Ian Ellis-Jones BA, LLB (Syd), LLM, PhD (UTS), Dip Relig Stud (LCIS) Senior Minister, Sydney Unitarian Church, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Senior Pastor, Unitarian Ministries, Columbia, South Carolina, United States of America An Expanded Version of an Address Delivered on 24 March 2010 at St Andrew’s College within the University of Sydney It gives me great pleasure to be present in this esteemed College tonight, and to deliver this address which is entitled "The Relevance of Dr Samuel Angus for the Christian Church in the Twenty-First Century". I feel quite a strong connection to this College. Although I was never a resident student here, I nevertheless feel a strong connection to this College. First, Dr Samuel Angus, although a Presbyterian, was essentially a Christian Unitarian in his theology. Secondly, he lived for many years at Turramurra, just a couple of streets from where my family and I have lived for over 2 decades. (His house remains to this day, more-or-less as it was when Angus and his wife lived there more than 70 years ago.) Thirdly, Rabbi Rudolph Brasch, who was the senior minister of Temple Emanuel at Woollahra for some 30 years, and whose seminal book The Star of David (Angus & Robertson, 1955) was the first book to be published in Australia on Judaism, was not only a guest professor at this College teaching future Presbyterian ministers Biblical Hebrew but also an acting minister of the Sydney Unitarian Church for a time. -

THE SECOND DISRUPTION: THE ORIGINS OF THE FREE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF 1893 JAMES LACHLAN MACliDD, HARLAXTON COLLEGE, GRANTHAM Introduction In May 1893, Scotland experienced a Second Disruption when two ministers, Donald Macfarlane of Raasay and Donald Macdonald of Shieldaig, left the Free Church of Scotland. They were followed by a hand-full of students who had been intending to enter the Free Church ministry, as well as a considerable number of Free Church members and adherents. Within a short period of time the new Church which they founded had come to be known as the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland. 1 Another Scottish denomination had been born. There were many reasons why the Free Church, itself the product of the Disruption of 1843,2 split again in 1893; why a Church which was once 'so happily united that you have no right hand and no left in that place'3 became one of the most bitterly-divided denominations in the Protestant world. Within the confines of this paper, though, these reasons will be divided into four basic areas. Through his father, William Gray Brooks, he was descended from the Rev. John Cotton; through his mother, Mary Ann Phillips, a very devout woman, he was a great-grandson of Samuel Phillips, Jr., the founder of Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts. Four of the couple's six sons -- Phillips, Frederic, Arthur and John Cotton -- were ordained in the Episcopal Church. Phillips Brooks prepared for college at the Boston Latin School and graduated from Harvard University in 1855 at the age of 20, where he was elected to the A.D. Club. After a brief period as a teacher at Boston Latin , he began in 1856 to study for ordination in the Episcopal Church in the Virginia Theological Seminary at Alexandria, Virginia. -

MDCCCXCV. PREFATORY NOTICE. We think it may be well to state here the reasons why the genealogical outlines •of the families of Douglas of Mulderg and Robertson of Kindeace have been printed. They are the work of a descendant of the Douglas family, who lives amongst us, and has been known during the last thirty or forty years as a genea- logist of gx-eat ability and possessing very wide information. This gentleman has frequently of late years been asked for information regarding these two families, therefore he has kindly complied with the request of some of those interested in the Douglas and Robertson families that his genealogical knowledge of them should be printed. The advantage of printing will be seen when it is understood that a large portion of the matter this book contains has not hitherto been pub- lished, and might easily be lost and forgotten, as many of the descendants of these families have not been proprietors of land and their representatives have gone to all quarters of the globe in order to make their fortunes. The habit of wandering far afield has rendered the collection of full particulars in some cases extremely difficult, and in others impossible ; so, when there are errors in this book, they may, we hope, be pardoned, as great care has been taken in trying to avoid mistakes. It is with considerable regret that the system of giving authorities for every sentence and word has been abandoned ; but, if this plan is properly carried out, it increases the bulk of a book to a tremendous extent, and, owing to the long quotations necessary, renders a genealogy rather broken ; also, if the system of giving authorities is not scrupulously adhered to, it leaves as much room for romance and false statements as there would be if no authorities were given. -

D thesis University of Stirling 2003 ABSTRACT The nineteenth century saw the revival and widespread propagation in Scotland of a view of Scottish history that put Presbyterianism at the heart of the nation's identity, and told the story of Scotland's history largely in terms of the church's struggle for religious and constitutional liberty. Key to. this development was the Anti-Burgher minister Thomas M'Crie, who, spurred by attacks on Presbyterianism found in eighteenth-century and contemporary historical literature, between the years 1811 and 1819 wrote biographies of John Knox and Andrew Melville and a vindication of the Covenanters. M'Crie generally followed the very hard line found in the Whig- Presbyterian polemical literature that emerged from the struggles of the sixteenth and seventeenth century; he was particularly emphatic in support of the independence of the church from the state within its own sphere. His defence of his subjects embodied a Scottish Whig interpretation of British history, in which British constitutional liberties were prefigured in Scotland and in a considerable part won for the British people by the struggles of Presbyterian Scots during the seventeenth century. M'Crie's work won a huge following among the Scottish reading public, and spawned a revival in Presbyterian historiography which lasted through the century. His influence was considerably enhanced through the affinity felt for his work by the Anti- Intrusionists in the Church of Scotland and their successorsin the Free Church (1843- 1900), who were particularly attracted by his uncompromising defence of the spiritual independence of the church. -

125 ROBERT RAINY. WHEN in 1862, at the age of six-and-thirty, Robert Rainy was appointed Professor of Church History in the New College, Edinburgh, in succession to Principal Cunning ham, it appeared as if he had been destined by Providence to the life of a scholar. And for such a vocation he had manifest qualifications. He had the brooding mind. On whatever subject he spoke, he created the impression of having pondered it long and deeply. On most subjects the majority of readers or hearers were soon made aware that, however far they had penetrated, he had been as far, and probably farther. Not only did he attack a subject from every side, but he seemed to get his hand right underneath it. His own psychological processes were so subtle and comprehensive that he naturally worked with the psychological method; and, Church History being his subject, there was plenty of scope for its application. He never contemplated history as a mere pageant, as Dean Stanley did; still less ~id he take heretics and knock their heads together, as his predecessor, Dr. Cunningham, had done. In dealing with departures from orthodoxy, he took you to the point where the divergence had commenced, and showed how, in the heretic's circumstances, it was not unnatural that he should mistake the path, and that, indeed, if you had been at the same pass, you might have done the same. He seemed to feel his way through the systems of the great thinkers from the inside, instead of exhibit ing them as objects to be contemplated from the outside.
