MONTANA NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM Animal Species of Concern Species List Last Updated 08/05/2010 219 Species of Concern 86 Potential Species of Concern All Records (no filtering) A program of the University of Montana and Natural Resource Information Systems, Montana State Library Introduction The Montana Natural Heritage Program (MTNHP) serves as the state's information source for animals, plants, and plant communities with a focus on species and communities that are rare, threatened, and/or have declining trends and as a result are at risk or potentially at risk of extirpation in Montana. This report on Montana Animal Species of Concern is produced jointly by the Montana Natural Heritage Program (MTNHP) and Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (MFWP). Montana Animal Species of Concern are native Montana animals that are considered to be "at risk" due to declining population trends, threats to their habitats, and/or restricted distribution. Also included in this report are Potential Animal Species of Concern -- animals for which current, often limited, information suggests potential vulnerability or for which additional data are needed before an accurate status assessment can be made. Over the last 200 years, 5 species with historic breeding ranges in Montana have been extirpated from the state; Woodland Caribou (Rangifer tarandus), Greater Prairie-Chicken (Tympanuchus cupido), Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius), Pilose Crayfish (Pacifastacus gambelii), and Rocky Mountain Locust (Melanoplus spretus). Designation as a Montana Animal Species of Concern or Potential Animal Species of Concern is not a statutory or regulatory classification. Instead, these designations provide a basis for resource managers and decision-makers to make proactive decisions regarding species conservation and data collection priorities in order to avoid additional extirpations. -

INTRODUCTION Annandale (1911) in his volume in the Fauna of British India series on Freshwater Sponges, Hydroids and Polyzoa described 35 species, subspecies and varieties under seven genera of Spongillidae from what Was then the British India and from yeylon (now Sri Lanka) and Burma. He also recog nised three subgenera under the genus Spongilla. Later on (up to 1919) he described a few more species. After Annandale very little work has been done on Indian Spongillidae. Penney and Racek (1968), while making a revision of the freshwater sponges of the world, synonymised many Indian species, subspecies and varieties reported/described by Annandale. This checklist is based on the present status of the different taxa. This tentative list has been prepared to consolidate our knowledge of the freshwater sponges within Indian political boundaries and also with the idea that this may serve as a prelude to a revised volume in the Fauna of India series. It may, however, be stated that many areas of the country have yet to be surveyed for their spongillid fauna. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract We report here the first record of a living Potamolepidae (Cherokeesia n. gen.) from the Nearctic Region and from the northern hemisphere. The new species Cherokeesia armata from southern Appalachians diverges at generic and specific level from all the other known taxa of the family Potamolepidae in its unique combination of diagnostic traits: gemmular theca armed by gemmuloscleres ranging from small strongyle-like spicules to stout, large oxeas; absence of pneumatic layer; spiny oxeas as main skeleton megascleres; irregular, slender pauci- to uni-spicular skeletal network. The most sim- ilar species belong to the genera Potamophloios and Oncosclera. The circumtropical biogeographic pattern of extant Pota- molepidae, previously considered of Gondwanian to Gondwanian-like origin, is enlarged to the Nearctic. The present Tennessee discovery confirms a wider range of the family. -

Evidence of Freshwater Sponges (Porifera: Spongillidae) in the Upper Volga River (Russia)

These species have three different zoogeographical distributions, namely, cosmopolitan, holarctic and holarctic-amphiatlantic. In the paper illustrations for determination of sponge spicule are given and the possibility to use the biogenic opal from the spicules for paleotemperature reconstructions is discussed. 1. Introduction: Considering evolution, sponges (Parazoa) are the most primal group of the Metazoa, therefore sponges were used as model organisms for several approaches in developmental biology (WEISSENFELS 1989, VOS et al. 1991). Most of the freshwater sponges of the world belong to the family Spongillidae (Porifera, Demospongia) (ADDIS & PETERSON 2005). They appear in stagnant as well as in running water bodies, usually in waters with little or no particulate matter, which would affect on the pores and close channels. Sponges are active filter feeders on plankton, bacteria and dissolved organic matter, due to this they play a specific role for water-purification. The filter capacity of Spongilla lacustris amounts about 6ml h-1 mg-1 dry mass (FROST 1980), thus a finger sized sponge can filter over 125 liters of water within 24 h (FROST 1991). This fauna consists of species of both marine and freshwater origin. Some Caspian invertebrates cannot be confidently referred to as animals of either origin. The endemic monophyletic family of sponges, Metschnikowiidae, is among them. Although these sponges are considered as fresh water in the modern literature, no researcher has seen them alive for many years, and its status is actually unconfirmed.
