Manuscript received on June 15, 2010; accepted for publication on October 26, 2010 ABSTRACT The Cemitério Paleolake, Catalão, Goiás, is a lacustrine deposit that is rich in spicules of continental sponges. These spicules, which are present in three sections (1-3), were analyzed for the taxonomic identification of the species in order to reconstruct the late Quaternary palaeoenvironment. An indigenous assemblage of lentic sponges was found, consisting of Metania spinata (Carter 1881), Dosilia pydanieli Volkmer-Ribeiro (1992), Radiospongilla amazonensis Volkmer-Ribeiro and Maciel (1983), Trochospongilla variabilis Bonetto and Ezcurra de Drago (1973), Corvomeyenia thumi (Traxler 1895), Heterorotula fistula Volkmer- Ribeiro and Motta (1995), plus Corvoheteromeyenia australis (Bonetto and Ezcurra de Drago 1966), which here has its first record in an assemblage formed by biosiliceous deposits. Furthermore, at the base of the sections, spicules of sponges from lotic environments were detected, including Corvospongilla seckti Bonetto and Ezcurra de Drago (1966), Oncosclera navicella (Carter 1881) and Eunapius fragilis (Leidy 1851), which suggests a contribution from flowing water. We identified 25 spongofacies horizons caused by sponge assemblages typical of a lentic environment, dated from at least 39,700 years BP., and currently occurring in lakes typical of the Cerrado Biome. The new species Cherokeesia armata from southern Appalachians diverges at generic and specific level from all the other known taxa of the family Potamolepidae in its unique combination of diagnostic traits: gemmular theca armed by gemmuloscleres ranging from small strongyle-like spicules to stout, large oxeas; absence of pneumatic layer; spiny oxeas as main skeleton megascleres; irregular, slender pauci- to uni-spicular skeletal network. The most sim- ilar species belong to the genera Potamophloios and Oncosclera. The circumtropical biogeographic pattern of extant Pota- molepidae, previously considered of Gondwanian to Gondwanian-like origin, is enlarged to the Nearctic. The present Tennessee discovery confirms a wider range of the family.

Verein Innsbruck Band 93 S. 73 - 84 Innsbruck, Dez. 2006 Evidence of Freshwater Sponges (Porifera: Spongillidae) in the Upper Volga River (Russia) by Martin SCHLETTERER*1) & Thomas Ols EGGERS*2) Synopsis: Microscopical observations of diatom mounts, processed from material of the Upper Volga Expedition 2005, revealed the presence of sponge spicules that corresponded to Spongilla lacustris (LINNAEUS 1758), Ephydatia mülleri (LIEBERKÜHN 1855), Trochospongilla horri- da WELTNER 1893, and likely Heteromeyenia baileyi (BOWERBANK 1863). These species have three different zoogeographical distributions, namely, cosmopolitan, holarctic and holarctic-amphiatlantic. In the paper illustrations for determination of sponge spicule are given and the possibility to use the biogenic opal from the spicules for paleotemperature reconstructions is discussed. 1. Introduction: Considering evolution, sponges (Parazoa) are the most primal group of the Metazoa, therefore sponges were used as model organisms for several approaches in developmental biology (WEISSENFELS 1989, VOS et al. 1991). Most of the freshwater sponges of the world belong to the family Spongillidae (Porifera, Demospongia) (ADDIS & PETERSON 2005). They appear in stagnant as well as in running water bodies, usually in waters with little or no particulate matter, which would affect on the pores and close channels. Sponges are active filter feeders on plankton, bacteria and dissolved organic matter, due to this they play a specific role for water-purification. The filter capacity of Spongilla lacustris amounts about 6ml h-1 mg-1 dry mass (FROST 1980), thus a finger sized sponge can filter over 125 liters of water within 24 h (FROST 1991). The present study also presents a redescription of H. insignis on the basis of the specimen reported upon by Volkmer (1963), collected from the Atlântico Sul Hydrographic Basin. Spicule measurements (n=30) were made for comparison with other Heteromeyenia species. This is the first time that H. insignis has its complete set of spicules studied under SEM. After comparison with the redescription of the type of H. baileyi, we also find characteristics that justify the maintenance of H. insignis as a valid species. Sponges are one of the most ancient animal phyla with about 8850 living species and about 5000 described fossil taxa. Most sponges are marine and live at all depths of all oceans. Freshwater bodies (lakes, rivers) are inhabited only by a small minority of species, ca. 240 (< 3%) comprising the order Spongillida (Demospongiae) most of which are able to produce specialized resting bodies to survive harsh terrestrial environmental conditions. This highly disproportionate ratio of marine and freshwater sponges is even more accentuated in the field of palaeontology with rare records reported up to the Miocene (< 0.4% of all known fossil sponges). Only a few fossil taxa were correctly supported by strong and convincing taxonomic morphotraits at genus and species level, thus we provide here an overview of fossil freshwater sponges focusing on their morphotraits and distribution in time and space. Each recorded taxon is described in detail following the modern taxonomy and nomenclature. All fossil data suggest a clear trend of long term conservative mor- phology in the evolutionary history of Spongillida, although some traits of Recent gemmules evolved in a wide array of adaptive morpho-functional novelties. The majority of accepted fossil species belongs to the cosmopolitan family Spongillidae. The genera Oncosclera and Potamophloios of the family Potamolepidae seem to have had, in the past, a much larger geographic range than today.

In the Biilletin series, the first of which was issued in 1875, appear longer, separate publications consisting of monographs (occasionally in several parts) and volumes in which are collected works on related subjects. Bulletins are either octavo or quarto in size, depending on the needs of the presentation. Since 1902, papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum have been published in the Bulletin series under the heading Contributions from the United States National Herbarium.
