SECULAR AMERICAN VS JEWISH Since World War II the idiom of the vast majority of American Jews is secularism. In return for being part of the big three (Protestant, Catholic and Jew), we have invested time and intellectual effort in harmonizing Judaism and Americanism. Over the last half century, whenever a new idea has come into vogue in the liberal American world, the non-Orthodox have found a way to make it a part of Judaism. We speak the language of American secularism. We speak of rights and autonomy and personal choice. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that those who want to retain the traditional, Jewish prohibitions against homosexual act should be under attack. The very motto of Conservative Judaism, “Tradition and Change” has always assumed that the burden of proof is on those who want to change tradition. But now, Dennis Prager’s pithy statement that the religion of American Jews is not Judaism, but liberalism is proving true. The debate over Homosexuality is a debate over a clash of values: Judaism or Americanism. Sometimes we have to say, “No”. It is entirely proper that within American society there can be a debate over whether American law has anything to say about the private choices that people make. -

SYNAGOGUE SKILLS: HANDS ON AND BEYOND THE SYNAGOGUE AND PRAYER SERVICE Torah lays out religion based on one Temple located in Jerusalem and a system of daily, weekly, monthly communal sacrifices as well as personal offerings. Even in the earliest times, there was tension between a religion that could only be practiced in one place and Jews living far away. Some tried to build lesser temples but by the time of King Josiah of Judah in the seventh century BCE, the exclusivity of the Temple is firmly established. A new institution began to arise. There were places where it was clearly understood that no sacrifices could or would be offered. No one knows for certain when the synagogue and its alternate form of practice began. One plausible suggestion ties it to the Babylonian exile when the Temple had been destroyed. We have archeological and literary evidence for synagogues as early as the third century BCE in the diaspora and the first century BCE in Israel. The earliest descriptions of synagogues suggest that they were places of study and where knowledge of the Torah was disseminated. An inscription on the floor of a first-century synagogue in Jerusalem describes itself as a place “for reading the law and studying the commandments, and as a hostel with chambers and water installations to provide for the needs of travelers from abroad.” According to Reuven Hammer, “Even at the beginning, the synagogue was a revolutionary institution.” It: Provided for communal worship divorced from sacrifice Could be anywhere; did not have to be in a special or sacred spot. -

It demonstrates that Midrash ha-Ne’lam, more often thought of as a mystical midrash, incorporates both rhetorical components from the Babylonian Talmud and practices of cognitive creativity from the medieval discipline of talmudic study into its esoteric midrash. By mapping these intersections of Midrash, Talmud, and Esotericism, this dissertation introduces a new framework for studying rabbinic interdisciplinarity—the ways that different rabbinic disciplines impact and transform each other. The first half of this dissertation examines medieval and modern attempts to connect or disconnect the disciplines of talmudic study and Jewish esotericism. Spanning from Maimonides’ reliance on Islamic models of Aristotelian dialectic to conjoin Pardes (Jewish esotericism) and talmudic logic, to Gershom Scholem’s juvenile fascination with the Babylonian Talmud, to contemporary endeavours to remedy the disciplinary schisms generated by Scholem’s founding models of Kabbalah (as a form of Judaism that is in tension with “rabbinic Judaism”), these two chapters tell a series of overlapping histories of Jewish inter/disciplinary projects. -

Opening the Torah to Women: The Transformation of Tradition Women are a people by themselves -Talmud: Shabbat 62a Traditional Judaism believes that both men and women have differentiated and distinct roles delegated through the Torah. A man’s role is focused on positive time-bound mitzvot (commandments), which include but are not limited to, daily praying, wrapping tefillin and putting on a tallit; whereas a women’s role and mitzvot are not time bound and include lighting Shabbat candles, separating a piece of challah for G-d on Shabbat, and the laws of Niddah (menstruation purity). 1 Orthodox Judaism views the separate roles of men and women as a valued and crucial aspect of Jewish life and law, whereas Jewish feminism and more reform branches of Judaism believe these distinctions between men and women are representative of sexual discrimination and unequal opportunity in Judaism. The creation of the Reform and Conservative movement in the late 1800s paved the way for the rise of the Jewish feminist movement in the 1970s, which re-evaluated the classical Jewish texts and halakha (Jewish law) in relation to the role of women in Judaism. Due to Judaism’s ability to evolve and change throughout time, women associated with different Jewish denominations have been able to create their own place within Judaism while also maintaining the traditional aspects of Judaism in order to find a place which connects them most to their religiosity and femininity as modern Jewish women. In Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), there is a teaching that states that when each soul is created it contains both a female and male soul.
