The time has now come for sixteen of the best young women’s teams in the world to compete for the world title. This level is where new stars emerge and heroes are made. With a chance to be crowned Junior world champions, competition will be fierce and the games action packed. Spectators and athletes will therefore find this a hugely entertaining event. For many of the athletes, this will be the first time they have represented their nation on such a big stage. I’m sure they will be honoured to pull on their nation’s shirt as they showcase their talent to the world. This event will be hugely important in terms of their development as athletes but also personally. It will be a fantastic opportunity to learn from the many different cultures competing here and make life-long friendships which are integral to the spirit of the hockey family. It is the second time that the city of Santiago has played host to the women’s Junior World Cup, having also done so in 2005. It promises to be a very special occasion, and as such, I’m sure local sports fans will turn out to cheer on all of the teams taking part. I would like to thank the hosts and all of their partners for the tremendous effort that has gone in to holding this event. Our thanks must also go to the sponsors and all of the volunteers who are crucial to making this event a success. I wish all of the athletes and officials the best of luck and hope that in addition to the hockey you all get to enjoy the rich culture and warm hospitality offered by this wonderful country. Yours in hockey. Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra FIH President #RockTheJuniors #HJWC2016 4 CNT About Santiago From the Lonely Planet website: Surprising, cosmopolitan, energetic, sophisticated and worldly, Santiago is a city of syncopated cultural currents, madhouse parties, expansive museums and top-flight restaurants. No wonder 40 percent of Chileans call the leafy capital city home. It’s a wonderful place for strolling, and each neighbourhood has its unique flavour and tone. Head out for the day to take in the museums, grand architecture and pedestrian malls of the Centro, before an afternoon picnic in one of the gorgeous hillside parks that punctuate the city’s landscape. Nightlife takes flight in the sidewalk eateries, cafes and beer halls of Barrios Brasil, Lastarria and Bellavista, while as you head east to well-heeled neighborhoods like Providencia and Las Condes, you’ll find tony restaurants and world-class hotels. With a growing economy, renovated arts scene and plenty of eccentricity to spare, Santiago is an old-guard city on the cusp of a modern-day renaissance. Each team plays every other team in its pool. The pools were formulated based on the rankings of the senior teams ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, being adjusted to ensure that teams from the same continent were in different pools (where possible), as approved by the FIH Competitions Committee. The top two teams from each pool will progress to the quarter-finals, with the remaining eight teams playing for classification. The quarter-finals will be as follows, although the matches will not necessarily be played in this order: 1st Pool A v 2nd Pool B – Match 1 1st Pool D v 2nd Pool C – Match 2 1st Pool B v 2nd Pool A – Match 3 1st Pool C v 2nd Pool D – Match 4 The winners of these matches will qualify for the semi-finals and play for 1st to 4th places. The losing teams will play for 5th to 8th places. The semi-finals will be as follows, although the matches will not necessarily be played in this order: Winner Match 1 v Winner Match 2 Winner Match 3 v Winner Match 4 The winners of these matches will play for 1st and 2nd places (the final) and the losers will play for 3rd and 4th places. The score at the end of the regulation time of these matches will be registered by the FIH as the result of the match. If at the end of the regulation time the result is a draw, in order to establish an outright winner of a classification match for the purpose of the competition, a shoot-out competition will be played to establish the winner of the match. Sport and recreation sector commit to tackling inequality The appalling death of George Floyd, the global protests that have followed and the powerful message of the Black Lives Matter movement has made every section of society take notice and confront an ugly truth. Sport and recreation has an influential role to bring about meaningful change and this period has rightly led the sector to reflect, listen, question, learn and openly discuss how to take positive action. It is acknowledged that up to this point, we have not done enough. It is time to confront racism and inequality that exists across sport, from grassroots participation through to the boardroom. Research by the Sport and Recreation Alliance (2018) showed that four in ten (40%) of BAME participants have endured a negative experience in sport or physical activity settings, more than double that of white participants. A 2020 Sport England report demonstrates that just over 50% of black people in England meet the recommended levels of physical activity each week. The Diversity in Sport Governance report (2018/19) identified there is only 5% BAME board representation across Sport England and UK Sport funded organisations. Constructive work has already been started to address a number of these problems including a committed effort to increase boardroom diversity, additional funding to tackle inequality and an array of inspiring inclusiveness projects from across the sport and recreation sector. This can only be seen as the start. Systemic change must be made at all levels so that we can become truly reflective of our wonderfully diverse society. We can no longer rely on black role models at the elite level speaking out, we must join together to become better and to support every member of the sport and recreation community.

National Governing Bodies of Sport Survey Competitive School Sport Summary Report June 2014 Prepared by the TOP Foundation for Ofsted SportPark, Loughborough University, 3 Oakwood Drive, Loughborough, LE11 3QF NGB Competitive School Sport Investigation Summary Report Executive Summary In the spring of 2014 an investigation commissioned by Ofsted explored the school backgrounds, ethnicity and socioeconomic status of some of our best adult and age group international sport teams. The same investigation asked 29 National Governing Bodies of sport (NGBs) to report on their competitive school sport provision in 39 different sports; 26 (90%) NGBs agreed to take part and they reported on 35 sports. This NGBs report is part of a wider investigation being undertaken by Ofsted into competitive school sport for Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education, Children’s Services and Skills (HMCI), Sir Michael Wilshaw, which includes a supporting report with input from headteachers. This investigation collated 6 different sets of data on the known school backgrounds of: i. Current international representatives from 14 sports (n=224) ii. London 2012 Olympic Team (n=279) iii. London 2012 Paralympic Team (n=106) iv. Players competing in national leagues in 5 sports (n=543) v. UK Sport’s Athlete Insights Survey: Olympic sports (n=606) vi. • Sport-And-Physical-A
Monday 21st September 2020 Dear Prime Minister, Today we are calling on you to commit to positioning sport and physical activity at the heart of our nation’s post-Covid renewal. This appeal comes from a broad range of organisations that include governing bodies and those who represent hundreds of thousands of sports clubs and facilities. Our sports engage millions of children, young people, and adults every year. Our sector drives economic prosperity and social change in the UK, contributing over £16bn to the UK economy and employing more than 600,000 people. A report published by Sport England and Sheffield Hallam University this month showed that every £1 spent on community sport and physical activity generates nearly £4 for the English economy, providing an annual contribution of more than £85bn, with a social value – including physical and mental health and wellbeing, individual and community development – of more than £72bn. Grassroots sport, fitness, and wider recreational activity is proven to improve physical, mental, and social wellbeing. This makes our sector an essential service as our nation recovers from the damage caused by Covid-19. Prime Minister – you’ve long been a champion of the benefits of a physically active lifestyle and we were heartened to hear that commitment renewed this summer with the launch of the Government’s obesity strategy. Our combined sector is delighted to be showcasing its reach into the heart of communities this week as part of the inaugural Great British Week of Sport. However, we are united in our concern that at a time when our role should be central to the nation’s recovery, the future of the sector is perilous.
