#RockTheJuniors #HJWC2016 3 CNT Introduction A word from Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra, President of the International Hockey Federation

Dear Hockey Media Representative, On behalf of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), I would like to welcome you to the women’s Hockey Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile. The time has now come for sixteen of the best young women’s teams in the world to compete for the world title. This level is where new stars emerge and heroes are made. With a chance to be crowned Junior world champions, competition will be fierce and the games action packed. Spectators and athletes will therefore find this a hugely entertaining event. For many of the athletes, this will be the first time they have represented their nation on such a big stage. I’m sure they will be honoured to pull on their nation’s shirt as they showcase their talent to the world. This event will be hugely important in terms of their development as athletes but also personally. It will be a fantastic opportunity to learn from the many different cultures competing here and make life-long friendships which are integral to the spirit of the hockey family. It is the second time that the city of Santiago has played host to the women’s Junior World Cup, having also done so in 2005. It promises to be a very special occasion, and as such, I’m sure local sports fans will turn out to cheer on all of the teams taking part. I would like to thank the hosts and all of their partners for the tremendous effort that has gone in to holding this event. Our thanks must also go to the sponsors and all of the volunteers who are crucial to making this event a success. I wish all of the athletes and officials the best of luck and hope that in addition to the hockey you all get to enjoy the rich culture and warm hospitality offered by this wonderful country.

Yours in hockey.

Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra FIH President

#RockTheJuniors #HJWC2016 4 CNT About Santiago

From the Lonely Planet website:

Surprising, cosmopolitan, energetic, sophisticated and worldly, Santiago is a city of syncopated cultural currents, madhouse parties, expansive museums and top-flight restaurants. No wonder 40 percent of Chileans call the leafy capital city home. It’s a wonderful place for strolling, and each neighbourhood has its unique flavour and tone. Head out for the day to take in the museums, grand architecture and pedestrian malls of the Centro, before an afternoon picnic in one of the gorgeous hillside parks that punctuate the city’s landscape. Nightlife takes flight in the sidewalk eateries, cafes and beer halls of Barrios Brasil, Lastarria and Bellavista, while as you head east to well-heeled neighborhoods like Providencia and Las Condes, you’ll find tony restaurants and world-class hotels. With a growing economy, renovated arts scene and plenty of eccentricity to spare, Santiago is an old-guard city on the cusp of a modern-day renaissance.

#RockTheJuniors #HJWC2016 7 CNT Competition Format

In the preliminary round, the 16 teams are divided into four pools of four teams. Each team plays every other team in its pool. The pools were formulated based on the rankings of the senior teams ahead of the Rio 2016 , being adjusted to ensure that teams from the same continent were in different pools (where possible), as approved by the FIH Competitions Committee. The top two teams from each pool will progress to the quarter-finals, with the remaining eight teams playing for classification. The quarter-finals will be as follows, although the matches will not necessarily be played in this order:

1st Pool A v 2nd Pool B – Match 1 1st Pool D v 2nd Pool C – Match 2 1st Pool B v 2nd Pool A – Match 3 1st Pool C v 2nd Pool D – Match 4 The winners of these matches will qualify for the semi-finals and play for 1st to 4th places. The losing teams will play for 5th to 8th places. The semi-finals will be as follows, although the matches will not necessarily be played in this order:

Winner Match 1 v Winner Match 2 Winner Match 3 v Winner Match 4 The winners of these matches will play for 1st and 2nd places (the final) and the losers will play for 3rd and 4th places. The score at the end of the regulation time of these matches will be registered by the FIH as the result of the match. If at the end of the regulation time the result is a draw, in order to establish an outright winner of a classification match for the purpose of the competition, a shoot-out competition will be played to establish the winner of the match.

Now they have the World Cup in their sights, and arrive in Santiago with a squad packed with talent. Numerous players have represented the senior women’s team such as Renee Taylor, and Mariah Williams, with the latter having over 50 caps and being a member of the Hockeyroos squad that finished sixth at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Talented striker Grace Stewart is another Olympian from Rio, and has the potential to be one of the stars of the tournament.

One to watch: Already a prolific goal-scorer with the Hockeyroos, this 19-year-old is rated as one of Australia’s most promising individuals.

About the team: A bronze medal at the European Junior Nations Championships 2014 sealed England’s ticket to the Junior World Cup, where they will be aiming to better the fourth place finishes of 2009 and 2013 to secure a place on the podium in Santiago. The team recently competed in the 5 Nations Invitational competition in Valencia, finishing fourth behind hosts and winners Spain, second placed Germany and the third placed Belgium. Despite things not going entirely to plan in Valencia, the goals of Megan Crowson, who finished as competition top scorer, were certainly a positive. The team is coached by Craig Keegan, who was Assistant Coach to the Great Britain women’s team that won Olympic gold at Rio 2016.

About the team: New Zealand’s best finish in a Junior World Cup arrived at the 2001 event in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the team ended the competition in fifth. Could they exceed that performance on their return to South America? Quite possibly. Head Coach Sean Dancer, Assistant Coach to the Black Sticks women since 2014, has targeted a top eight finish and describes the group as “full of confidence to put in a strong performance.” Defender and senior international Maddison Dowe captains the team, being joined by three other members of the Black Sticks development squad: Stephanie Dickins, Tessa Jopp and Phoebe Steele.

About the team: The champions of Asia bring a strong side to Santiago that contains two players who were part of the senior team that competed in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. 19-year-old attacker Zhang Jinrong has played over 50 times for China’s senior women’s team, while U-21 captain Ou Zixia is a terrific defender who keeps her back-line well organised at all times. Interestingly, both players were members of the China team that finished 12th at the Ergo Hockey Junior World Cup 2013 in Mönchengladbach, Germany. The squad may have lost Gu Bingfeng, top scorer at the Junior Asia Cup 2015, due to being over the age limit, but this China side is one that will be rightly feared.

About the team: Spain arrive at the Junior World Cup in Santiago in excellent form, having recently won the 5 Nations Invitational event ahead of the likes of Germany, England and Belgium on home soil in Valencia. The team is coached by Adrian Lock, the Englishman who is currently working wonders with Spanish hockey. Lock guided Spain’s women to a better than expected eighth place finish at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and has clearly got his junior team very much on song. Current FIH Hero World Ranking (seniors): 14 How they qualified: 5th Place – European Junior Nations Championships 2014 (Waterloo, BEL) Junior World Cup history: 2013 – 13th

About the team: A fifth place finish at the European Junior Nations Championships 2014 on home soil in Waterloo secured Belgium’s safe passage through to the Junior World Cup in Santiago, where they will be aiming to achieve big things. The team recently claimed a creditable third place behind Spain and Germany at the 5 Nations Junior Invitational competition in Valencia, where Joanne Peeters and Stephanie Vanden Borre both scored twice. Peeters and Vanden Borre are two of four players named that were part of Belgium’s senior women’s victory in August’s 4 Nations Invitational event in Dublin featuring Ireland, Chile and Scotland. Pauline Leclef and Marie Ronquetti also competed in that event, with Ronquetti scoring twice. The team is coached by Xavier Reckinger, who as a player represented Belgium at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games.

One to watch: Stephanie Vanden Borre. Fast approaching 70 senior international appearances and at 16 Belgium’s youngest member of the Belgium squad that competed at the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014, the now 19-year-old Vanden Borre is one of the most promising talents in Belgian hockey.

The Hockey Revolution is the ten-year strategy for hockey that was launched by the FIH in 2014 and will set the direction of the sport leading to 2024, when the FIH will celebrate its centenary.

The Hockey Revolution has sparked a new era in hockey. With the ambition of making hockey a global game that inspires the next generation, it has been designed to unite the hockey community worldwide.

The strategy has one clear Ambition, four Big Goals and five Major Initiatives aimed at increasing attractiveness of hockey for fans. It has been designed to unite the hockey family at every level as it is only if we work together that this revolution will bring results.

#RockTheJuniors #HJWC2016 50 CNT The Future of International Hockey

In April 2015, FIH announced that a new portfolio of events will be launched in 2019 which will completely change the landscape of international hockey.

Designed to provide a regular calendar of must see events played in packed stadia across the world throughout the year, a new annual global home and away league involving the world’s leading hockey nations will complement the Hockey World Cup and Olympic Games tournaments.

This system will see international teams play against opponents once at home and once away each year in this league. Following several months of competition, the top ranked teams will then qualify for a stand-alone grand finale tournament which will determine the winners of the competition. This will form part of a three tier system, identical for both the men’s and women’s game.

These have been developed around the three main objectives of the new event portfolio - to generate a massive change in TV and media coverage for hockey; create big, bold, packed and loud events and make a step change to increase future revenues.

For those nations not in the home and away league, the next tier of competition will remain similar to the current Hockey World League Round 1 and 2 events, played over two year cycles.
