We can trace a progression among them: • 28:1, Fall of Samaria, with warning to Jerusalem that she is little better • 29:1, Religious hypocrisy in Jerusalem, leading to the Lord's blinding their wise men • 29:15, Woe to them that hide their own counsel from the Lord (general principle concerning the appeal to Egypt, but without reference to Egypt) • 30:1, Woe to them that take counsel, but not of the Lord (makes the reference to Egypt explicitly; focus on Israel's sin and restoration) • 31:1, Woe to them that go down to Egypt (acting on their godless plan; the Egyptian failure and the Lord's deliverance as a more general pattern) • 33:1, The destruction of Assyria This woe extends through ch. 32, since the next begins in 33:1. There are three pairs of paragraphs. In each pair, the first points out the people's sin and predicts the Lord's judgment on somebody, while the second looks forward to his blessing on his people. -

© Living Hope Church 1 June 2008 Rebels and Repenters Isaiah 29-31 (read Isaiah 31:1-7) Introduction A. In this sermon I aim to give the sense of Isaiah 29-31. My title is Rebels and Repenters because those are the only two options for Isaiah and Israel--and for us. 1. Isaiah 7-39 are summed up effectively with this one brief statement from Isaiah 36:5: Isaiah 36:5 (ESV) In whom do you now trust? 2. Everyday we each trust someone(s) for something(s). To trust God (and not ourselves or our money or our things) is to bring God great pleasure and glory. He loves to be trusted. B. But, the people of God (referred to in Isaiah 29 as the house of Jacob) are choosing to place their faith and trust in themselves (their strength and ability). 1. The leaders have attempted to form an alliance with Egypt so that they will be able to stand against Assyria. The help of Egypt is worthless. 2. This action reveals their heart toward God. They believe God is worthless. C. Therefore, God refers to them as a rebellious people. They are rebels. Here in Isaiah 29-31 they are invited and commanded to repent. 1. Jerusalem will come under siege and they will be delivered from the Assyrians by the hand of God. Sadly, this deliverance will not endure. They will not ultimately be repenters. 2. I have two main points. Here in Isaiah 29-31 we learn what a rebel looks like (or be reminded). -

Not that the question had actually been settled before, as can be observed from the various Church councils throughout the last two thousand years with their decisions, and the fact that different Christian denominations often have very different books included in their Biblical Canons. Even Churches who are in communion with each other disagree over the question of which books belong in the Holy Bible. One Church which occupies a unique position in this regard is the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church. A Commentary on the Book of Isaiah By Pastor Galen L. Doughty Southside Christian Church September 2018 INTRODUCTION: This commentary is based upon my personal devotional notes and reflections on the Book of Isaiah. It is intended to help you better understand some of the historical background of the book and the theological issues in Isaiah’s prophecy. It is not a technical commentary designed for academic projects so I do not use footnotes or include a bibliography. This material is intended for use by members and friends of Southside Christian Church to help you in a verse by verse study of Isaiah. I try as much as possible to link what Isaiah says with other parts of the Bible especially the New Testament so readers can see the connections in Scripture. In the commentary there are occasional references to the original Hebrew words Isaiah used in a particular passage. Those Hebrew words are always written in italics and are transliterated into English from the Hebrew. I go chapter by chapter in the commentary and sometimes individual verses are commented upon, sometimes it is several sentences and sometimes a whole paragraph. This commentary is based on the New International Version and all Scripture quotations are taken from that version of the Bible. Books of the Bible, Scripture references and quotes are also italicized. DATE AND AUTHORSHIP: There is no disagreement among scholars that Isaiah needs to be split into two sections. The first from chapters 1-39 is set during Isaiah’s lifetime in the days of Kings Ahaz and Hezekiah of Judah and the destruction of the north Kingdom of Israel by the Assyrian Empire. -

Isaiah Sermon Series Supports Session 6: God Protects Sermon Title: “Saviors: True and False” (Isaiah 30) Connection to Isaiah 31 Isaiah 28–35 portray the internal struggle that takes place in the life of King Hezekiah. Hezekiah has to weigh his options and make up his mind who he is going to trust for deliverance of Judah. His bad advisors urge him to trust Egypt for deliverance against the Assyrians (Isa. 30–31) Chapter 30 sets the stage for Isaiah’s confrontation with the King in chapter 31. Introduction/Opening Do you believe that God is big or small”? Do you believe that God is able to deliver and save in spite of how big the threat is or not? Is God a worthy Savior in spite of what we see? If we believe that God is able, we will have no problem trusting Him to save us. If we believe that God is small, we will look to idols to be our refuge. In Isaiah 30, we are forced to deal with issues of the heart. We need to know if we are trusting in false gods and have our hearts exposed of the false saviors we so easily cling to. Outline 1. The Context Bible Life Group Lesson 8 John 4:27 - 4:45 Introduction to the Context Bible Have you ever wished the Bible was easier to read through like an ordinary book – cover to cover? Because the Bible is a collection of 66 books, it makes reading like an ordinary book quite difficult. Compounding this difficulty is the fact that the later writers of the New Testament, were often quoting or referencing passages in the Old Testament. In fact, much of the New Testament makes better sense only if one also considers the Old Testament passages that place the text into its scriptural context. You are reading a running commentary to The Context Bible. This arrangement of Scripture seeks to overcome some of these difficulties. Using a core reading of John’s gospel, the book of Acts, and the Revelation of John, the Context Bible arranges all the rest of Scripture into a contextual framework that supports the core reading. It is broken out into daily readings so that this program allows one to read the entire Bible in a year, but in a contextual format. Isaiah Chapter 31
Isaiah Chapter 31 Verses 31:1-9: Isaiah turns his attention again to those who would advocate a pro-Egyptian alliance for the protection of Judah. He observes that they “stay” (or “lean”), “on horses” and “trust in chariots” rather than God who is a “spirit”. The use of the symbols of a “lion” and “Birds flying” reflects the national symbol of Assyria, the winged lion. The prophet again calls on his listeners to “turn” or repent. This is the very heart of his message to the wayward nation. Isaiah 31:1 "Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because [they are] many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!" Egypt’s horses and chariots were numerous (1 Kings 10:28-29). Its flat topography was well suited for chariotry. They would be useful to Israel against the Assyrian cavalry. “Neither seek the Lord,” what made Israel’s turning to Egypt most despicable was her accompanying turning away from the Lord. We saw in the last lesson that, God is terribly displeased, when they look to Egypt for help, instead of to Him. As we have said so many times, Egypt is a type of the world. Notice this stresses more than ever, that their trust is in the horses and chariots that the Egyptian army can bring against Assyria. They have turned away from God, and sought help from the world. The world does not have answers to problems. -

Teaching the Bible Lecture 8: Prophecy (I) Classically with Dr. Fred Putnam Outline: Introduction Canonical prophets have a book named for them. Non-canonical prophets do not have a book named for them. They are part of the Bible, but they didn’t contribute to the canon as far as we know. Major Prophets are the longer books (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel). Major Prophets are the shorter books (Hosea through Haggai). What is a prophet? The first prophet is Abraham. Someone who prays for someone else. Abimelech and his household were prayed for and healed. The call of Moses: o Exodus chapter 4 o I will put the words in your mouth and you will put the words in Aaron’s mouth. o A prophet is someone who speaks for someone else. In Acts, the crowd called Paul, Hermes, and Barnabas, they called Zeus. Paul did all the talking. The messenger did all the talking for the king. The prophets are speaking for God. o In Ezekiel, the Lord said to take the scroll and eat it. o God literally puts the words in the mouth of the prophet. The prophets are taught by God because they have been called by God. o The prophets were called in different ways. o Isaiah has a vision. Ezekiel has a fantastical vision. Jeremiah is spoken to by the Lord. Amos says, “I am not a prophet nor the son of a prophet.” Content of Prophetic Books Most of the content is preaching. o The prophets are coming to the Israelites telling them that they have broken the covenant.
