Such a short time ago we Did kind mentors give you much time and patience were dealing with drought and dangerous fires in (emphasis on the latter) getting you started ? Does just a few weeks, watching the weather turn again every member do enough to encourage beginners, to the very real risk of flooding. including those youthful and those not so young ? So too is diversity within clubs and members, with Are those who don’t have that yearn for future some keen for the thrill of competing in CDEs and competition a bit too much of a yawn to encourage shows, or maybe endurance, and others preferring into harness ? Should there be a scheme to those long distance ‘pleasure’ drives (although also encourage juniors towards future ‘pleasure’ somewhat competitive, I suspect). However I think driving ? Last week three of our members gave their time freely – doing minor repairs on a jogger and fitting harness on a keen youngster’s horse. Maybe a future junior member ? Maybe a future Boyd Exell ? Who knows? But if we don’t take the time to mentor ALL classes of potential drivers, what will we have for the future of the ACDS and driving ? It’s a form of horsemanship that has its own unique skill set, not to mention specialized equipment. It needs to be encouraged fully. It would be a sad day if the knowledge and ability to drive a horse or pony dwindled to a meager few. Does anyone else care ? I certainly do. Can the ACDS maintain an organization that continues to appeal to all comers ? Being part of an organization has both positives and negatives. It depends where you sit. We do tend to be a bit free-time poor these days, and there’s management of risk and the possibility of litigation to consider, not to mention constant fee increases. CAMDEN HARNESS CLUB Carol Fitzpatrick: Camden Club members often meet for weekday drives in the extensive grounds of Bicentennial Park Camden. On Friday February 21 2020, five drivers gathered for an outing. They were Carol Fitzpatrick with Ricky, Sally Crowell with Monty, Danni Katon with Maddie, Charlotte Hyles with Ziva and Annette Campbell with Netty. The morning was spent in sunshine and green paddocks, travelling through most of the park, including through several water obstacles. It was Annette’s first drive in the park so the route included a trip to the top of the hill, affording a Carolyn Kinleyside with Monty at the Nowra Show wonderful view of the valley. In the past we had a play with painting on scraps of wood, plastic and tin. But this time I would like to have everyone design and complete a project like a painted board the size of a dashboard. BUNGENDORE CARRIAGE DRIVING SOCIETY Sarah Keevers: Club members are looking forward to another fun filled and exciting year of carriage driving, and many members are already preparing to attend events in the coming couple of months. The Bungendore Club will be hosting a Graded Driven Dressage Day on Saturday March 14 2020, and the Munro Cup on Sunday March 15 2020 at Witwood, and extends a warm welcome to all drivers and spectators for the weekend. The Keevers and Harrington families would like to express their heartfelt thanks to all ACDS Getting Koriana Absolute Star (Buddy) members who came together to help them during back to work (T Smith) the bushfire crisis. TEMORA CARRIAGE CLUB Sharon Beattie: At Temora it has been hot both day and night over summer, too hot to conduct a twilight drive. Our dams continued to evaporate and one by one dried up. We would see a storm approaching on the radar, but sadly when the clouds were in sight, we watched the rain evaporate in the heat before it came anywhere near the ground. I know this is common across NSW and drought has been with us for three years now, after the wet year of 2016. As I sit here typing this late at night in February, I can hear three different species of frogs calling for mates from the dam behind the house, which now has water in it for the first time in a year. I’ve had 5 to 8mm almost every day for the last week. The air is so clear and refreshing. I love the smell of rain and the sound as it hits a tin roof. Smoke haze stayed with us most of January. The closest fire was a grass fire near Cootamundra. Our thoughts were always of the people and animals in the fire zones. FIRE AND FLOOD EXPERIENCES FOR CAMDEN MEMBERS

Evacuees camping at Bicentennial Park Camden under smoky skies in November

Camden Club members Sally Crowell and the Kinleyside family had to evacuate their properties in Theresa Park and Orangeville in November due to the threat of fire from the Green Wattle Creek fire. Camden Bicentennial Park was opened for evacuees and their animals. There were good yards, power and amenities and everyone was well looked after with plenty of food provided, water and even hay for the horses. Thankfully, though the fires came extremely close, there were no losses. It was a different matter recently when 450mm fell in three days causing widespread flooding in the area, but the dams are full and the tanks are full and no one is complaining! Carolyn Kinleyside
