Storyline: Green Bay safety Nick Collins (Bethune-Cookman) returned an intercep- tion 37 yards for a touchdown to help the Packers lead 14-0 after one quarter on the way to a 31-25 win over Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XLV in the new Cowboys’ Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Packers led 21-3 at one point, 21-10 at the half, and watched the Steelers pull within 28-25 midway thru the fourth quarter but turned away a late Pitts- burgh drive for the lead.
Pittsburgh Isaac Redman, RB (Bowie State) Two carries for 19 yards and one kickoff return for 12 yards in loss to Packers. - Runs up the middle for 3-yard gain early in third quarter. Two plays later runs over left end for 16 yards to the Green Bay 8-yard line. Mendenhall goes over on next play from the 8 for a touchdown (Green Bay 21, Pittsburgh 17, 10:25). - Returns fourth-quarter kickoff after Packers’ late field goal for 12 yards.
Green Bay Donald Driver, WR (Alcorn State) Two receptions for 28 yards before injuring ankle in Packers win over Pittsburgh. - Catches 24-yard deep slant over the middle from quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Packers’ first drive and third play of the game. - Catches 4-yard pass on short left in second quarter. - Injures ankle taken for x-rays in second quarter. X-rays were neg- ative; return questionable. Decided in third quarter that he would not return to the game. Nick Collins, S (Bethune-Cookman) One interception returned 37 yards for a TD, three solo tackles in Green Bay win. - On first Pittsburgh play from scrimmage after Packers’ first touchdown in first quar- ter, intercepts pass from Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger intended for Mike Wallace returns it 37 yards for a touchdown. Collins penalized after touchdown for un- sportsmanline conduct. (3:34, Green Bay 14, Pittsburgh 0). - Tackles Wallace after 4-yard completion on short left early in second quarter. On next play, Pittsburgh placekicker Shaun Suisham is good on 33-yard field goal (Green Bay 14, Pittsbuugh 3, 11:08). - Stops wide receiver Antonio Brown after 1-yard short left completion late in hte sec- ond quarter. Two plays later, Roethlisberger hits Ward on 8-yard touchdown pass (Green Bay 14, Pittsburgh 7, :47). - Tackles running back Rashad Mendenhall after 17-yard gain early in third quarter.
MVP: Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay - 24 of 39 for 309 yards, 3 TDs
KEY FACTS: Green Bay veteran wide receiver Donald Driver (Alcorn State) was hurt in the first half but that didn’t stop quarterback Aaron Rodgers who threw two touch- down passes to Greg Jennings and one to Jordy Nelson en route to 309 passing yards and the MVP award. Pittsburgh had three turnovers, two on interceptions of Roethlis- berger (25 of 40, 253 yards, 2 TDs) and one critical fumble by Mendenhall.
PICK ONE: Green Bay safety Nick Collins (Bethune-Cookman) runs under a fluttering pass in- tended for Pittsburgh’s Mike Wallace (#17) with Tramon Williams (#38) running in coverage. Collins hauled it in at the Pittsburgh 37 and headed toward the Steelers end zone.
