Throughout lockdown it had provided a reason for the elderly or those feeling lonely to come out each day to see what was there and have a chat with others. It had also begun to support families who found themselves furloughed or even out of work. A call was put out on village social media for ideas and the resounding view was to acquire a shed. Many kindly contributed to the cost including the church benefice and a generous anonymous donation (if you’re reading this, thank you from all our hearts). Items donated to The Shed The community spirit didn’t end there. Stacey made an emotional appeal on social media, calling upon the village to help construct the shed. Her pleas were answered, and a flow of tradesmen and volunteers arrived and just seven hours later foundations were laid, and the shed was up. Thank you, thank you, thank you – for all your time, help, skills and love. So here we are in April 2021. We’ve been through three lockdowns and the shed continues to support an increasing number of villagers.

We are exploring links to supermarkets and other suppliers and charities and hope to have some success in forging new partnerships. The shed needs regular donations of food and essential items. You may see items on special offer at the supermarket or wish to regularly purchase a few extra items in your weekly shop to donate. All help is very much appreciated!

Yapton Free Church Easter open air service Report by Joanna Jeffers

Firstly, all of us at Yapton Free Church hope you had a very Happy Easter and have been able to enjoy some of the lovely Spring weather we are now experiencing. On April 28th we began a new series of the Alpha course at the Old Church Building. It takes place every Wednesday evening 7:30pm – 9:30pm and is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. It’s not too late to join the current Alpha course, if you would like to come along email Jo on admin@ yaptonfreechurch.net or call the office on 01243 552232. You can check out a short video about Alpha on YouTube by putting the following link in your browser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fViYK_ Xb3Wg&t=1s You can also read some testimonies from past Alpha attendees on the Community page of our church website. With the new government guidelines, all our youth events are now able to be held face to face and we have a variety of groups who meet throughout the week. Our Friday Night Youth Club is back up and running 7:30pm- Toddler group 9pm. We have lots of fun activities planned including football, fire pits, games and movie nights. The ‘subs’ are just £1 each which helps to upkeep the equipment we use and do fun things throughout the year. As well as our regular Sunday Service we are also now running a youth worship service on the 2nd Sunday of the month 7pm – 8pm. All secondary school aged pupils 11+ are invited to join us at any of our groups.

The business of the Council at its May meeting reflects on the previous year’s activities and at the same time sets up the framework for conducting the Council’s business for the year ahead. Last year due to lockdown restrictions the Parish Council meetings in May had to be cancelled. These meetings were rescheduled to take place in July, albeit remotely. This year we have reverted back to May and taken advantage of one of the last times we could meet virtually as the Government has not extended the legislation to enable the Parish Council to meet remotely in the future.

Annual Parish Meeting – this meeting was cancelled last year, and this year opened the evening of four meetings. This meeting is designed to give all those living in the parish the chance to hear the Chairman’s Annual Report on the activities of the Parish Council in the previous year, and to see how the parish council tax has been spent in the year.

Annual Meeting of the Parish Council – this was the second meeting in the series of four meetings held on that evening. This is effectively the AGM of the Parish Council and appointments are made to the five committees and representatives are appointed to sit on various external bodies. The audited accounts are also received and agreed by this meeting.

Councillor Stephen Haymes was re-elected Chairman of the Parish Council and Councillor Peter Dunkley was re-elected Vice-Chairman.

The following were elected to the five committees:

• ALLOTMENTS: Mark Andrews

• EMERGENCY & RESILIENCE: Derek Ambler, Mrs Pam Evans, Mrs Philippa Greenan and Mrs Amanda Worne

• PLANNING: Derek Ambler, Mark Andrews, Peter Dunkley, Mrs Vicky Newman and Mrs Amanda Worne.

• PLAYING FIELD: Peter Dunkley and Michael O’Dell

• STAFFING: Stephen Haymes, Peter Dunkley and Mrs Philippa Greenan

• YAPTON NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – the parish council agreed that Derek Ambler and Mrs Vicky Newman would be the Council’s representatives on the Yapton Neighbourhood Plan Steering group.

Following on from the AGM an ordinary meeting of the Parish Council took place - to deal with the routine parish council business and the Planning Committee met to deal with planning matters and to agree the Parish’s response to current planning applications.

Grants to Voluntary Organisations 2021 – The Council is seeking applications for grant assistance From local voluntary and charitable organisations. The closing date for applications is 30th June 2021 for consideration at its July meeting. Application forms can be downloaded from the Council’s website or from the Clerk of the Council.

Next meeting: 12th July 2021 - Planning Committee commencing at 7pm followed by the Parish Council Meeting at 7.30pm or at the conclusion of the Planning Committee. The venue (to be advised later) would usually be in the Club Room of the Yapton & Ford Village Hall, Main Road, Yapton. The meetings are open to the public and you are very welcome to attend.
