EvEry thing is Pol itical andrea Bowers / Daniel Joseph Martinez FOCA 2 everything is political BEtween a rock anD a harD PlacE: FroM raDical art to raDical OptiMisM lucía sanromán 4 everything is political if a rock is thrown into a pond and no one observes its shockwaves, does it still make an impact? This play on the Platonic metaphor comes to mind when considering Andrea Bowers and Daniel Joseph Martinez’s exhibition for the Fellows of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Martinez has used a similar image to describe the conceptual underpinnings of their shared exhibition: His sculpture of a taxidermied hare, eviscerated and stuffed with dynamite sticks, hangs from the ceiling of the Fellows’ Chinatown gallery like a thrown rock caught suspended in mid-air in the moment just before it hits its target. Encircling the corpse is a grouping of 8 plastic tables lined with 15 metal chairs—this is the furniture that typically populates the space, which also functions as the office for the 6 everything is political organization and frequently hosts board meetings, juries, and panels. Andrea Bowers, whose laborious, handcrafted work often appropriates domestic or functional objects, has applied the name of a late contemporary artist to the back of each folding chair; under each seat she has pasted the artist’s obituary—an honor …art objects roll that lists a crucial group of activist artists who have influenced her practice. Interlaced with the space’s utilitarian furnishings, the intervention created by these works discloses the function of the room and stages a generative opposition not just to the space, but between the works themselves: Martinez’ dead hare is a can be thE bomb, a projectile, an incendiary device meant to provoke a chain reaction that begins at the heart of the gallery/board room.

For the first time in the Fair’s 29-year history, ARCOmadrid is honoring a city, rather than a country, in a special exhibition titled Panorama: Los Angeles, recognizing L.A. as one of the most prolific and vibrant contemporary arts centers in the international art world. Curated by Los Angeles–based independent curators Kris Kuramitsu and Christopher Miles and sponsored by the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Panorama: Los Angeles presents a timely cross-section of the diversity of work being made in L.A. in terms of media, genre, and inclination, and produced by artists who vary in background, generation, and notoriety. The artists are represented by galleries ranging from some of the most longstanding and established in Los Angeles to some that have opened only in the last few years, and span the city from the west-side, to mid-city, to downtown.

Louver is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Don Suggs (1945-2019), 11 March – 2 May 2020. Titled Face-Off, the exhibition includes never-before-seen paintings created by Suggs 2017-2019. In this series, Suggs superimposed delineated figurative forms over colorful geometric abstractions. The underlying shapes appear to influence the characteristics and positioning of the graphic characters, which are staged in various stages of confrontation and emotion. While appearing lighthearted upon initial encounter, their subjects, at times, touch on the political but moreover, speak to the human condition. In several works, faces are fractured with line renderings of anthropomorphized trees and animal forms, while others include disembodied human hands and masks; all are marked with the same sharp-witted irreverent intellect and intense interrogation that is a hallmark of Suggs’ long career as an artist. Featuring more than a dozen paintings, the comical portrayals are belied by Suggs’ intrinsic eye for color and his deft mark-making skills, from subtle tonal arrangements and painterly streaks, to bold vibrant contrasts and agile calligraphic lines. A master of the flowing mark, every action is precise, confident and deliberate. However varied in composition, scale and technique, these works are rooted in drawing. Suggs had habitually maintained a routine of drawing on notecards he kept in his shirt pocket.
