Parrotheads, Cheeseburgers, and Paradise: Adult Music Fandom & Fan Practices PARROTHEADS, CHEESEBURGERS, AND PARADISE: ADULT MUSIC FANDOM & FAN PRACTICES Kelly C. MacDonald Weeks A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2012 Committee: Dr. Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Dr. Cindy Hendricks Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Susana Peña Dr. Donald McQuarie Robert Sloane © 2012 Kelly C. MacDonald Weeks All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Jimmy Buffett’s beach bum lifestyle music was essentially solidified with his album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes in 1977, and it is his fans, collectively known as Parrotheads, who have continued to help him achieve such success. This dissertation examines not only Parrotheads, but also the ways in which this fan group has invested in, and engaged with, the “Margaritaville State of Mind” that Buffett and his fans have cultivated together. Derived from Buffett’s hit song, “Margaritaville,” Buffett’s beach bum escapism ethos has transformed his fandom into an experience and, further, a lifestyle – a state of mind and a state of being – to be enjoyed by his fans whether it is through their celebration of their fandom, or even in the goods and services they purchase. Moreso, this work explores various ways that a tropical escapism lifestyle is evoked and developed by Parrotheads through the many fan activities they engage with as part of belonging to their local Parrothead clubs. Parrotheads have chosen, as an integral part of their fandom, to raise money for local social and environmental charities, all in the name of their fandom. Another aspect examined in this dissertation investigates how Parrotheads are not only developing and becoming active participants, but also performing their fandom in social networking sites developed specifically for them. Ultimately, this project highlights how some music fans are embracing new types of music-centered leisure cultures in contemporary society. Parrotheads are a fascinating example of an organization functioning as a social club, united by love of a musician and his message; in this instance, a iv literal and figurative investment in Jimmy Buffett and his trop-rock music, from which they have worked together to cultivate a mythical Margaritaville. v To music fans everywhere. vi ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to first and foremost thank all of the wonderful Parrotheads who helped me with this study. They are the heart and soul of this work and without their enthusiasm and encouragement this project could not have been done. A very sincere thank you to my dissertation committee for their endless support and enthusiasm for my dissertation: Radhika Gajjala, Susana Peña, Donald McQuarie, Robert Sloane, and Cindy Hendricks. I genuinely appreciate the opportunity to have learned so much from each and every one of you during my time at BGSU. This dissertation could not have been completed without the love and support of those around me. To that end I cannot thank enough my fellow colleagues and friends in Bowling Green for the endless fun, ridiculously nerdy and brilliant conversations, and all around awesomeness. Thank you Melissa Mills-Dick, Justin Philpot, Stephanie and Tim Plummer, Martin and Angela Zimmann, Carolyn and Tom Strong, Phillip Cunningham, and Ben Phillips. Included in this fantastic bunch is the Quatro (and W.O.M.) Katie Barak, Melinda Lewis, and Eric Weeks – I don’t think I would have survived without the adventures, silliness, and impromptu dance parties!! Thank you too to my friends and family outside of Bowling Green. To my friends and colleagues from my Master’s program at the University of Massachusetts Boston – I cannot wait until we all get to yuck it up one day at a conference someday soon. To Allison Phillips and Jennifer Watanabe (and their loving husbands Andy Phillips and Jeff Watanabe) – we had so much fun going to as many concerts as our wallets would allow as younger versions of ourselves. I know, without a doubt, that almost all of the work I’ve done during my graduate school career has been inspired by these wonderful experiences. vii To my mom, Lily, who took me to my very first concert, New Kids on the Block, in the third grade, and my dad, Mac, who went me to my first Dave Matthews Band concert during high school – I can’t even begin to put into words how much your love and support as meant to me. I’m sure it couldn’t have been easy all these years to explain what exactly it is that I do and study, and then to have to reassure people that it is actually a legitimate thing! To my little sister Nikki, thank you for introducing me to your own special music fandom and for being an incredible support throughout the years – I shipped it!! Last but certainly not least to my husband Eric Weeks – you are my sanity. Thank you for reading through countless drafts of my work, and for reassuring me and making me laugh when I was stressed out of my mind. I cannot begin to imagine what this crazy adventure called a PhD program would have been like without finding you. viii TABLE OF CONTENTS Page INTRODUCTION ...................................................................................................................... 1 Literature Review ........................................................................................................... 7 Methodological Approach: Ethnography and Cyber-Ethnography ............... 7 Fandom ............................................................................................................... 10 Fan Labor ........................................................................................................... 18 Social Network Scholarship .............................................................................. 23 Chapter Summaries ........................................................................................................ 27 CHAPTER I. • Parrot Head Members Survived the Winter and Are Ready to Fly Into Some Sunny Warm Weather
Issue #26 Winter 2012 Business Tagline or Motto HELLO from the President's Perch CONTENTS : By the time this edition arrives, we will be almost through what has been a mild winter. I hope all of our Parrot Head members survived the winter and are ready to fly into some sunny warm weather. Things were certainly not mild or cold in our Berks County Parrot Head Club. Christmas in the Caribbean 2 In December we hosted another successful Toys for Tots party at the Christmas in the Caribbean Spruce and delivered more toys and cash to the Marines than any prior Afterparty 3 year. Things heated up even more with the 4th annual Christmas show Cabin Fever Festival 4 at the Miller Center on December 17th. The Club Trini band (Michael Photomontage I 5 Utley and Robert Greenidge) was enjoyed by all. Jimmy and the Parrots entertained almost 200 members and guests at the after party (in the Viva lounge) that included a “Quick Licks” featuring buffet and a few drinks. Through your efforts and your support of the show we raised $14,000 for Robert Greenidge 6 Crime Alert Berks. Toys for Tots 7 Winter Cabin Fever was next, and Berks Encore was the chosen charity this year. In our In Memoriam 7 efforts to make each event better than the one before, we changed a few things from 2011. Trivia 8 Thanks to the great support from Crowne Plaza and general manager Craig Poole, we held the Phledgling Phlockers 9 event on a Saturday Night for the first time.

The OCPHC was the national host for The Last Mango in Irvine Party. Word of the party went out on the club Facebook page and a pre-concert tailgate was planned near the event. Several club members joined the official Club RV to help prepare for the party. Much to our surprise, more than 10 additional RVs from all across the country joined us to get ready and gear up for the concert. Our old friend Jimmy Groovy showed up in costume and added to the pre-concert fun. Once inside the parking lot, Jerry Gontang played to the huge crowd In This Issue around the OCPHC event site. A.J.’s famous Cheeseburgers in Paradise were on the grill all were partying just like Bubba does in Pg 1: Last Mango in Irvine preparation for the concert. Once inside the venue, Jimmy and the CRB did not disappoint. The 26 song set included a tribute to Jimmy’s Pg 2: Andy’s Irvine Letter friend, Glenn Frey of The Eagles, who recently passed away. The show concluded in appropriate fashion with an acoustic version Pg 3: Tilleritaville of Lovely Cruise. • Neglected Jazz Figures of the 1950S and Early 1960S New World NW 275
Introspection: Neglected Jazz Figures of the 1950s and early 1960s New World NW 275 In the contemporary world of platinum albums and music stations that have adopted limited programming (such as choosing from the Top Forty), even the most acclaimed jazz geniuses—the Armstrongs, Ellingtons, and Parkers—are neglected in terms of the amount of their music that gets heard. Acknowledgment by critics and historians works against neglect, of course, but is no guarantee that a musician will be heard either, just as a few records issued under someone’s name are not truly synonymous with attention. In this album we are concerned with musicians who have found it difficult—occasionally impossible—to record and publicly perform their own music. These six men, who by no means exhaust the legion of the neglected, are linked by the individuality and high quality of their conceptions, as well as by the tenaciousness of their struggle to maintain those conceptions in a world that at best has remained indifferent. Such perseverance in a hostile environment suggests the familiar melodramatic narrative of the suffering artist, and indeed these men have endured a disproportionate share of misfortunes and horrors. That four of the six are now dead indicates the severity of the struggle; the enduring strength of their music, however, is proof that none of these artists was ultimately defeated. Selecting the fifties and sixties as the focus for our investigation is hardly mandatory, for we might look back to earlier years and consider such players as Joe Smith (1902-1937), the supremely lyrical trumpeter who contributed so much to the music of Bessie Smith and Fletcher Henderson; or Dick Wilson (1911-1941), the promising tenor saxophonist featured with Andy Kirk’s Clouds of Joy; or Frankie Newton (1906-1954), whose unique muted-trumpet sound was overlooked during the swing era and whose leftist politics contributed to further neglect.

  • Visualizing Levinas:Existence and Existents Through Mulholland Drive
VISUALIZING LEVINAS: EXISTENCE AND EXISTENTS THROUGH MULHOLLAND DRIVE, MEMENTO, AND VANILLA SKY Holly Lynn Baumgartner A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2005 Committee: Ellen Berry, Advisor Kris Blair Don Callen Edward Danziger Graduate Faculty Representative Erin Labbie ii © 2005 Holly Lynn Baumgartner All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen Berry, Advisor This dissertation engages in an intentional analysis of philosopher Emmanuel Levinas’s book Existence and Existents through the reading of three films: Memento (2001), Vanilla Sky (2001), and Mulholland Drive, (2001). The “modes” and other events of being that Levinas associates with the process of consciousness in Existence and Existents, such as fatigue, light, hypostasis, position, sleep, and time, are examined here. Additionally, the most contested spaces in the films, described as a “Waking Dream,” is set into play with Levinas’s work/ The magnification of certain points of entry into Levinas’s philosophy opened up new pathways for thinking about method itself. Philosophically, this dissertation considers the question of how we become subjects, existents who have taken up Existence, and how that process might be revealed in film/ Additionally, the importance of Existence and Existents both on its own merit and to Levinas’s body of work as a whole, especially to his ethical project is underscored. A second set of entry points are explored in the conclusion of this dissertation, in particular how film functions in relation to philosophy, specifically that of Levinas. What kind of critical stance toward film would be an ethical one? Does the very materiality of film, its fracturing of narrative, time, and space, provide an embodied formulation of some of the basic tenets of Levinas’s thinking? Does it create its own philosophy through its format? And finally, analyzing the results of the project yielded far more complicated and unsettling questions than they answered.
