  • Popular Political Oratory and Itinerant Lecturing in Yorkshire and the North East in the Age of Chartism, 1837-60 Janette Lisa M
Popular political oratory and itinerant lecturing in Yorkshire and the North East in the age of Chartism, 1837-60 Janette Lisa Martin This thesis is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of York Department of History January 2010 ABSTRACT Itinerant lecturers declaiming upon free trade, Chartism, temperance, or anti- slavery could be heard in market places and halls across the country during the years 1837- 60. The power of the spoken word was such that all major pressure groups employed lecturers and sent them on extensive tours. Print historians tend to overplay the importance of newspapers and tracts in disseminating political ideas and forming public opinion. This thesis demonstrates the importance of older, traditional forms of communication. Inert printed pages were no match for charismatic oratory. Combining personal magnetism, drama and immediacy, the itinerant lecturer was the most effective medium through which to reach those with limited access to books, newspapers or national political culture. Orators crucially united their dispersed audiences in national struggles for reform, fomenting discussion and coalescing political opinion, while railways, the telegraph and expanding press reportage allowed speakers and their arguments to circulate rapidly. Understanding of political oratory and public meetings has been skewed by over- emphasis upon the hustings and high-profile politicians. This has generated two misconceptions: that political meetings were generally rowdy and that a golden age of political oratory was secured only through Gladstone’s legendary stumping tours. However, this thesis argues that, far from being disorderly, public meetings were carefully regulated and controlled offering disenfranchised males a genuine democratic space for political discussion.

David Horsley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 10/12/2015, 22:11 David Horsley David Horsley (March 11, 1873 – February 23, 1933) was an English-born pioneer of the film industry who built the first film studio in Hollywood. Born in West Stanley, Durham, England, a small coal mining village where his entire family worked in the mines. At age nine, he fell on the railway tracks and his hand was badly injured when the train ran over it. Without proper medical care, and fearful of deadly gangrene poisoning, his arm was amputated about two inches below the elbow. In 1884, the family emigrated to the United States, settling in Bayonne, New Jersey where as a young man he built a bicycle business and ran a pool hall. It was then that he met a former employee of Biograph Studios, Charles Gorman, and along with his brother William Horsley (1870–1956), they formed the Centaur Film Company. By 1910 their operation was producing three films a week, including the Mutt and Jeff comedies. David and William Horsely, along with other film independents, succeeded in defeating the monopolistic hold on the industry of Thomas Edison's Motion Picture Patents Company. However, weather conditions on the east coast made filming an uncertain proposition because camera technology at the time relied on sunshine. Frustrated, and realizing that California afforded the opportunity to make films year round, David Horsley moved his operations to the west coast. Among the first motion pictures ever filmed in Hollywood was taken on October 26, 1911 in the orchards of H J Whitley's estate (D.W.

You said: We will do….. TOWNSTANLEY COUNCIL Strategic Town Plan 2009-14 Your Council is committed to improving your area, improving the quality of life and developing a sense of pride by working together to ensure that our actions reflect your priorities. Foreword This Strategic Town Plan sets out the substance behind Stanley Town Council’s vision, aims and objectives and the manner in which the Council intends to be an advocate for local people and a catalyst for real and lasting change. As a new Council, the contents focus closely on public consultation during 2008, numerous meetings with service managers during 2009 and cognisance of local, regional and national priorities and the constantly evolving financial and political environment. Therefore the Strategic Town Plan is a‘living’document intended to help drive positive change over the medium and longer terms, and of behalf of the Council, I commend its contents to all concerned. Tom Pattinson Chair of Stanley Town Council (2009-10) Having been connected to community groups and active in local representative and participative democracy for many years, I am acutely aware of the need for effective co-ordination of much of the excellent work undertaken in a disparate fashion by numerous local bodies. The recent formation of Stanley’s own local council provides a vehicle to improve such co- ordination and the opportunity for‘real’people to hold those who serve their local area to account through their democratically elected representatives. This document demonstrates that the Council is strongly committed to community engagement in order to ensure that local peoples’priorities are translated into tangible action in their neighbourhoods.
