25 YEARS OF FICVALDIVIA In 1994, when the Cine Club of the Universidad Austral de Chile organized the first Valdivia Film & Video Festival, this initiative –which is already 25 years old!– began to take shape as a meeting place for the industry, local and foreigner authors, and an increasingly diverse audience. In this quarter-century, FICValdivia has been an active stakeholder in the many transformations of the Chilean film industry. Its avant-garde sensibilities and reflexive attitude towards social changes have turned it into a fundamental platform for the development of local cinema. Nowadays, in the face of changes felt by all film festivals, we need to ask ourselves about the role and importance of this type of space. A crucial aspect for FICValdivia is to make sense to the community that harbors it, and to continue consolidating itself as a venue that, without neglecting the industry or the quality of its cultural proposal, is capable of challenging audiences, of turning its attention to the social fabric that sustains cinema as a phenomenon, and of developing a form of growth and consolidation linked to our living environment. The Festival’s prospects over time will depend on the support it manages to harness. Consequently, long-term funding is an overriding goal so that the impact on audiences throughout these 25 years of history can be of benefit to the country. Despite the difficulties, there is the certainty that in the next 25 years FICValdivia will continue to be one of the main events of its kind in Latin America: a fundamental showcase for global film trends, and the central meeting point of Chilean cinema, the future of which will continue to be written in and from Valdivia. 25 years after its inception and with its sights set on the next quarter-century, the Valdivia International Film Festival is already a classic of the present and continues to embody all that it means to be a true classic of the future. 5 Palabras 09 Words CEREMONIAS Ceremonias 25 CEREMONIES Ceremonies FILMS DE Films de Apertura 28 INAUGURACIÓN & Opening Films CLAUSURA Films de Clausura 30 OPENING & CLOSING FILMS Closing Films P. 33 Selección Oficial 36 EN COMPETENCIA Largometraje Internacional Official International IN COMPETITION Feature Selection P. 49 Selección Oficial 51 Largometraje Chileno Official Chilean Feature Selection Selección Oficial Largometraje 57 Juvenil Internacional Official International Youth Feature Selection Selección Oficial 65 Cortometraje Latinoamericano Official Latin American Short Film Selection Selección Oficial Cortometraje 80 Infantil Latinoamericano Official Latin American Children’s Short Film Selection Selección Oficial Cine Chileno del 87 Futuro Official Future Chilean Cinema Selection CINEASTAS Bertrand Mandico 100 INVITADOS Jeannette Muñoz 106 GUEST Malena Szlam 110 FILMMAKERS P. 99 6 MUESTRA 25 AÑOS / 25 FILMS 119 MUESTRA ESPECIAL 227 PARALELA CHILENOS FACIUNI 25 YEARS / 25 CHILEAN FILMS FACIUNI SPECIAL PROGRAM PARALLEL PROGRAM HOMENAJES 142 234 TRIBUTES FUNCIÓN ESPECIAL P. 118 Ana Mendieta 143 CINE CHILENO SPECIAL CHILEAN FILM Pioneras Latinoamericanas 148 SCREENING Women Film Pioneers Albert Lamorisse 153 MUESTRA 236 El Kung Fu de los Shaw Bros. 158 RETROSPECTIVA Kung Fu and the Shaw Bros. [25] FICVALDIVIA 11 WORDS Consuelo Valdés Chadwick Minister of Culture, Arts, and Heritage It has been 25 years since, in 1994, the Cine Club of the Universidad Austral de Chile organized the first Valdivia Film & Video Festival, later renamed the Valdivia International Film Festival, in 1998. It has been a quarter-century of efforts and enthusiasm to give continuity and brilliance to an event that has become one of the most important throughout Latin America. The Valdivia International Film Festival proves that in Chile good ideas can prosper and be sustained over time. What started as the initiative of a group of moviegoers is today an event of great significance that has influenced generations of creators and spectators. One cannot forget some of the winning films of this festival over the years and their sizeable cultural contributions: Tesis, Machuca, La Nana, Amores perros and many other instant classics of contemporary cinema. With public and private contributions, and the tenacity of its producers, the Festival has connected Valdivia to the world, giving this beautiful city a unique presence associated with contemporary film. This is what true decentralization looks like; practical, based on concrete facts, which should also serve as a source of inspiration for how to build a Chile of all and for all. Because of all this, and much more that would have to be said to do justice to this wonderful initiative, we celebrate the first quarter century of FICValdivia, and we foresee a brilliant future development made possible by Valdivians’ deep love for cinema.

  • 1 the Human Cost of US Interventions in Iraq
The Human Cost of U.S. Interventions in Iraq: A History From the 1960s Through the Post-9/11 Wars Zainab Saleh1 October 13, 2020 The United States government has justified decades of intervention in Iraq in a variety of ways, the most recent of which is the current “war on terrorism.” All of these interventions have had devastating costs and consequences for Iraqis. Since the 1960s, the U.S. has treated Iraq as essential to its own economic and geopolitical interests; Iraqi arms purchases have bolstered the American military-industrial complex and stable access to Middle East oil has secured U.S. dominance in the global economy. As the U.S. has pursued these interests in Iraq, U.S. interventions have reshaped the Iraqi social, political, and cultural landscape. While the role the United States has played in Iraq since the 1960s is beginning to receive some scholarly attention, it remains widely unknown to the American public. Iraqis have lived in the shadow of U.S. interventions for decades, whereby the United States has attempted to control events and resources in the Gulf region. In 1958, the fall of the Iraqi monarchy brought an end to British influence in Iraq and the emergence of the United States as a major player in Iraqi affairs. In 1963, under the pretext of protecting the region from a communist threat, the Central Intelligence Agency backed the Ba‘th coup, an Arab nationalist party, after Iraq nationalized most of its oil fields. During the 1980s, the United States supported Saddam Hussein’s regime and prolonged the Iran-Iraq War in order to safeguard its national interests in the region, which entailed weakening Iran after the Islamic Revolution in 1979 to prevent it from posing a threat to U.S.

  • Memory, Trauma, and Citizenship: Arab Iraqi Women
MEMORY, TRAUMA, AND CITIZENSHIP: ARAB IRAQI WOMEN by Sajedeh Zahraei A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Social Work University of Toronto © Copyright by Sajedeh Zahraei 2014 Memory, Trauma, and Citizenship: Arab Iraqi Women Sajedeh Zahraei Doctor of Philosophy Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work University of Toronto 2014 Abstract This dissertation examines Arab Iraqi refugee women’s experiences of the “war on terror” from a gendered historical perspective within the contemporary structural violence of state policies and practices in the Canadian context. Drawing on critical anti-racist and anti- colonial feminist theoretical frameworks, I argue that Iraqi refugee women experience the “war on terror” as both a historical and contemporary phenomenon. Historical ideological constructions of Arab Muslim women as terrorists, unsuitable for integration into Canadian society, facilitate their current social exclusion and eviction from civil society. Examining the trauma of the “war on terror” and Iraqi women’s everyday experiences in this light shifts the focus away from disease focused psychiatric conceptualizations of trauma while centering the participants’ experiences and varied responses to their circumstances in the Canadian context. Using a historically-based multi-level trauma framework of the “war on terror” enables us to move away from artificial binaries of “us” and “them” and facilitate a better understanding of the structural dynamics of our interconnected world in order to foster alliances across transnational borders and boundaries aimed at developing multi-level transformative interventions. ii Dedication This work is dedicated to the memory of my beloved mother, Saleemeh Salman Mohammed Al- Imrani (1926-2008), who continues to be a source of love and inspiration long after she is gone.

Reducing these costs requires understanding why individuals choose to resist the transition to democracy, yet current research in the field does not address the issues of a previously nonviolent population turning to terrorism to resist transition to democracy.

HOMELAND: IRAQ YEAR ZERO A film by Abbas Fahdel RIDM, Winner Grand Prize, People’s Choice Award Nyon Visions du Reel, Winner Grand Prize Locarno, Winner Doc Alliance Selection Award Yamagata, Winner Prize of Excellent Citizens’ Prize New York Film Festival, Official Selection 2015 / France/Iraq / 334 min. / Color / In Arabic with English subtitles Press materials: www.kinolorber.com Distributor Contact: Kino Lorber 333 W. 39th Street New York, NY 10018 (212) 629-6880 Rodrigo Brandao, [email protected] Synopsis In February 2002 - about a year before the U.S. invasion - Iraqi filmmaker Abbas Fahdel traveled home from France to capture everyday life as his country prepared for war. He concentrated on family and friends, including his 12-year-old nephew, Haider, as they went about their daily lives, which had come to include planning for shortages of food, water and power. No strangers to war, the Iraqis thought they understood what was coming, and could even manage to be grimly humorous about what they felt would likely be a major and lengthy inconvenience. And then, the war began. When Fahdel resumed filming in 2003, two weeks after the invasion, daily activities have come to a near standstill, the city is overrun with foreign soldiers, and many areas of Baghdad had been closed off to ordinary citizens. Iraqis endure, seemingly as unwitting as Americans themselves about what further tragedy awaits. Fahdel's epic yet intimate film paints a compelling portrait of people struggling to survive while their civilization, dating back to ancient times, is destroyed around them. Interview with the director, Abbas Fahdel reprinted from the Montreal Gazette Abbas Fahdel’s Homeland: Iraq Year Zero is a two-part, 5 1/2-hour documentary about the country before and after the U.S.

IRAQI DIASPORIC IDENTITY ACROSS GENERATIONS, STRUGGLE, AND WAR A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Arab Studies By Marwa Wael Alkhairo, B.A. Washington, D.C. December 3, 2008 Copyright 2008 by Marwa Wael Alkhairo All Rights Reserved ii IRAQI DIASPORIC IDENTITY ACROSS GENERATIONS, STRUGGLE, AND WAR Marwa Wael Alkhairo, B.A. Thesis Advisor: Rochelle A. Davis, PhD ABSTRACT Now more than ever, Iraqi sectarian and ethnic identities have assumed larger roles in Iraq’s political conflict due to a sectarianism discourse and sectarian infighting. Since before the 2003 Iraq war, many US policymakers and the media have sustained this discourse by presupposing that communal identities reign supreme in Iraq, and that there is therefore no societal cohesion as Iraqi national sentiment and identity do not exist. This simplistic postulation is inadequate and can lead to disastrous proposals- leaving a nuanced and multi-layered understanding to be pursued. This thesis examines Iraqi diasporic identity-formation by analyzing 77 extensive interviews with members of the Iraqi diasporic community residing in the Washington DC-Metropolitan area. It traces the interviewees' self-narratives from their time in Iraq until today; and examines if and how their identity-formations have been affected since leaving Iraq and more specifically after the 2003 Iraq war. Through nostalgic memories, many Iraqis have frozen their past to cope with the perplexing present, and project the frozen past to the future as a refuge for their identity.

  • Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} the Book of Disappearances & the Book of Tractations by Raul Ruiz
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} The Book of Disappearances & the Book of Tractations by Raúl Ruiz Raúl Ruiz (director) The son of a ship's captain and a schoolteacher in southern Chile, Raúl Ruiz abandoned his university studies in theology and law to write 100 plays with the support of a Rockefeller Foundation grant. He went on to learn his craft working in Chilean and Mexican television [2] and studying at film school in Argentina (1964). Back in Chile, he made his feature debut Three Sad Tigers (1968), sharing the Golden Leopard at the 1969 Locarno Film Festival. According to Ruiz in a 1991 interview, Three Sad Tigers "is a film without a story, it is the reverse of a story. Somebody kills somebody. All the elements of a story are there but they are used like a landscape, and the landscape is used like story." [3] He was something of an outsider among the politically oriented Chilean filmmakers of his generation such as Miguel Littín and Patricio Guzmán, his work being far more ironic, surrealistic and experimental. In 1973, shortly after the military coup d'état led by the dictator Augusto Pinochet, Ruiz and his wife (fellow director Valeria Sarmiento) fled Chile and settled in Paris, France. [4] Ruiz soon developed a reputation among European critics and cinephiles as an avant-garde film magician, writing and directing a remarkable number of amusingly eccentric though highly literary and complex low-to-no-budget films in the 1970s and 1980s (often for France's Institut national de l'audiovisuel and then for Portuguese producer Paulo Branco).
