  • Effect of Toe Type on Static Balance in Ballet Dancers
Article Effect of Toe Type on Static Balance in Ballet Dancers Momoko Kizawa, MD; Toshito Yasuda, MD, PhD; Hiroaki Shima, MD, PhD; Katsunori Mori, MD; Seiya Tsujinaka, MD; and Masashi Neo, MD, PhD OBJECTIVES: Some forefoot shapes are ideal for pointe Most ballet movements require two specific relevé posi- work in ballet. Egyptian-type, with the hallux being tions of the feet, i.e., demi-pointe and en-pointe. In both posi- longest and the remaining toes decreasing in size, and tions, dancers are required to stand on their forefeet. The Greek-type, with the second toe longer than the hallux, metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints of the first to fifth toes are considered less optimal for pointe work. Square-type, with the second toe the same length as the hallux, is con- are extended for demi-pointe (Fig. 1a) and minimally flexed sidered optimal. This study compared postural stability in for en-pointe (Fig. 1b). In demi-pointe, positioning of the feet the bipedal stance, demi pointe, and en pointe between on the metatarsals and phalanxes raises the center of grav- ballet dancers with the two toe types using a stabilome- ity and displaces the weight of the body forward on the METHODS: ter. This study included 25 Japanese ballet transversal arch,[3,4] so that the body weight rests on the academy dancers who had received ballet lessons for at [5] least 6 years. Toes were categorized into Egyptian-type metatarsals and toes. (n=14) and square-type (n=11). Bipedal stance, demi During en-pointe, dancers wear pointe shoes.

  • The Platform Shoe History and Post WWII
The Platform Shoe – History and Post WWII By Martha Rucker Cave drawings from more than 15,000 years ago show humans with animal skins or furs wrapped around their feet. Shoes, in some form or another, have been around for a very long time. The evolution of foot coverings, from the sandal to present-day athletic shoe continues. Platform shoes (also known as Disco Boots) are shoes, boots, or sandals with thick soles at least four inches in height, often made of cork, plastic, rubber, or wood. Wooden-soled platform shoes are technically also known as clogs. They have been worn in various cultures since ancient times for fashion or for added height After their use in Ancient Greece for raising the height of important characters in the Greek theatre and their similar use by high-born prostitutes or courtesans in Venice in the 16th Century, platform shoes are thought to have been worn in Europe in the 18th century to avoid the muck of urban streets. Of the same practical origins are the Japanese geta, a form of traditional Japanese footwear that resembles both clogs and flip-flops There may also be a connection to the buskins of Ancient Rome, which frequently had very thick soles to give added height to the wearer. During the Qing Dynasty, aristocrat Manchu women wore a form of platform shoe similar to 16th century Venetian chopine, a type of women's platform shoe that was popular in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries which were used to protect the shoes and dress from mud and street soil.

  • Enter the Shoe Design in the Making
Enter the Shoe Design in the Making Anna-Brigitte Schlittler Fashion’s decree of skirts of daring brevity has brought the foot into new and striking prominence. It cannot hide nor shirk.1 From the 1920s onwards, the fashion shoe moved from the fringes to take centre stage in the European and North American shoe industry. For Bally, this development triggered a long pro- cess of adjustment. As we shall see, the period under exami- nation (1930–1950) witnessed some controversial debates and radical steps. The focus of this chapter is the so-called Création department, in which Bally invested heavily. Who were the people behind the emergence of this new specialism?2 What did the profession of shoe design involve? How did the designers work? What knowledge did they bring to the job and what new knowledge did they generate? With whom did they collabo- rate? How important was fashion in the years immediately be- fore, during, and after the Second World War? Sources The study draws on four collections of material: • The Design Archive, today housed in what was once the packing and dispatch area, with several tens of thousands of objects: women’s, men’s, and children’s shoes, lasts, heels, and trimmings of all descriptions, as well as a number of “non-Bally” shoes from France, Italy, and Switzerland.3 • The two in-house magazines, Mitteilungen der BallySchuh- fabriken Aktiengesellschaft4 (issued by the holding com- pany) and Arola Hauszeitung (issued by Bally’s sales divi- sion). The 1930s saw the beginning of a huge rise in internal corporate communication.

  • The Separate Effects of Shoe Mass and Cushioning on the Energetic Cost of Running
The separate effects of shoe mass and cushioning on the energetic cost of barefoot vs. shod running By Corbyn Marie Wierzbinski IPHY Departmental Honors Thesis University of Colorado at Boulder Defended On March 14th, 2011 Thesis Advisor: Professor Rodger Kram Committee Members: Professor Rodger Kram Dept. of Integrative Physiology, University of Colorado at Boulder Professor David Sherwood Dept. of Integrative Physiology, University of Colorado at Boulder Professor Herbert Covert Dept. of Anthropology, University of Colorado at Boulder Abstract One might intuit that running barefoot would exact a lower energetic cost than running in shoes since shoes add mass to the foot. Although this is true for typical weight running shoes, lightweight cushioned shoes and barefoot have been shown to have similar costs. Other studies have indicated that there is an energetic cost of cushioning in running. Thus, the cost of barefoot running may reflect the combined effects of a decrease due to lower mass and an increase due to greater muscle actions for cushioning. We hypothesized that running barefoot on a cushioned surface would minimize both the mass cost and the cushioning cost. PURPOSE: To quantify the separate effects of shoe mass and cushioning on the energetic cost of running. METHODS: 12 male experienced barefoot runners ran at 3.35 m/s with a mid-foot strike pattern. Subjects ran both barefoot and in ultra-light cushioned racing shoes (~150 g /shoe) on a treadmill with a rigid deck and barefoot on the same treadmill equipped with a cushioned belt made with foam slats. In additional trials, small lead weights were added to the feet/shoes (~150, ~300, ~450 g).
