THE NON-JURORS, I688-x805 205 THE NON-JURORS, 1688-1805 By ALBERT MITCHELL. On the 7th February, 1688-9, the Convention Parliament recognized William and Mary as Sovereigns of England, in the place of James II, who, having left the realm on the previous 23rd December, had been declared by the Convention Parliament to be deemed to have abdicated the throne. While there was widespread feeling that government by King James had become impossible, there had been no complete agreement as to the course to be followed : the desires of many went no further than a Regency by William, preserving the title of James: but the more influential majority felt that such a middle course would but defer the trouble : and called for a change in the settlement of the Crown. A very simple new oath of allegiance was required in place of the older form : but nevertheless a distinct issue arose in the Church of England. There were those who felt, or expressed, no difficulty in giving a new allegiance to the new Sovereigns de facto, accepting the legal fiction that the desertion of the realm by the king de jure had vacated the throne. But a minority regarded the oath of allegiance already given, in more stringent terms, to James as of a personal nature that could be determined only by his death. The Archbishop of York and nine other bishops took the former course. The Archbishop of Canterbury and eight other bishops took the latter course. Of these, three died before the time limited by Act of Parlia ment expired : but the senior primate and five bishops were by the Act first suspended and then deprived. -

Randall Beard, Professor of Economics Abstract The Glorious Revolution of 1688, which pushed James II from the throne of England, was not glorious for everyone; in fact, for many, it was a great disaster. Those who had already taken an oath of allegiance to James II and “to his heirs and lawful successors” now pondered how they could take a second oath to William and Mary. Those who initially refused to swear the oath were called Nonjurors. In 1691, Archbishop Sancroft, eight bishops, and four hundred clergy of the Church of England, as well as a substantial number of scholars at Oxford and Cambridge, were deprived, removed from their offices and their license to practice removed, for their refusal. This nonjuring community over time adopted hybridized ideas, long-embraced and called out by the times and circumstances. Five paradigms shaped the English Nonjurors’ mental universe: a radical obedience, a Cyprianist mentality, using printing presses in place of the pulpits they had lost, a hybridized view of time, and a global ecumenical perspective that linked them to the Orthodox East. These patterns operated synergistically to create an effective tool for the Nonjurors’ survival and success in their mission. -

This examination then serves to move discussion of the Eucharist away from the idea of a “moment of consecration” toward a model-based approach focusing on the pneumatological and eschatological aspects of the sacrament. ii Introduction This study begins with an observation about the eucharistic rite in the Episcopal Church in the United States. The current Book of Common Prayer (1979) includes two different “rites” for the celebration of the Eucharist. Rite One preserves the type of language used in previous Prayer Books while Rite Two, along with other significant changes, presents the liturgy in a more updated idiom. In addition, the latter rite includes four new eucharistic prayers largely based on more classical forms from the earlier centuries of the church. One of the major differences between the Rite One and Rite Two prayers is found in the epiclesis, the invocation. -

The surnames in volumes first and second are re-produced in a careful analysis of the whole work. Additional surnames, admitted in conformity with the plan of volume third, are incorporated in the Analysis, and the Alphabetical Tables refer to the pages in volume third. The original work has thus been zealously supplemented, annotated, and corrected, so that the possessors of volumes first and second have in this Index-Volume all the advantages of a new and improved edition, without the disadvantage of their former purchase becoming reduced in pecuniary value. -

Jake Griesel May 2019 ii Jake Griesel Peterhouse, Cambridge John Edwards of Cambridge (1637-1716): A reassessment of his position within the later Stuart Church of England Abstract This study focuses on John Edwards of Cambridge (1637-1716) and the broader Reformed tradition within the later Stuart Church of England. Its central thesis is that, contrary to the claims of older scholarship, Edwards was not a marginalized figure in the Church of England on account of his ‘Calvinism’. Instead, this study demonstrates that Edwards was recognized in his own day and in the immediately following generations as one of the preeminent conforming divines of the period, and that his theological and polemical works, despite some Arminian opposition, enjoyed a very positive reception among significant segments of the established Church’s clergy, many of whom shared his Reformed doctrinal convictions. -

LEIGHTON The Nonjurors and the Counter Enlightenment: Some Illustration The article argues, firstly, that in view of the relationship between Protestantism and the English Enlightenment it is in distinctively non-Protestant religious thought, within or without the Church of England, that the central themes of the English Counter Enlightenment are to be sought. The writings of the Nonjurors can and should therefore be seen as possessing a wider significance than that derived from the history of theology. They constitute an important part of the Enlightenment/ Counter Enlightenment debates, and this flows naturally from the position they occupy in relation to the Catholic and Reformation traditions. The study exempli- fies this view with reference to the writers of the Usager movement. There is, in the second part, a statement of the fundamental theological causes of the Usager schism. The third part displays the significance of these concerns to the Enlightenment/ Counter Enlightenment debates and in particular to the central matter of these debates — the epistemological and institutional location of authority. I Discussions of the Nonjurors of late seventeenth- and early eighteenth- century Britain have habitually found a context in that complex history of the various parties, which, since the sixteenth century, have struggled to have their own definitions of the nature of the Church of England elevated to the status of orthodoxy. It is, however, noteworthy that, in the case of a later party claiming descent from the Nonjurors — that led by John Henry Newman — its profound rejection of certain patterns of characteristically modern thought stemming from the Enlightenment, rather than its relationships to other Anglican factions, has been viewed as its chief claim to continuing atten- tion. -

Abstract of Ph.D. thesis, The Life and Times of Isaac Basire, by Colin Brennen. The aim of this thesis is to reconstruct the life and times of Isaac Basire, mainly from his letters and papers preserved in the Library of Durham Cathedral, and to show the issues which dominated his life, the wider issues in which he was involved. First, it examines Basire's contribution to the transformation of the Church of England between 1630 and 1660, in the development of an Anglican mythology which sought to establish the Ecclesia Anglicana as part of the historic Catholic Church. Second, it considers Basire's fascination, as an Anglican, with the Greek Orthodox Church, a fascinatibn which has its place in the long tradition of the Anglican interest in Orthodoxy. And third, it follows the process of the restoration of the Church through Basire's activi- ties in the North as Archdeacon of Northumberland, and to show the important part played by archdeacons in the restoration of the Church. Isaac Basire was born in France in 1607, and studied at Leiden University where his teachers seem to have influenced him towards the Arminian wings of the Dutch and English Churches. He came to England and was ordained in 1629 by Thomas Morton, Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, who, on his translation to Durham in 1632, took Basire with him as his domestic chaplain, and later appointed him to two livings in the diocese, and, finally, in 1644, to the Archdeaconry of Northumberland. In 1647, however, because of his devotion to King and Church, Parliament forced him into exile.
