It is the most economically developed and industrialized city, generating around 1/4 of the country's GDP and of its industrial production, while only accounting for 9% of the country's population. Bucharest serves as headquarters for 186,000 firms, including nearly all large Romanian companies, with an unemployment rate of 1.8%, which is significantly lower than the national 4.6% rate.
