Μαρία: Γεια σου Ηρώ με λένε Μαρία. Ηρώ: Χάρηκα πολύ. Μαρία: Και εγώ. Γεια σου means, literally, "Your health," but translates as "Hello." To make the greeting more GREEKPOD101.COM BAS I C BOOTCAMP #1 - S ELF I NTRODUCTI ON/BAS I C GREETI NGS 4 friendly and informal, you can just say Γεια! Με is a modification of the pronoun εγώ (we won't go into pronoun grammar at this point), and it means "me" in Greek, but sometimes it is translated as "I". For Example: 1. Με λένε Μαρία. Me léne María. "I'm (called) Maria." (literally "They call me Maria.") 2. Με βγάλανε φωτογραφία. Me vgálane fotografía. "They took a picture of me." (literally "They took me a picture.") We can translate και εγώ (or κι εγώ) as "me too" or "I am too". Here, it would be the shorter version of και εγώ χάρηκα (roughly "nice to meet you too"). Just remember that this is a response to "Nice to meet you." Another example with και εγώ would be: 1. Είμαι κουρασμένη. Íme kurasméni. "I'm tired." 2. Κι εγώ. Ki egó. "Me too." Ηρώ: Γεια σου. Με λένε Ηρώ. Είμαι Ελληνίδα. Μαρία: Γεια σου, με λένε Μαρία. Είμαι Αγγλίδα. We start with a self-introduction ("Hello, my name is Iro"). Then we say our nationality, Είμαι Ελληνίδα. The point that needs special attention here is gender. The phrase "I'm Greek" sounds different for women and men. Let's take a look at the examples with both genders, feminine and masculine: Fem inine G reek Romanization "English" Είμαι Ελληνίδα. Eímai Ellinída. "I'm Greek." Είμαι Ρωσίδα. Eímai Rosída. "I'm Russian." Είναι Αμερικανίδα. Eínai Amerikanída. "She's American." Είναι Αγγλίδα. Eínai Anglída. "She is British." Είσαι Γιαπωνέζα; Eísai Giaponéza? "Are you Japanese?" Είσαι Κινέζα; Eísai Kinéza? "Are you Chinese?" Η κοπέλα μου είναι Γαλλίδα. I kopéla moy eínai Gallída. "My girlfriend is French." Η κοπέλα μου είναι Ιταλίδα. I kopéla moy eínai Italída. "My girlfriend is Italian." Masculine G reek Romanization "English" Είμαι Έλληνας. Eímai Éllinas. "I'm Greek." GREEKPOD101.COM BAS I C BOOTCAMP #2 - BAS I C GREEK S ENTENCE S TRUCTURE 4 Είμαι Ρώσος. Eímai Rósos. "I'm Russian." Είναι Αμερικανός. Eínai Amerikanós. "He's American." Είναι Άγγλος. Eínai Ánglos. "He's British." Είσαι Ιάπωνας; Eísai Iáponas? "Are you Japanese?" Είσαι Κινέζος; Eísai Kinézos? "Are you Chinese?" Tο αγορι μου είναι Γάλλος. To agóri moy eínai Gállos. "My boyfriend is French." Tο αγόρι μου είναι Ιταλός. To agóri moy eínai Italós. "My boyfriend is Italian." Another important point is that unlike English, we cannot use Έλληνας ("Greek") as an adverb; therefore, we can never use it in a phrase such as "I speak Greek." For Example: 1. Ελληνικά Elliniká "Greek" (language) 2. Ελληνική κουζίνα Ellinikí koyzína "Greek cuisine" GREEKPOD101.COM BAS I C BOOTCAMP #2 - BAS I C GREEK S ENTENCE S TRUCTURE 5 LESSON NOTES Basic Bootcamp #3 Useful Phrases for Learning Greek CONTENTS 2 Greek 2 Romanization 2 English 3 Vocabulary 3 Sample Sentences 5 Grammar # 3 COPYRIGHT © 2016 INNOVATIVE LANGUAGE LEARNING.
