March 2016 • Vol 14 No 1 A Grand Grand Opening! By Sherrill Kushner n January 23, nearly 250 visitors Otoured the rehabilitated shotgun house during the Grand Opening celebration of the Conservancy’s Preservation Resource Center. In the course of the day, they learned about Santa Monica’s history as well as how to successfully adapt a historic building for a new use. City Council members Ted Winterer and Kevin McKeown spoke about the roles of the community and the City of Santa Monica in saving and finding a permanent place for the shotgun house. Both cut the ribbon to symbolically open the house to the public. Reverend Janet McKeithan of the Church in Ocean Park, whose congregation was integral to saving the structure, gave the dedication and spoke proudly of the “twin threads that run through Santa Monicans: advocacy and community service.” President Carol Lemlein Mayor Pro-Tem Ted Winterer cuts the red ribbon assisted by former Mayor Kevin McKeown, as State GRAND OPENING continues on page 5 Senator Ben Allen looks on.
