Orchids: 2017 Global Ex situ Collections Assessment Botanic gardens collectively maintain one-third of Earth's plant diversity. Through their conservation, education, horticulture, and research activities, botanic gardens inspire millions of people each year about the importance of plants. Ophrys apifera (Bernard DuPon) Angraecum conchoglossum With one in five species facing extinction due to threats such (Scott Zona) as habitat loss, climate change, and invasive species, botanic garden ex situ collections serve a central purpose in preventing the loss of species and essential genetic diversity. To support the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, botanic gardens create integrated conservation programs that utilize diverse partners and innovative techniques. As genetically diverse collections are developed, our collective global safety net against plant extinction is strengthened. Orchids The diversity, stunning flowers, seductiveness, size, and ability to hybridize are all traits which make orchids extremely valuable Orchids (Orchidaceae) make up one of the largest plant families to collectors, florists, and horticulturists around the world. on Earth, comprising over 25,000 species and around 8% of all Over-collection of wild plants is a major cause of species flowering plants (Koopowitz, 2001). Orchids naturally occur on decline in the wild. Orchids are also very sensitive to nearly all continents and ecosystems on Earth, with high environmental changes, and increasing habitat loss and diversity found in tropical and subtropical regions. -

Subject: Mr B. Lay from the Department of Agriculture will speak on "Re-establishing Native Vegetation". There will also be the usual features of trading table library and raffle, as well as the plant commentary. Visitors are welcome. LAST MEETING National and international photographic award winner, Allwyn Clements, gave us a marvellous talk, demonstration and slide show last meeting. Firstly, what equipment to use: his camera bag was like the magicians hat yielding all sorts of lenses, tubes, bellows, tripods and anything that could be of assistance to take that perfect shot. He then proceeded to show us slides: how they should be taken and one or two just to show how to avoid mistakes. It became obvious fairly quickly that one does not need the most expensive equipment to produce results, a 35 mm single lens reflex camera with a standard 50 mm lens, a set of extension tubes, cable shutter release, flash- gun and most essential a sturdy tripod is all one needs for good slides or photographs. -
Plant of the Week – Rhizanthella Slateri
One of the World’s Rarest Orchids Rhizanthella slateri The Eastern Australian Underground Orchid The genus Rhizanthella are extremely unusual orchids, only found in Australia. They spend all their lives underground, only emerging when they flower. Even then, the flowers are usually hidden by soil or leaf litter. Consequently, they are very hard to find, are all critically endangered, and are often listed in the top 10 rarest orchids in the world. There are currently five species known. Rhizanthella gardneri and R. johnstonii are found in the south-west of Western Australia, where they occur under Broombush (Melaleuca sp.). The underground orchids from eastern Australia are even rarer; so rare that they often don’t even make it onto lists of rare orchids! Rhizanthella omissa is known from a single collection in south-eastern Queensland; and a newly described species, R. speciosa, is known from a single location in Barrington Tops National Park. Note the lack of chlorophyll and the yellow pollinia within the individual flowers The final species, Rhizanthella slateri, is known from a small number of plants at a handful of locations: near Buladelah; in the Watagan Mountains; in the Blue Mountains; and near Nowra. So that makes it even more remarkable that in 2020, a new population of R. slateri was found within five kilometers of the Macquarie Campus. The new population, consisting of 14 plants, was found in local bushland by Vanessa McPherson and Michael Gillings while they were surveying for club and coral fungi. -

Waterloo Urban and Industrial Expansion Flora and Fauna Survey
Shire of Dardanup Waterloo Urban and Industrial Expansion Flora and Fauna Survey March 2015 Executive summary This report is subject to, and must be read in conjunction with, the limitations set out in Section 1.4 and the assumptions and qualifications contained throughout the Report. The Greater Bunbury Strategy and Structure Plan identified a potential significant urban expansion area located to the east of the Eaton locality and an industrial expansion area in Waterloo, in the Shire of Dardanup. The Shire of Dardanup (the Shire) and the Department of Planning have commenced preparation of District Structure Plans (DSP) for the urban expansion area and the industrial expansion area. The DSP will be informed by several technical studies including flora and fauna surveys. The Shire has commissioned GHD Pty Ltd (GHD) to undertake a flora and fauna survey and reporting for the Project. The Project Area is situated in the locality of Waterloo in the Shire of Dardanup. The Project Area includes the urban development area to the north of the South- west Highway (SWH) and the industrial development area to the south of the SWH. GHD undertook a desktop assessment of the Project Area and a flora and fauna field assessment with the first phase conducted from 13 to 14 August, 2014 and the second phase conducted from 29 to 31 October 2014. The purpose of this assessment was to identify the parts of the Project Area that have high, moderate and low ecological values so that the Shire can develop the DSP in consideration of these ecological values. This assessment identified the biological features of the Project Area and the key results are as follows.
