Ha dirigit diversos projectes d’excavació en jaciments del país: Empúries, Vilauba (Camós), Ermedàs (Cornellà del Terri), La Quintana (Cervià de Ter), La Font del Vilar (Avinyonet de Puigventós), Can Ventura de l’Oller (Santa Perpètua de Mogoda), Can Ring (Besalú). Ha publicat les monografies d’aquestes excavacions a banda d’altres títols, entre els que destaca Industria y artesanado cerámico de época romana en el nordeste de Catalunya -Época augústea y altoimperial- (Oxford, 2000). Ha publicat, a més, nombrosos articles en revistes especialitzades. Ambdós autors dirigeixen i elaboren la col·lecció Epigrafia Medieval dels Comptats Gironins, que consta ja de tres volums: Peralada, Empúries i Besalú. El quart volum, dedicat íntegrament a la catedral de Girona es publicarà a finals de l’any 2020. 1 Criteris d’edició. Presentem una edició paleogràfica del text de Carbonell. És per això que, volgudament, oferim el text despullat d'anotacions bibliogràfiques. Tanmateix, oferim a continuació de cada epígraf les correspondències epigràfiques i les equivalències amb el CIL i altres reculls epigràfics. Aquest recull es pot dividir en quatres grans apartats. En primer lloc les inscripcions antigues (que anomenem Pars prima), en segon lloc, la transcripció dels textos d'algunes monedes romanes (Pars altera), en tercer lloc hem volgut editar també una sèrie d'epígrafs moderns (Pars tertia), contemporanis de Carbonell o fets per ell mateix amb clara vocació epigràfica. En un quart apartat (Pars quarta), donem la transcripció de la llegenda de les monedes que copia l’autor i els dos llistats d’abreviatures que Carbonell ha intercalat en el manuscrit. Carbonell presenta les inscripcions seguides i sense numerar, mentre que nosaltres les hem numerat per ordre d’aparició de forma correlativa. En ocasions l'autor proposa títols, que conservem, i als quals afegim una separació nostra en capítols. Totes les intervencions dels editors, ja siguin notes marginals de l'autor o referències nostres al CIL, les hem anotat entre parèntesis angulars, tal com hem fet amb la numeració original dels folis. Per als textos llatins deixem en minúscula i cursiva els textos explicatius de Carbonell (nom de ciutat, procedència, etc.), mentre que transcrivim en majúscules el text de les inscripcions, com és habitual en les edicions epigràfiques, encara que el manuscrit original de vegades estigui escrit en minúscules, ja que Carbonell n’alterna l’ús sense cap criteri coherent. Mantenim la distribució de línies de Carbonell, que, en principi, correspon a l’original que transcriu. També mantenim el punt que l'autor utilitza per marcar una interpunció en la làpida. Pel que fa a les notes marginals de la mà de Carbonell, molt abundants al llarg del manuscrit, transcrivim entre claudàtors i amb els mots add. marg. només aquelles notes que aporten informació complementària, molt especialment la referida al desenvolupament de les abreviatures que proposa Carbonell. Per a la localtizació de les inscripcions i la seva equivalència amb el CIL hem utilitzat el catàleg digital on-line Epigraphik-Datenbank a càrrec de Clauss / Slaby (http://www.manfredclauss.de/index.html). Quan no hem trobat la correspondència ho fem constar amb l’expressió “El CIL no la recull”. En ocasions, quan ha estat possible, remetem a altres corpora epigràfics que sí les recullen. En poques ocasions els textos que transcriu Carbonell no són epigràfics sinó literaris, en aquest cas oferim alguna referència bibliogràfica de suport. 2 Estructura i agrupació de les inscripcions Pars prima: Epigrammata lapidea antiquiora (el títol genèric és nostre). La primera part de què consta aquesta edició recull, com hem dit, les inscripcions antigues. Comença al foli 15 i s'allarga, tot i que amb de forma discontínua, fins al f. 146. De fet, sembla que Carbonell no es plantegi l'obra com un sol recull epigràfic, sinó com a diversos opuscles independents i, per tant, és més coherent parlar d'agrupacion epigràfiques. Les agrupacions d'aquesta primera part són aquestes (els titols són de l'autor i la numeració, nostra): 1. Epigrammata in lapidibus sive marmoribus sculpta tam Romae et Barcinonae quam Tarracone quam etiam in Hispania accipe Francisce, fili charissime (f. 15-38v). 2. Gentilium epigramma Tarraconae ex fractis lapidibus regestata atque sumpta per Petrum Michaelem Carbonellum Barcinonium regni archivarium (f. 49v.-50). 3. Accipe epigrammata marmoribus ac lapidibus Tarraconis sculpta et scire te velim quod hoc in codice non modo quiritum sed etiam aliorum civium veterum monumenta ex Hispaniarum marmoribus eruta per Petrum Michaelem Carbonellem, Barcinonensem regiumqve archivarium comperies (f. 68-73v). 4. Epigramma sequentia in sepulchris marmoribus sculpta extracta fuerunt ut sequitur et sunt antiquissima (f. 86-98v). 5. Epigrammata marmoribus sepulchris aliisquorum locis ut sequentis sculpta et sunt antiquissima ac emendantissimma, quibus omnimo da fides est adhibenda tam orthographia quam etiam in toto eorum tenore (f. 117-141). 6. Excerpta Barcinone in Hispania intra vetus oppidum ex pervetustissimis marmoribus. Hieronymo Paulo iurisconsulto et me Petro Michaele Carbonello, publico Barcinone Tabellione, inspectantibus (f. 142r-u). 7. Anno a Nativitate Domino Mº CCCCº LXXIXº ego Petrus Michael Carbonellus scriba et archivarius dominis regis cepi continuare omnia epigrammata que ab urbe Roma ad me mittit doctissimus ille vir Hieronymus Paulus, L. D. R. D. cardinalis vicecancellarii familiaris ac domini mei Pape abbreviatoris (f. 143-146). Analitzant amb més detall els grups anteriors, tenim el següent esquema: I, 1. (f. 15-38v.). Inscripcions 1-200. Recull dedicat al seu fill Francesc, inscripcions de Hispània i Itàlia. Les cinc primeres són molt inconexes: dues de Barcino, una del Pont d’Alcántara, una de Tarraco i una inscripció literària no recollida al CIL (núm. 4). De la 6 a la 43, pertanyen a la Bètica (Malaca, Urso, Astigi, Corduba…). La 44 i 45 són de la Hispania Citerior (Asso, Ebussus). La 46 i 47 no són recollides al CIL: la de l’edicte que prohibia travesssar el Riu Rubicó amb tropes, i la dels Trofeus de Pompeu. De la 48 a la 58 són totes italianes (Roma, Patavium…) excepte una falsa hispànica,(núm. 53). La núm. 55 és l’epitafi de l’historiador Titus Livi. 3 De la 59 a la 83, en el canvi de foli (f. 25v), sense cap indicació, comença una sèrie dedicada a la Hispània Citerior, amb especial presència de Saguntum, Dianium i Malaca. 84-96: Algunes italianes i 7 inscripcions de Grècia (89-96). 97-121: Italianes força barrejades, Patavium, Ravenna, Tibur, Ancona, Roma, i una de Dalmàcia (núm. 100). 122-196: una llarga sèrie amb la presència destacada de Mediolanum (Milà), amb algunes intercalades de Roma, Como, Ravenna, Ancona… 197-200: Al f. 38u. quatre inscripcions de la Citerior. I, 2. (f. 49v.-50). Inscripcions 201-208. Són 8 Làpides trencades procedents de Tàrraco. I, 3. (f. 68-73v). Inscripcions 209-257. Una llarga sèrie dedicada a la Hispània Citerior, amb especial presència de Tarraco. Carbonell inclou en aquesta sèrie les transcripcions dels textos de 21 monedes que nosaltres hem editat de forma independent a la Pars altera. Tanca la sèrie, sense cap conexió amb les anteriors, l’edicte de prohibició d’entrar a Itàlia amb tropes més enllà del riu Rubicó. L’editem com a inscricpció núm. 257. I, 4. (f. 86-98v). Inscripcions 258-314. Una sèrie dedicada a Itàlia, Roma i Milà, especialment, amb alguna "intrusa" intercalada com una d’Atenes (núm. 269). I, 5. (f. 117-141). Inscripcions 316-582. Sens dubte la sèrie més llarga, amb gairebé 300 epígrafs. Gairebé totes són inscripicons italianes. Dins d'aquest grup tan nombrós, es pot fer una subdivisió, no indicada per Carbonell de cap manera, que dóna aquesta seqüència: 316-429: Inscripcions de Roma amb una desena d'intercalades d’altres ciutats. 430-565: Agrupades de forma general, però no sistemàtica, per provincies i ciutats: Etruria (Volterra, Pisa, Toscanello); Transpadana (Novara, Angera, Mòdena, Como, Lodi); Venetia et Histria (Brescia). A banda d’altres províncies i ciutats amb molt poca presència, crida l’atencio una falsa hispana (núm. 540). I, 6. (f. 142r-v). Inscripcions 585-589. Són cinc inscripcions de Barcino i una de Tarraco, proporcionades per Jeroni Pau. I, 7.

COOLEY AND BENET SALWAY IGENERAL I.i General Introduction The aim of this quinquennial survey remains the same as its predecessor, as for the most part does the format, though the team is regrettably reduced by one.1 With an eye to the study of the Roman world, we hope to signal the most important newly published inscriptions, signicant reinterpretations of previously published material, new trends in scholarship, recent studies that draw heavily on epigraphic sources, and noteworthy developments in the various aids to understanding inscriptions (both traditional printed material and electronic resources). In the context of this journal, the geographical range and chronological scope reect the contours and history of the Roman state from its beginnings down to the end of the seventh century. As such, not only does the survey naturally take in Greek as well as Latin texts, but also epigraphic material in other languages relevant to the Roman world.

A place is defined as a given section of the environment to which humans have assigned appropriate feelings and behaviors. Using the Roman civic feast as a test case, this paper applies the model of placemaking proposed by Amos Rapoport to the built environment of Ancient Rome with the civic feast as a test case. I look to epigraphic, literary, visual, and archaeological evidence for the set of appropriate behaviors assigned to places of civic feasting (“Feasting Places”). This investigation involves laying out the theoretical framework, the physical circumstances of the Feasting Place, behaviors of Romans within it, and evidence for Romans distinguishing Feasting Places from other places. Pigman III HUMANITIES WORKING PAPER 55 December 1980 Abstract for Barzizza's Studies of Cicero Before Barzizza's claim to be the father of Ciceronianism can be fruitfully discussed we must know more about his own work with Cicero. This paper offers a first contribution to such a reexamination by calling attention to three little known works: 1) his commentary on figures of speech and thought from the Ad Herennium, 2) his 1420 lectures on the speeches, 3) his biography of Cicero. The paper also prunes Barzizza's bibliography of several commentaries which he is recently supposed to have written and which under analysis prove to be ghosts. The main part of the paper discusses the life of Cicero (which is here edited for the first time), in particular its relation to its sources. Barzizza's Studies of Cicero Even in his own day Barzizza was known for his work with Cicero, espcially for his part in disseminating the Lodi manuscript of the rhetorical works. In a famous letter which captures the enthusiam of that discovery and remains an impressive tribute to Barzizza even when one remembers that the writer is requesting a favor and thus wishes to make his correspondent "benevolentem" Guarino says: Gratulati sumus et laudi et sapientiae tuae quem ab diis manibus vel verius Elysiis campis renascens ad superos Cicero primum in terris delegit hospitem; quod re quoque ipsa augurari licuerat. Quem enim potius quam te Cicero ipse deligeret, cuius ductu atque auspiciis amatur legitur et per Italorum gymnasia summa cum gloria volitat?l Another extravagant commendation of Barzizza's service and devotion to Cicero appears in the inaugural lecture which Antonio da Rho delivered in Milan after assuming the chair of rhetoric which Barzizza occupied towards the end of his life.
