CLASS OF 2016 Prom

On Friday, May 13th, Lowell Catholic’s senior class attended the annual Prom at the Merrimack Valley Country Club. The evening’s festivities kicked off in the Keith Gymnasium with the Grand March, which allows parents and classmates the opportunity to see all of the attendees dressed up and ready to dance.

On May 25th, the 27th graduating class of Lowell Catholic along with faculty, staff, administrators and parents gathered at the UMass Inn and Conference Center for a buffet dinner in celebration of their individual and club achievements. Each member of the class received a special class gift and many accepted cords to be worn at graduation in recognition of their many accomplishments at LC. The blessing before dinner was presented by senior Walter McKenna. Acting as Master of Cer- emonies was Assistant Principal of Academic Affairs, Les Mur- ray. Mr. Murray refl ected on the unique qualities of this mem- orable class.

Senior Parade Lowell Catholic senior Emma Gosselin celebrates as seniors kicked off the week leading up to their com- mencement with a parade encircling the neighbor- hood. Decorating cars has been an LC senior week tradition since 1992. Emma was joined by Sadie Scott and Makayla Violett. Also during senior week, seniors enjoyed a day at Six Flags New England and spent a day of refl ection, reading “love letters” from faculty, staff and family and watching a slideshow full of memories from their high school years. 4 4 Introducing BOARD MEMBERJohn Rafferty

Teacher Mary Ann Scheiner Retires From LC MARY ANN SCHEINER chose a career in teaching because she was always interested in exciting kids about the natural world around them. As a young girl, she found herself teaching science to the children for whom she babysat. Mrs. Scheiner found that teaching was truly a calling for her. She taught at a small Catholic school for 14 years and then public school for one. She reports that from her fi rst day at LC, she knew that the school was a nurturing and accepting place with staff that shared her dedication to children. What she enjoyed most about teaching in a Catholic school was being able to integrate faith into the classroom and teaching her students that there is a place for God in science. As Mrs. Scheiner retires, she offers the incoming freshmen these words of wisdom for success in life, “Do what you’re supposed to do.” Her presence will be greatly missed on campus and we wish her an enjoyable and fulfi lling retirement. 7 CO-CURRICULAR LIFE

LC PLAYERS Under the direction of Mr. George Kalivas, Lowell Catholic’s LC Players presented the musical, “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.” The show ran for three days, April 29th, 30th and May 1st, with a full house each time. Hunter Berube ’17 of Dracut, starred in the lead role as Charlie Brown in his debut performance with the LC Players. Hunter was amazed to see how many LC students came out to see the musical. “I was really blown away by how much support we got from our classmates.” Part of LC’s varied fi ne arts program, the LC Players perform twice a year.

The honor of playing Jesus is entrusted annually to a senior who embraces his faith fully and is deeply respected by his peers. This year, the honor went to Jerome Seglah of Lowell, for his outstanding commitment to community SPIRITUAL LIFE SPIRITUAL service, his participation in the Senior Leadership In- stitute, his dedication to the Lowell Catholic Schools Collaborative, and his humble personality.

According to Head of School Maryellen DeMarco, the tradition at Lowell Catholic has continued for more than a decade. “What moves me the most is the way the Stations are not only presented within a historic timeline, but how the students relate the struggles Jesus endured to the trials and tribulations in their own lives. It teaches the students to have respect and reverence for each other as they make the living con- nection that we all carry our own cross.”

Theology Instructor Matthew Portu added, “The live action truly helps the kids to break down and under- stand the process of the Passion and refl ect upon the entire week in the life of Christ.”

SENIOR RETREAT The Class of 2016 visited Cathedral Camp on retreat in East Freetown, MA in February. The retreat fo- cused on the topic of transitions. Students refl ected upon their journey in life up to this point, discussing who they are now and who they hope to be in the future. Breaking into small groups, listening to faculty responses and focusing on fi nishing their senior year successfully brought this already tight knit group even closer.

APRIL SERVICE TRIP This past April, LC juniors and seniors visited various agencies in the Greater Boston area donating their time and labor. Pictured to the left, students take a break from helping out at Cradles to Crayons in Brighton to pose for a colorful photo. Their week long service trip also included getting their hands dirty at Stonehill College’s farm planting potatoes. When they are ready to harvest, they will be donated to shelters such as Fr. Bill’s and MainSpring, where the students also lent a helping hand. Among the many other char- ities, the students also assisted in the operations of Catholic Charities - South, the Saint Vincent De Paul Society and School on Wheels, an organization that provides tutoring and education to children with fami- lies in homeless shelters and overfl ow hotels.
