2019 Chair: Martin Sorbille Major: Spanish My doctoral thesis examines the contemporary portrayal of Bolivian indigenous women, known as cholas. Bolivian cholas are Aymara or Quechua women who wear a distinctive outfit and can be easily identified by them. They are mainly rural peasants that have migrated to the urban areas and work as house-workers or market vendors. Historically they have been marginalized, but their social condition has changed significantly in the last decade due mostly to governmental policies. The twentieth-century literature represents the chola in two distinct forms. Popular theater presents her positively and affirms her identity; whereas the novel discredits her as a mother and wife, and ultimately as a woman. These opposing positions lead to a questioning of the depiction of
