Galbo, CCR, RPR, RMR - - - [email protected] 8 1 THE NARRATOR: More than 20 years ago 2 the New Jersey Department of Environmental 3 Protection, NJDEP, awarded Green Acres funding to 4 Braddock Park and the 43rd Street Park. An 5 application for a major disposal or diversion of 6 parkland is necessary now because the placement of 7 the North Bergen Pre- K Program Temporary Classroom 8 Units, T C Us, at Braddock Park in 2001 and the EMS 9 South Building at 1814 43rd Street in 1999 should 10 have approved by the NJDEP prior to use. This public 11 scoping hearing is just one of the steps for final 12 approval as shown in the chart on the right. 13 ( Spanish translation. ) 14 THE NARRATOR: Frequently Asked 15 Questions About Diversion. 16 Why permanent diversion now? 17 For more than a decade, Hudson County, 18 North Bergen Township, and the North Bergen Board of 19 Education have made extensive efforts to find an 20 alternate location for North Bergen' s Pre- K Program, 21 to remove it from Braddock Park, and comply with both 22 New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and 23 New Jersey Department of Education regulations 24 without success. NJDEP regulations permit permanent 25 diversions in limited circumstances like this one. Celeste A. Galbo, CCR, RPR, RMR - - - [email protected] 9 1 Approval would provide a fair and reasonable 2 resolution that will make lawful the use of the 3 Braddock Park site and the 43rd Street EMS South 4 Building. 5 Should more property be diverted at 6 Braddock Park? 7 Some public comments suggest a greater 8 area of the Braddock Park site should be permanently 9 diverted as part of this application, such as the 10 access driveway and parking lot next to the pre- K 11 trailers.

The proposed service reduction was released in a report by the Port Authority between the Christmas and New Year’s holiday, with claims it would save $10 million annually. However, nearly 390,000 riders would be impacted annually by the loss of service from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. on weeknights, primarily working-class residents who ride the PATH to get to their place of employment. The service reduction would also affect hundreds of thousands more if weekend overnight service were also eliminated, a suggestion included in the report. There were also two prominent party switchers: freshman Rep. Jeff Van Drew became a Republican, and State Sen. Dawn Addiego is now a Democrat. In the year of the unlikely voter, just 27% of New Jersey voters cast their ballots in 2019 – a number that was up 5% over 2015 thanks to the state’s new vote-by-mail law that caused the participation of many New Jerseyans who would never have voted if ballots didn’t show up at their homes. A 5% increase was significant. Off-off year elections like 2019 when State Assembly candidates head the ticket happens twice every other decade, so New Jersey won’t see another one until 2035. The race for Democratic State Chairman ended in a draw – John Currie keeps the job for eighteen months, when LeRoy Jones takes over. Legislative reapportionment, which was the entire reason for the state chairman battle, gives an edge to the anti-Murphy faction – if that’s where Jones is when the new districts are drawn. Murphy continues to struggle to win the approval of New Jersey voters, yet he appears – at least right now – to have a lock on the Democratic nomination when he seeks re-election in 2021.

    Advocating for Students with Exceptional Needs in Public Education By: Cassandra Fenton Project Description When creating this project, my goal was to combine my knowledge and experiences from my major in political science and my participation in the teacher certification program. To that end, this project is a political activism campaign that seeks to empower those in the education field, specially advocates for students with exceptional needs, to exercise their political voice. I have too often felt the sentiment of disenfranchisement by those are not actively involved in politics. In order to address this negative perception of politics and government, my project strives to inform professionals in the education field of their ability and right to exercise their political voice. Those in the field are the most equipped to advise policy surrounding special education, and this expertise can be of great use for politicians. The primary component of my project are two issue letters that can be sent to representatives to advocate for the rights of students with exceptional needs. The first letter tackles the issue of lack of adequate funding for special education by the state. The second letter addresses the general disrespect for the teaching profession as well many of the obstacles teachers must overcome to educate their students effectively. While these letters can be sent as is, they are meant to inspire professionals in the field to share their own expertise with their representatives. I have also included a graph to demonstrate that a vote carries more weight at lower levels of government, for which less people come out to vote, as opposed to the highest offices, which attract the greatest voter turnout.

    5 Existing Conditions The comprehensive project team kicked off the existing conditions assessment by conducting a team site visit on June 24th, 2015. Many subsequent site visits occurred over the course of the project and many more photographs taken. Figure 5-1 below presents only a relative few photographs of the project area. The photographs along the waterfront were mostly taken during the initial site walkthrough in June 2015 while the inland photos were taken at various dates during the entire course of this feasibility study. Table 5-1 below shows the photograph locations and a description of the location. Several more site photographs were compiled into a photo log which is contained in Appendix A. This appendix also contains a table of the locations and a map showing the associated location of the photo and the direction in which the photograph was facing. Table 5-1.
