Coastal storms combining with sea level rise have increased the risk of flooding and storm surge damage in coastal communities. The communities of the City of Hoboken and Jersey City are low-lying areas along the Hudson River waterfront and the Newark Bay/Hackensack River with little or no relief. Flooding in these areas is a result of intense precipitation and runoff, tides and/or storm surges, or a combination of all of them. During Super-storm Sandy these communities experienced severe flooding and flood-related damage as a result of the storm surge. ii Following the damage that was created on these communities by flooding from Sandy, this research was initiated in order to develop comprehensive strategies to make Hoboken and Jersey City more resilient to flooding. Commonly used flood measures like storage, surge barrier, conveyance, diversion, pumping, rainfall interception, etc. are examined, and the research is focused on their different combination to address different levels of flood risk at different scales. -

This shipyard was occupied by the W. & A. Fletcher Company, a national leader in the construction of steamboats and steam engines, between 1890 and 1929. The yard was operated by the Shipbuilding Division of the influential Bethlehem Steel Company as a ship repair facility from 1938 until 1983. Project Information: The owner has proposed the demolition of most of the surviving structures within the former shipyard as part of a planned redevelopment of the property. The reuse of one of these structures (the former machine shop) and the documentation of this structure and four others to be demolished was agreed upon as an appropriate mitigation measure for this planned action. -

It was created by a compact between the two States in 1921 for the development of transportation facilities and the promotion and protection of commerce in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan region. At the top of the organization is the twelve-member Board of Commissioners, appointed by the Governors of New York and New Jersey. There are six members from each state who serve for six-year overlapping terms. The Commissioners serve with-out pay as a public service. They report directly to the Governors of the two States, who have veto power over Commissioners’ actions. A career staff of more than 7,000 employees, headed by the Executive Director, is responsible to the Board of Commissioners. Over the years the Port Authority, at the direction of the States of New York and New Jersey has developed airports, marine terminals, bridges and tunnels, bus terminals, the PATH rapid transit system, the World Trade Center and other facilities of commerce and transportation. All of this has been accomplished without burden to the taxpayers. These undertakings are public projects; all are built with moneys borrowed solely on the Port Authority’s credit. TOWNSHIP OF WEEHAWKEN NEW JERSEY MUNICIPAL BUILDING 400 PARK AVENUE WEEHAWKEN, NEW JERSEY 07086 201-319-6005 Urgent Update September 2, 2021 @ 4PM Hurricane/Tropical Depression Ida Alert Dear Resident, As mentioned in our update earlier today, Hackensack Plank Road is closed in both directions. This closure is due to a partial mudslide & rockslide on the cliff face above Hackensack Plank Road. Township Office of Emergency Management personnel and Township Engineers are on scene with emergency contractors clearing and hauling debris from this location. Once enough debris has been removed, Township Engineers will be able to determine the integrity of the cliff face better and when Hackensack Plank Road can be re-open again, and the area surrounding the cliff face. Reservoir Park in the Highpoint and Hudson Avenues area had a small outer embankment area partially wash away due to heavy rain; THE AREA IS SAFE, AND THERE IS NO DANGER OF COLLAPSE OR FAILURE. In an overabundance of caution and to ensure the situation does not get worse, we have emergency contractors on site today to repair the embankment. At this time, we do not know how long the repairs will take, but they will likely extend beyond today. The Office of Emergency Management, Township Engineers, and our Building Department are monitoring the situation closely; there is no need to be concerned. If your property was damaged during storm Ida last evening, and you have already contacted the Township of Weehawken for assistance (e.g., Police Department, DPW/Sanitation, Building Department, etc.) and are still awaiting a response. -

The relatively few miles of improved road were around towns and cities (a road was “improved” if it was graded). That year, Carl Fisher (developer of Miami Beach and the Indianapolis Speedway, among other things) conceived a trans-continental highway. He called it the “Coast-to-Coast Rock Highway.” It would be finished in time for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition and would run from the exposition’s host city; San Francisco, to New York City. Two auto industry tycoons played major roles in the highway’s development: Frank Seiberling - president of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., and Henry Joy - president of the Packard Motor Car Company. It was Henry Joy who came up with the idea of naming the highway after POTUS Abraham Lincoln. On July 1st 1913, the Lincoln Highway Association was officially incorporated. -

The committee was unified in its praise of the design's abundance of plantings, including deciduous and evergreen trees and understory shrubs; ample open space for seating and event programming; and a sinuous, flowing design for the planting beds and pathway network. MCB4 is aware that Department of Parks and Recreation and Public Design Commission approval is necessary for any change of programming or revisions to the previously approved design. On January 4th, 2017, Manhattan Community Board 4 at its monthly Full Board meeting, with 35 in favor, 0 opposed, and 2 present but not eligible, voted to recommend approval of Tishman/Speyer’s concept design for Block 4. Block 4 of the 6-Block Park Block 4 lies between Manhattan’s West 36th Street and West 37th Street, from Hudson Boulevard West to Hudson Boulevard East (which is between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues), and 1 is part of the Phase Two portion of the Hudson Boulevard Park.
