The Ghost Train *______*

Locomotive 40 is the official locomotive train of Nevada. The train is also known as the “Ghost Train of Old Ely”. The stories about the train have an urban legend quality to them. Locomotive 40 was built in 1910 and used as a passenger engine. This service stopped in July of 1941. After was attacked in December of that year, scrap metal was in high demand. The crew of the train did not want to see the locomotive destroyed. Rumor has it that when officials came to Ely to take possession of the train, they could not locate it. According to legend, the crew hid Locomotive 40 inside a mine. The whistle from the train could be heard throughout the area, but the train was never found.

Pearl Harbor *______*

T he US Naval Fleet, stationed at the US Naval Base in the Hawaiian Islands, was attacked without warning, by the Japanese Navy on Sunday morning, December 7th, 1941. 2,403 Americans were killed, including over 2, 000 naval personnel. A total of eighteen ships were sunk, including the USS and the USS Oklahoma. The Japanese eet had trained for about a year in preparation for the . They used six aircraft carriers, carrying 420 airplanes, and various escort ships to a staging area 230 miles from Pearl Harbor. A US radar unit detected the approach of the planes, but misidentied them as a squadron of US bombers that was expected at the base. The United States was stunned by the attack. The next day, President Franklin Roosevelt, in reference to the surprise attack, described the infamous event as “a date which will live in infamy.” Congress overwhelmingly voted to declare war on Japan. The attack served to unite America against the Axis Empire of Germany, Italy and Japan.

The U .S.S. : Arizo na *______*

The USS Arizona was a Pennsylvania-class . It was built in 1910. In 1918, it served as an escort ship which accompanied President to Paris for a peace conference. In 1941, the Arizona was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and sunk as a result of the Japanese attack on the US Pacific Fleet. A bomb exploded in a powder magazine aboard the Arizona, and the ship sank with over 1,100 officers and sailors onboard. T he sunken ship still rests on the bottom of the harbor. In 1962, a memorial was dedicated to the men who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor.

The Jewish festival commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem is called Hanukkah. (It is also spelled “Chanukah.”) The First Temple, built by King Solomon, had been destroyed by king Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon in 586 BC. In 538 BC, King Cyrus of Persia and Media decreed that the temple in Jerusalem should be rebuilt. This rebuilding was completed in 515 BC. It was enlarged by Herod the Great beginning in 20 BC. Hanukkah is known as “The Festival of Lights.” This year, it will be celebrated on Sunday, December 22 through Monday, December 30.
