• The Unified Heart and the Blessing to End Disunity
A Brief Introduction to The Unified Heart and The Blessing to End Disunity And Other Spiritual Themes in Leonard Cohen’s Songs By David Peloquin “There are halls in the heavens above that open but to the voice of song” from the Zohar As I write this (February 2012), Leonard Cohen’s new masterpiece, Old Ideas , is taking the popular music world by storm. The enormous success of the recent world tour and the release of the Live in London (CD, DVD) and Songs From the Road (CD/DVD) have contributed greatly to this much deserved resurgence and appreciation of Leonard’s work. Songs from the new album Old Ideas will figure strongly in this study. This will be a brief introduction to some of the key spiritual themes in Cohen’s songs, especially The Unified Heart, and guide to a meditative approach to Cohen’s work in general. I believe that it is specifically the spiritual depth of Cohen’s work that has touched the hearts of so many in this troubled world for so many years. This kind of spirituality has little to do with theology or organized religion. It is a spirituality of personal experience, which is the essential element of the traditional mystic path. Leonard Cohen has been engaged in a life-long exploration of the great wisdom traditions, East and West. These include, at least: Indian philosophy, (Vedanta), Yoga, Taoism, Zen Buddhism, Judaism, (including Kabbalah) Christianity, Gnosticism, Sufism and Alchemy. He moves with great freedom and creativity within these traditions. Cohen’s focus has always been on esoteric mystical inner experience rather than exoteric doctrines and beliefs.

  • Popular Music Journalism As Public Sphere
UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING PEDRO NUNES Department of Film and Media POPULAR MUSIC AND THE PUBLIC SPHERE: THE CASE OF PORTUGUESE MUSIC JOURNALISM Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January, 2004 i Abstract Music journalism has been acknowledged as an important space of mediation between artists and consumers. Journalists and critics have played an historical role in the creation of discourse on popular music and are acknowledged by the music industry as an important referent in promotion strategies. Research on the subject has been mostly focused either on the relationship between music journalism and the wider music industry in which it operates or on its status as a field of cultural production. Little consideration has been given to the role played by music journalists in articulating popular music with wider political, social and cultural concerns. This thesis will examine the case-study of Portuguese popular music journalism. It will address its historical evolution and current status by taking into consideration some dimensions, namely, the wider institutional contexts that frame the status of music journalism and how they work upon it, the ideologies and values realised in journalistic discourse, the journalists’ relationship to the music industry (as represented by record labels/companies and concert promotion companies) and issues of interactivity with readers. The thesis will draw on theories of the public sphere and, to a lesser extent, on Bourdieu’s notions of field, capital and habitus to assess the possibilities for music journalism to create reasoned discourse on ii popular music and, therefore, contribute to wider debates on the public sphere of culture.

  • The Window”: Reading Leonard Cohen’S Song Doron B
Speaking Sweetly from “The Window”: Reading Leonard Cohen’s Song Doron B. Cohen To the memory of Amnon Amir My first partner in reading LC Leonard Cohen is famous for two themes that are the mutual foci of his work, from his earliest poems to his most recent songs: love and spirituality. Through Cohen‟s poems, novels and songs readers and listeners have been offered a candid view of both his sexuality and faith. However, his work can not be divided accurately by this dichotomy; first because there are other aspects to it, such as political concerns in the widest sense, and second because it is sometimes difficult to separate between those various concerns, which are often intertwined. It might therefore be difficult to offer an unequivocal interpretation to a Leonard Cohen poem or song, as they can often be interpreted in more than one way, and they also mean different things to different people. In this reading of “The Window”,1 I do not wish to impose an interpretation from outside, according to one common theory or the other, but to try, as far as possible, to work from inside Cohen‟s poetry, from his familiar world of imagery, and while referring to his own words when talking about his work. My aim here is to try to come as near as possible to what Cohen might have had in mind when composing this song. I will also introduce external material of various kinds, but such that must have been familiar to Cohen, and could have had an impact on the song.

Lyon Cohen, Leonard’s paternal grandfather, a well- known businessman and philanthropist, was an important figure in the Jewish community. He started the Freedman Company, one of the largest clothing manufacturers in Montreal, and cofounded the Canadian Jewish Times (1897), the first English- language Jewish newspaper in Canada. Lyon Cohen was also president of several organizations, including the Canadian Jewish Congress and Congregation Shaar Hashomayim. He helped Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire settle in Canada—among them, from Lithuania, the learned Rabbi Solomon Klinitsky- Klein and his family. Lyon’s son, Nathan Cohen, a lieutenant in the Canadian army and World War I veteran, later ran the family business. From his father, the young Leonard inherited a love of suits; from his mother, Masha, who trained as a nurse, he received his charisma and his love of songs. Cohen’s well- to- do family was quite different from the Jewish masses who arrived in Montreal in the early twentieth century. Many of these immigrants spoke Yiddish as their native language and worked in garment factories. Despite his extensive travels and his residence in Los Angeles, Cohen always returned to Montreal to “renew his neurotic affiliations,” as he often repeated in interviews.
