The Unified Heart and the Blessing to End Disunity
A Brief Introduction to The Unified Heart and The Blessing to End Disunity And Other Spiritual Themes in Leonard Cohen’s Songs By David Peloquin “There are halls in the heavens above that open but to the voice of song” from the Zohar As I write this (February 2012), Leonard Cohen’s new masterpiece, Old Ideas , is taking the popular music world by storm. The enormous success of the recent world tour and the release of the Live in London (CD, DVD) and Songs From the Road (CD/DVD) have contributed greatly to this much deserved resurgence and appreciation of Leonard’s work. Songs from the new album Old Ideas will figure strongly in this study. This will be a brief introduction to some of the key spiritual themes in Cohen’s songs, especially The Unified Heart, and guide to a meditative approach to Cohen’s work in general. I believe that it is specifically the spiritual depth of Cohen’s work that has touched the hearts of so many in this troubled world for so many years. This kind of spirituality has little to do with theology or organized religion. It is a spirituality of personal experience, which is the essential element of the traditional mystic path. Leonard Cohen has been engaged in a life-long exploration of the great wisdom traditions, East and West. These include, at least: Indian philosophy, (Vedanta), Yoga, Taoism, Zen Buddhism, Judaism, (including Kabbalah) Christianity, Gnosticism, Sufism and Alchemy. He moves with great freedom and creativity within these traditions. Cohen’s focus has always been on esoteric mystical inner experience rather than exoteric doctrines and beliefs. -

Leonard Cohen, he furthers, is the exception to this rule: a duality between high and low art, a paradox. “The pop star-poet paradox isn’t that Cohen writes poetry and popular music,” he notes, “but rather that his songs count both as poetry and as popular music.” This collection of essays, written by philosophers who share an enthusiasm for Leonard Cohen, analyzes his poetry and songwriting from the perspective of philosophical inquiry. -

Still Waiting for the Miracle
Still Waiting for the Miracle A review of Ira B. Nadel, Various Positions: A Life of Leonard Cohen (1996; 2006) Written for the Leonard Cohen Files by Doron B. Cohen For Tom Sakic, a hundred floors above me In the tower of LC scholarship A truly satisfying biography of Leonard Cohen has not been written yet. Among several unsatisfactory attempts, Ira B. Nadel’s Various Positions: A Life of Leonard Cohen is probably the most successful effort, and most readable account. However, the book is plagued by various frustrating problems that cause it to be considerably less useful, captivating or authoritative than the book it might have been. And, unfortunately, ten years after its first publication it was reissued with only a short new afterword, rather than undergoing the thorough overhaul it required. The book was first published in 1996, by Random House in Canada, and by Pantheon Books in the United States, as well as by Bloomsbury Paperbacks in the UK in 1997. It was reissued, with the new afterword, in 2006 by Vintage in Canada, and in 2007 by University of Texas Press, Austin, in the series “Jewish History, Life and Culture” (in paperback). The book has also been translated into German, French, Polish, Croatian and Japanese – an indication of Cohen’s global appeal, and of the need felt for such a biography. Following a short introduction, Nadel begins his story with a relatively extensive background of Cohen’s family and roots in the Jewish community of Montreal. He goes on to portray Cohen’s first steps as a poet and musician, his student years, his life on Hydra, his drug habits, women, children (very briefly), and his life-long commitment to both his Jewish tradition and the practice of Zen. -
Songs from a Room
Leonard Cohen: Songs From A Room By Harvey Kubernik © 2019 April 7, 2019 marks the 50 th anniversary of Leonard Cohen’s second Columbia Records album, Songs From A Room in 1969. It reached No. 63 on the US Billboard Top LPs and No. 2 on the UK charts. “Initially, Songs From A Room felt like a trespass,” suggested writer Marina Muhlfriedel. “How dare Leonard Cohen dilute the sacred incursion his first album, forged into my being? For some reason, I never considered the possibility of a follow-up. Songs of Leonard Cohen was so personal, so monolithic, I assumed it to be a singular event. “It took a friend planting me on a couch, cranking up the speakers and demanding I listen. Before ‘Bird On the Wire’ was over, tears flowed. It was so damn beautiful — a hymn, a confession, a deep bow of humility striking a nearly unbearable nerve. Leonard seemed a bit older, wearier, less embellished, but once again that trickster sunk right into my soul.” "Leonard wrote songs because he had to, and because he wanted to get laid,” observed author, record producer and deejay Andrew Loog Oldham in a 2014 interview we conducted. “Later he wrote songs because he wanted to get paid. That's when I decided he had something to say.” I was on the UCLA campus in Westwood, California when Cohen debuted in 1970 at Royce Hall. Michelle Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas was one of Leonard’s singers that evening. Mama Cass Elliot had already covered “You Know Who I Am” from Cohen’s Songs From A Room on her 1968 album Dream a Little Dream. -
Leonard Cohen Returns to the Uk in 2013
LEONARD COHEN RETURNS TO THE UK IN 2013 FRIDAY 21 JUNE AT LONDON’S THE O2 The rapturously acclaimed musical legend Leonard Cohen is set to delight audiences as he returns to the UK in 2013 with an exclusive show at London’s The O2 on Friday 21 June. Tickets go on sale at 9am on Friday 14 December through www.aeglive.co.uk. With a career spanning six decades and sell out shows around the world, the writer, poet, troubadour and hugely influential artist continues to prove that the hunger to see him is undiminished. Since returning to the stage in 2008 after a 15-year hiatus, Cohen has lost nothing in his years off the road and his shows have quickly been recognised as musical history. The Guardian – “Seizing his magnificent Hallelujah back from Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright and dozens more, he is possessed by the words, his eyes squeezed tight, his body trembling.” ***** Evening Standard – “On this form, Cohen could still be playing arenas at 80” •••• Sunday Times – “The revelation of this concert wasn’t so much the music, beautifully performed as it was by a lightly amplified band who never put a foot wrong, but the persona of the man himself. Age hasn’t so much mellowed Cohen, as made him much, much funnier.” Daily Express – “Leonard Cohen is special and this concert – all two-and-a-half- hours of it – was unforgettable.” ***** Financial Times – “Leonard Cohen’s powers of seduction are undimmed. Once they gave him the reputation of a ladies’ man. Now, almost 78, he deploys his gallantry for a different purpose – to sweep audiences off their feet” Cohen is arguably the greatest singer songwriter of modern times.
