SPEECH MADE UNABLE: INEXPRESSIBILITY, SUBLIMITY, AND NOTHINGNESS IN KING LEAR AND ITS RECEPTION By JAMES TRYGVE NEWLIN A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2013 1 © 2013 James Trygve Newlin 2 To Trygve Tonnessen, my grandfather 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Appropriately enough for a study attentive to failure and problems of expression, this dissertation is the result of many false starts, detours, and drafts. I am grateful to the many colleagues, family members, and friends whose support and encouragement made completion possible. I owe an enormous debt to my dissertation committee. I thank my chair, Richard Burt, and my readers, R. Allen Shoaf, Terry Harpold, and Eric Kligerman. This project is the result of not only their suggestions, but also their inspiration. I am also grateful to the English department at the University of Florida for offering a supportive intellectual atmosphere, and for providing opportunities to complete and present my work. I was able to complete this project thanks to the funding awarded from the Graduate Student Award fellowship, and was able to present early drafts at conferences thanks to additional travel funds awarded by the department and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I am as grateful for these awards as I was fortunate to receive them. I owe thanks to my many teachers at UF: Sidney L. Dobrin, Robert B. Ray, James J. Paxson, Anastasia Ulanowicz, Phillip E. Wegner, and Roger Beebe. Thanks as well to Pamela K. Gilbert, Kenneth B.

LUIGI DALLAPICCOLA'S IL PRIGIONIERO AND GIAN CARLO MENOTTI'S THE CONSUL: A COMPARATIVE STUDY by JENNIFER GRAHAM STEPHENSON PAUL H. HOUGHTALING, COMMITTEE CHAIR SUSAN CURTIS FLEMING NIKOS A. PAPPAS STEPHEN V. PELES JONATHAN WHITAKER ELIZABETH AVERSA A DOCUMENT Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in the School of Music in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2016 Copyright Jennifer Graham Stephenson 2016 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT As art reflects life, so too does it hold a mirror to the lives of the people who create it. The turbulent events of the first decades of the twentieth century, including two World Wars and the rise of Italian Fascism and German Nazism in the 1920s and 30s, affected millions of lives across several continents. This document explores the ways in which Luigi Dallapiccola (1904– 1973) and Gian Carlo Menotti (1911–2007) voice their reactions to these events in their operas, Il Prigioniero (1948) and The Consul (1950). Italian composer Luigi Dallapiccola spent twenty months in internment during the First World War, and would be forced on several occasions to go into hiding during the Second World War. His opposition to Mussolini and the Italian Fascists, coupled with his quasi–obsession with internment and freedom, led to his composition of three works of “protest music,” of which Il Prigioniero is the second. Il Prigioniero tells the story of a prisoner of the Inquisition, his attempt at escape and eventual capture. Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti emigrated to the United States in 1928, at age seventeen, and spent a great much of his time traveling and working in various countries.

  • Mabou Mines's Lear: a Narrative of Collective Authorship
Mabou Mines's Lear: A Narrative of Collective Authorship Iris Smith Let's begin with a few endorsements. "The name Mabou Mines has become a kind of totem in today's theatre. To their peers, this New York-based company represents a model of avant-garde theatricality—in writing, in acting, in directing, in production, in technology and in collaboration. To mainstream theatregoers and critics, Mabou Mines remains a curiosity, by turns fascinating, puzzling and infuriating. Since its beginning almost 20 years ago, the group has accumulated a powerful, almost magical aura despite the fact that (or very possibly because) it's un- believably difficult to say exactly what Mabou Mines is."1 "Mabou Mines begins its year-long celebration 'Mabou Mines—20 Years7 with the pre- miere of our boldly American production of Shakespeare's masterpiece, set in the South where divine right is replaced by money, sex and racial might."2 "Mabou Mines is an experimental theatre group that specializes in the works of Samuel Beckett and in original pieces called animations. It is also known for its blending of conceptual and traditional performance styles. "Named for a small mining town in Nova Scotia where the company members spent a summer working together, Mabou Mines has had to fight the image of being thought a mime troupe, and at the same time find its identity as a theatre group. "Mabou Mines is a tightknit group whose members (JoAnne Akalaitis, Lee Breuer, Ruth Maleczech, Frederick Neumann, William Raymond, Terry O'Reilly, and David War- rilow) conceive, write, direct, produce, and stage all of its works collectively.

  • In Ricordo Di LUIGI DALLAPICCOLA
