NHESP is responsible for the conservation and protection of hundreds of species that are not hunted, fished, trapped, or commercially harvested in the state. The Program's highest priority is protecting the 176 species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and 259 species of native plants that are officially listed as Endangered, Threatened or of Special Concern in Massachusetts. Endangered species conservation in Massachusetts depends on you! A major source of funding for the protection of rare and endangered species comes from voluntary donations on state income tax forms. Contributions go to the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Fund, which provides a portion of the operating budget for the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program. Systematic Treatment CLUBMOSS FAMILY—LYCOPODIACEAE Mosslike, terrestrial, low-growing, trailing or erect, perennial plants; leaves numerous, evergreen, minute, 1-nerved; sporophylls similar to vegetative leaves, or modified, crowded into a cone at the apex of the aerial stems; sporangia large, in the axils of the sporophylls, uniform, 1-celled; spores all alike, small, globose, light yellow. FOXTAIL CLUBMOSS Lycopodiella alopecuroides (L.) Cranfill [Lycopodium alopecuroides L.] Perennial, 5–50 cm long; stems creeping and mostly arching over vegetation, rooting at tips; leaves 6–8 mm long, linear–awl-shaped, margins ciliate and minutely toothed; fruiting stalks 1–3 per plant, 6–35 cm long; *cone 2–10 cm long, 5–13 mm wide, leafy; sporo- phylls similar to leaves. Wet open sites, low pinelands, ditches, wet prairies, bogs, wet borders. Common. Central peninsula, north and west through the panhandle of Fla. Coastal states, Tex. north into Maine; plus Ark. and Tenn. Summer into fall. SOUTHERN CLUBMOSS or SOUTHERN BOG CLUBMOSS Lycopodiella appressa (Chapm.) Cranfill [Lycopodium appressum (Chapm.) F.E. Sozophytes (Red-Listed Species) in Silesian Anthropogenic Habitats and Their Role in Nature Conservation

Conserv. 3-4: 386-390, 2006 www.brc.amu.edu.pl Sozophytes (red-listed species) in Silesian anthropogenic habitats and their role in nature conservation Arkadiusz Nowak Department of Biosystematics, Division of Systematic Botany and Phytosociology, University of Opole, Oleska 48, 45-052 Opole, Poland, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Floristic research was conducted in anthropogenic habitats in Silesia in 1997-2005 and it focused on occurrence of red-listed taxa in habitats strongly transformed by man. As a result of the study, 362 sozophyte species of various threat categories were found in man-made biotopes. An analysis of frequency classes of occurrence in anthropogenic habitats in relation to the total number of sites of a given species revealed that almost 100 sozophyte taxa have over 66% of their locations in anthropogenic habitats. The study confirmed that anthropogenic habitats can serve as the last refuges for many threatened species, which are extinct in natural or semi-natural habitats. The investigations show that man-made habitats could shift the range limits of threatened species and support their dispersal. Out of the 362 analysed species, 164 were recognised to occur in other than typical plant communities. Man-made habitats create particular environmental conditions for development of spe- cific plant communities, which are not found in natural biotopes in surrounding areas or even not described before. Thus the habitats strongly transformed by man are important for protection of the natural floristic diversity and must not be omitted in strategies of nature conservation. Plants collected in the Azores and Madeira were characterized morphologically. The independence between two endemic species common to Madeira and the Azores Islands – Huperzia suberecta (Lowe) Tardieu and Huperzia dentata (Herter) Holub – is clearly shown. A clear-cut morphological separation between these taxa and Huperzia selago (L.) Exploring Lycopodiaceae Endophytes, Dendrolycopodium
EXPLORING LYCOPODIACEAE ENDOPHYTES, DENDROLYCOPODIUM SYSTEMATICS, AND THE FUTURE OF FERN MODEL SYSTEMS A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School Of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science By Alaina Rousseau Petlewski May 2020 ©2020 Alaina Rousseau Petlewski i ABSTRACT This thesis consists of three chapters addressing disparate topics in seed-free plant biology. Firstly, I begin to describe the endophyte communities of lycophytes by identifying the culturable endophytes of five Lycopodiaceae species. Microbial endophytes are integral factors in plant evolution, ecology, and physiology. However, the endophyte communities of all major groups of land plants have yet to be characterized. Secondly, I begin to re-evaluate the systematics of a historically perplexing genus, Dendrolycopodium (Lycopodiaceae). Lastly, I assess the status of developing fern model systems and discuss possible future directions for this work. ii BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Alaina was born in 1995 near Dallas, TX, but was largely raised in central California. In high school, she developed a love of plants and chemistry. She graduated summa cum laude from Humboldt State University in 2017 with a B.S. in botany and minor in chemistry. After graduating from Cornell, she plans to move back to the West Coast. Recientemente ha sido publicada una nueva propuesta de clasificación de las plantas vasculares sin semilla (PPG1) hasta el rango de género, basada en caracteres morfológicos y filogenias moleculares, siendo consensuada por un gran número de especialistas en pteridología. Tras un año desde su aparición ha sido ampliamente aceptada por la comunidad científica. Esta nueva propuesta de clasificación presenta una serie de importantes cambios respecto a sistemas anteriores, entre ellos el empleado para la Flora Iberica I. Este trabajo plantea una actualización a la propuesta del PPG1 de la clasificación y nomenclatura de los taxones de licófitos y helechos de la flora ibérica. [en] Novelties for the iberian pteridoflora in the context of a new system for the seedless vascular plants Abstract. Recently, a new classification proposal for the seedless vascular plants, until the range of genus (PPG1), has come to light. This system considers both morphological characters and molecular phylogenies, and is based on consensus by a large number of specialists in pteridology. In its first year of life, it is being widely accepted by the scientific community. This taxonomic classification presents a series of novelties with respect to previous systems, including the one used for Flora Iberica. -

Washington Flora Checklist A checklist of the Vascular Plants of Washington State Hosted by the University of Washington Herbarium The Washington Flora Checklist aims to be a complete list of the native and naturalized vascular plants of Washington State, with current classifications, nomenclature and synonymy. The checklist currently contains 3,929 terminal taxa (species, subspecies, and varieties). Taxa included in the checklist: * Native taxa whether extant, extirpated, or extinct. * Exotic taxa that are naturalized, escaped from cultivation, or persisting wild. * Waifs (e.g., ballast plants, escaped crop plants) and other scarcely collected exotics. * Interspecific hybrids that are frequent or self-maintaining. * Some unnamed taxa in the process of being described. Family classifications follow APG IV for angiosperms, PPG I (J. Syst. Evol. 54:563?603. 2016.) for pteridophytes, and Christenhusz et al. (Phytotaxa 19:55?70. 2011.) for gymnosperms, with a few exceptions. Nomenclature and synonymy at the rank of genus and below follows the 2nd Edition of the Flora of the Pacific Northwest except where superceded by new information. Forehand, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate College ABSTRACT Together with the heterosporous lycophytes, the clubmoss family (Lycopodiaceae) is the sister lineage to all other vascular land plants. Given the family’s important position in the land-plant phylogeny, studying the evolutionary history of this group is an important step towards a better understanding of plant evolution. Despite this, little is known about the Lycopodiaceae, and a well-sampled, robust phylogeny of the group is lacking.
