Moreover, This study is part of a wider project in order to understand the main Neogene historical and evolutionary processes involved in the establishment of the present Mediterranean fish fauna. The database used, comprehensive of all the Plio-Pleistocene shark teeth fauna of the Mediterranean area, was compiled from a generic and species revision of historical elasmobranch teeth collections, from a study of the new findings collected the middle Pliocene sections of Rio Merli, Rio dei Ronchi, Rio Cugno and Rio Co di Sasso, and from the lower-middle Pleistocene sections of Fiumefreddo, Grammichele, Archi and Vallone Catrica, as well as from a critical analysis of as many publications as possible figuring and describing Plio-Pleistocene Mediterranean elasmobranch faunas. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of this database provided a general paleoecological and paleobiogeographical pattern of the Mediterranean elasmobranch fauna through the Plio-Pleistocene. A total of 27 species, included into 19 genera, 13 families and 8 orders, have been described. The main systematic results concerned the revision of several teeth, once included in the fossil taxon C. egertoni, from the lower-middle Pliocene of Italy, assigned to the carcharhinid species C. brachyurus, C. falciformis, C. leucas, C. longimanus, C. obscurus, C. perezi, C. plumbeus. Such revision provided the high diversity and disparity of the genus Carcharhinus starting from the lower-middle Pliocene in the Mediterranean, and supported the hypothesis of C. egertoni as a “wasted-basket species”. Moreover, according to the recent diagnosed proposed by Purdy et al. (2001), the shark teeth herein documented and once included in the fossil taxon Isurus hastalis have been assigned to the wide-toothed mako shark Isurus xiphodon. The wide geographic distribution of this fossil taxon during the lower-middle Pliocene (upper Pliocene ?) in the Mediterranean was consistent with the strong presence of marine mammals, mainly pinnipeds and/or small cetaceans, on which I. xiphodon fed. Finally, six large teeth from the Pliocene of Italy have been assigned to the giant-toothed white shark Carcarodon megalodon. This voracious shark was considered extinct between the Upper Miocene-lower Pliocene from the Mediterranean. Therefore, the teeth documented might extend the fossil record of this shark at least during the lower Pliocene into the basin, even if more detailed studies needed to confirm this record. The data provided by the systematic study carried out in this work integrated with those from the critical analysis of the main publications have allowed to recognise a total of 73 elasmobranch species, of which 14 in open nomenclature for the identification at specific level, included in 51 genera, 26 families, and 11 orders. In particular, Carcharhiniformes, representing the 30,6% of the total fauna, was the most diversified shark order of Mediterranean elasmobranch fauna. Moreover, Lamniformes (16,6%), Squaliformes (16,6%) and Myliobatiformes (15,3) provided a relevant part of the elasmobranch fauna diversity. All the other elasmobranch orders, Hexanchiformes (5,5%), Echinorhiniformes (1,4%), Abstract Squatiniformes (4,2%), Pristiophoriformes (2,8%), Orectolobiformes (1,4%), Rajiformes (4,2%), and Torpediniformes (1,4%), were poorly represented and mostly subordinated to these four large groups. From a stratigraphic point of view, the teeth recorded in the lower Pleistocene section of Fiumefreddo assigned to the living Apristurus aff. laurussoni represent the first fossil record for the genus Apristurus, while the teeth assigned to Chlamydoselachus anguineus, from the same lower Pleistocene section, represent the first fossil record for this living species. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the database provided a progressive decrease in diversity and disparity of the elasmobranch fossil record across the Plio-Pleistocene. Moreover, two different evolutionary trend were recognised for the Plio-Pleistocene elasmobranch fauna. A first evolutionary trend involved all those epipelagic and upper mesopelagic groups, such as the family Lamnidae, Odontaspididae or Carcharhinidae, that during all the Plio-Pleistocene were interested by the less faunal changes, mainly related to the progressive disappearance of Miocene relict taxa, such as Isurus xiphodon, Parotodus benedeni or Dipturus olisiponensis, as well as extra-Mediterranean tropical and subtropical species, such as Galeocerdo cuvier, Carcharhinus leucas or C. perezi. This part of the elasmobranch fauna showed, starting from the lower-middle Pliocene, a more or less stability in the faunal composition. By contrast, a second evolutionary trend involved all those upper mesopelagic and/or bathypelagic shark families, such as Centrophoridae or Dalatiidae, as well as many scyliorinid species. These elasmobranch groups provided the most relevant structural changes across all the Plio-Pleistocene, through several periods of diversification and crisis, probably supported by changes in the deep waters hydrographic conditions of the Mediterranean, as well as by major connection with the near Atlantic Ocean. Introduzione CAPITOLO 1 INTRODUZIONE 1.1. Premessa I denti fossili di squalo sono stati da sempre oggetto di notevole interesse per l’uomo, impiegati spesso in passato soprattutto nella medicina popolare, dove, ridotti in polveri e paste o utilizzati come ciondoli, erano considerati importanti strumenti curativi dagli improbabili effetti magico-esoterici. Le “glossopetre”, ovvero lingue di pietra, nome con il quale venivano comunemente indicati tali reperti, erano considerate, come del resto i fossili in generale, delle produzioni inorganiche della terra, che, generate e modellate da forze interne, potevano in alcuni casi assumere forme simili ad animali o a parti di questi. Sebbene Talete, già nel VI secolo A.C., avesse comunque intuito una relazione diretta tra i fossili ed i resti di animali vissuti in epoche passate, fu soltanto nel Seicento che vennero definitivamente abbandonate le antiche credenze popolari sull’origine mistica delle lingue di pietra. Furono in particolare le ricerche condotte dal famoso naturalista napoletano Fabio Colonna, che per primo dimostrò l’origine organica delle “Glossopetre”, gli studi di anatomia comparata eseguiti sui selaci da Nicola Stenone, e soprattutto le importanti intuizioni di Agostino Scilla, che, nella sua opera del 1670 “La vana speculazione ingannata dal tempo”, stabilì per primo una relazione diretta tra le “glossopetre” e gli elasmobranchi, a segnare una nuova rotta negli studi dei resti di elasmobranchi fossili. Con l’inizio del XVIII secolo, infatti, gli ittiodontoliti fossili, da strumenti magico-curativi, divennero sempre più di frequente oggetto di campagne di scavo e di ricerca finalizzate alla costituzione di collezioni rappresentative

Cardabiodon ricki and Cardabiodon venator were large lamniform sharks with a patchy but global distribution in the Cenomanian and Turonian. Their teeth are generally rare and skeletal elements are less common. The centra of Cardabiodon ricki can be distinguished from those of other lamniforms by their unique combination of characteristics: medium length, round articulating outline with a very thick corpus calcareum, a corpus calcareum with a laterally flat rim, robust radial lamellae, thick radial lamellae that occur in low density, concentric lamellae absent, small circular or subovate pores concentrated next to each corpus calcareum, and papillose circular ridges on the surface of the corpus calcareum. The large diameter and robustness of the centra of two examined specimens suggest that Cardabiodon was large, had a rigid vertebral column, and was a fast swimmer. The sectioned corpora calcarea show both individuals deposited 13 bands (assumed to represent annual increments) after the birth ring. The identification of the birth ring is supported in the holotype of Cardabiodon ricki as the back-calculated tooth size at age 0 is nearly equal to the size of the smallest known isolated tooth of this species. The birth ring size (5–6.6 mm radial distance [RD]) overlaps with that of Archaeolamna kopingensis (5.4 mm RD) and the range of variation of Cretoxyrhina mantelli (6–11.6 mm RD) from the Smoky Hill Chalk, Niobrara Formation.

The shark fauna of the Upper Cretaceous Hinoshima Formation (Santonian: 86.3–83.6 Ma) of the manuscriptHimenoura Group (Kamiamakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan) was investigated based on fossil shark teeth found at five localities: Himedo Park, Kugushima, Wadanohana, Higashiura, and Kotorigoe. A detailed geological survey and taxonomic analysis was undertaken, and the habitat, depositional environment, and associated mollusks of each locality were considered in the context of previous studies. Twenty-one species, 15 genera, 11 families, and 6 orders of fossil sharks are recognized from the localities. This assemblage is more diverse than has previously been reported for Japan, and Lamniformes and Hexanchiformes were abundant. Three categories of shark fauna are recognized: a coastal region (Himedo Park; probably a breeding site), the coast to the open sea (Kugushima and Wadanohana), and bottom-dwelling or near-seafloor fauna (Kugushima, Wadanohana, Higashiura, and Kotorigoe).

ABSTRACT Trace fossils are the result of animal behaviors, such as burrowing and feeding, recorded in the rock record. Previous research has been mainly on the systematic description of trace fossils and their paleoenvironmental implications, not how animal behaviors have evolved. This study analyzes behavioral evolution using the quantification of a group of trace fossils, termed graphoglyptids. Graphoglyptids are deep marine trace fossils, typically found preserved as casts on the bottom of turbidite beds. The analytical techniques performed on the graphoglyptids include calculating fractal dimension, branching angles, and tortuosity, among other analyses, for each individual trace fossil and were performed on over 400 trace fossils, ranging from the Cambrian to the modem.

For example, major oceanic currents,such as the North Pacific Gyre, are functionsof the relative positions of continentsand Antarcticgla- ciation,whereas regional air masses,submarine topography, and coastline shape affectlocal processes such as upwelling. I hypothesize that the long-termdevelopment of these abiotic processes has influencedthe relative diversityand communitycomposition of North Pacific seabirds. To explore this hypothesis,I divided the historyof North Pacific seabirds into seven intervalsof time. Using published descriptions,I summarized the tectonicand oceanographic events that occurred during each of these time intervals,and related changes in species diversityto changes in the physical environment.Over the past 95 years,at least 94 species of fossil seabirds have been described from marine deposits of the North Pacific.
