In a more general way, however, I will be taking the reader over the same ground I had covered in my previous volumes, even if I shall be doing so by traveling along different paths. There are two different reasons why this is believed to be necessary. First of all, I wish to keep my readers up to date with new discoveries in the hard sciences, many of which continue to bolster the diverse suppositions I have been presenting these many years. Secondly, I feel obliged to clarify certain issues which have been raised by others and to resolve certain objections that have been leveled at my work since the publication of my first three volumes. One major objection that has been leveled at the prequels to this work is that, despite the evidence we presented from the hard sciences, the scenario we have so far constructed is real­ ly based on nothing but mythology. It is not that we have made a secret of this and, in fact, we stressed it at the very beginning of our discourse.1 In no way have I evaded the ambiguous, sometimes even contradictory, content of mythology. Nor will I do so, since mythology is an­ ything but an open book. As Max Miiller, one of the most influential mythologists of the nine­ teenth century, admitted, "everybody who has ever thought or written on mythology has freely admitted that mythology requires an explanation."2 It thus seems that, once again, it is neces­ sary to point out what it was that led to the formulation of the world's mythological themes, which is not itself a question that has been satisfactorily answered by mythologists. As we had formerly pointed out,3 mythological texts can contain so many convoluted themes that my­ thologists often despair of making sense out of any of them. "What," for instance, asked Paul Veyne, "is to be made of this mass of nonsense?"4 "How can all this [he went on] have a meaning, a motivation, a function, or at least a structure? The question of whether myths have an authentic content can never be put in positive terms."5 1 D.

Grim Introduction: The Emerging Alliance of World Religions and Ecology HIS ISSUE OF DÆDALUS brings together for the first time diverse perspectives from the world’s religious traditions T regarding attitudes toward nature with reflections from the fields of science, public policy, and ethics. The scholars of religion in this volume identify symbolic, scriptural, and ethical dimensions within particular religions in their relations with the natural world. They examine these dimensions both historically and in response to contemporary environmental problems. Our Dædalus planning conference in October of 1999 fo- cused on climate change as a planetary environmental con- cern.1 As Bill McKibben alerted us more than a decade ago, global warming may well be signaling “the end of nature” as we have come to know it.2 It may prove to be one of our most challenging issues in the century ahead, certainly one that will need the involvement of the world’s religions in addressing its causes and alleviating its symptoms. The State of the World 2000 report cites climate change (along with population) as the critical challenge of the new century. It notes that in solving this problem, “all of society’s institutions—from organized re- ligion to corporations—have a role to play.”3 That religions have a role to play along with other institutions and academic disciplines is also the premise of this issue of Dædalus. The call for the involvement of religion begins with the lead essays by a scientist, a policy expert, and an ethicist.

How much I want to hear!" from [Discourse] of Hermes Trismegistus : Poimandres Hermeticism "The fifteen tractates of the Corpus Hermeticum, along with the Perfect Sermon or Asclepius, are the foundation documents of the Hermetic tradition. Written by unknown authors in Egypt sometime before the end of the third century C.E., they were part of a once substantial literature attributed to the mythic figure of Hermes Trismegistus, a Hellenistic fusion of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth. This literature came out of the same religious and philosophical ferment that produced Neoplatonism, Christianity, and the diverse collection of teachings usually lumped together under the label "Gnosticism": a ferment which had its roots in the impact of Platonic thought on the older traditions of the Hellenized East. There are obvious connections and common themes linking each of these traditions, although each had its own answer to the major questions of the time." Quotations from the Hermetic literature in the Church Fathers (who were never shy of leaning on pagan sources to prove a point) accepted a traditional chronology which dated "Hermes Trismegistus," as a historical figure, to the time of Moses. As a result, the Hermetic tractates' borrowings from Jewish scripture and Platonic philosophy were seen, in the Renaissance, as evidence that the Corpus Hermeticum had anticipated and influenced both.

    1 The destruction of art Solvent form examines art and destruction—through objects that have been destroyed (lost in fires, floods, vandalism, or, similarly, those that actively court or represent this destruction, such as Christian Marclay’s Guitar Drag or Chris Burden’s Samson), but also as an undoing process within art that the object challenges through form itself. In this manner, events such as the Momart warehouse fire in 2004 (in which large hold- ings of Young British Artists (YBA) and significant collections of art were destroyed en masse through arson), as well as the events surrounding art thief Stéphane Breitwieser (whose mother destroyed the art he had stolen upon his arrest—putting it down a garbage disposal or dumping it in a nearby canal) are critical events in this book, as they reveal something about art itself. Likewise, it is through these moments of destruction that we might distinguish a solvency within art and discover an operation in which something is made visible at a time when art’s metaphorical undo- ing emerges as oddly literal. Against this overlay, a tendency is mapped whereby individuals attempt to conceptually gather these destroyed or lost objects, to somehow recoup them in their absence. This might be observed through recent projects, such as Jonathan Jones’s Museum of Lost Art, the Tate Modern’s Gallery of Lost Art, or Henri Lefebvre’s text The Missing Pieces; along with exhibitions that position art as destruction, such as Damage Control at the Hirschhorn Museum or Under Destruction by the Swiss Institute in New York.
