5. CULTURE AND TOURISM

Icons of Wrocław

Wrocław is one of the oldest cities in Poland, fourth biggest at present, offering a variety of great ways to spend time. However, there are a number of venues we believe stand out and strongly recommend you see. Don't leave the city without visiting the icons of Wrocław.

The Cathedral Island

The oldest part of Wrocław, Cathedral Island is surrounded by the waters of the Odra River. A former stronghold, Ostrów Tumski, is full of history and inspiring architectural monuments. Its gothic buildings overlook the city giving a sense of its rich history. The Island is the oldest part of the city, although it has been the foundation of the contemporary city.

24

Market Square

Whether for business, tourism, shopping or a splendid meal, the Market Square is a vibrant centre of city life that offers something for everyone. Set among charming, colorful buildings, the historic centre of the city is a must see in Wrocław. During the day the Market Square is crowded with tourists and office workers, but at night it becomes the most vibrant entertainment hotspot in the city. Full of colorful restaurants, clubs and cafes the Market Square barely goes to sleep at all.

The Quarter of Four Denominations

25

The Quarter of Four Denominations, also known as the Four Temples Neighborhood or the Site of Mutual Respect is a unique place where Catholics, Protestants, Jews and Orthodox Christians coexist and cooperate smoothly. It was an inspiration to create a "four temples cultural path." Actions connected with the idea of cultural trail are aimed at restoration of cultural values historically cultivated in this quarter and at showing the present day Wrocław multiculturalism and openness.

Panorama Racławicka

Panorama Racławicka was painted at the end of the 19th century to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Kościuszko Uprising on the initiative of Jan Styka. The painters were Wojciech Kossak, Jan Styka, Zygmunt Rozwadowski, Teodor Axentowicz and Włodzimierz Tetmajer. Between 1894 and 1944 the Panorama was exhibited in a rotunda built especially for this purpose in Lviv. In 1944 it was rolled up and hidden in Bernardine Convent in Lviv. In 1946 it was transported from the USSR to Wrocław. After its arrival in Poland, Polish authorities decided not to exhibit the complete panorama, only occasionally revealing parts of the work. However, in the 1960s the rotunda in Wrocław was built and in the 1980s it was decided that the complete panorama would be exhibited.
