19 Das magisch anziehende Dreieck: Naturheilbewegung, Vegetarismus, Lebensreform Was verstand man im 19. Jahrhundert unter »Naturheilung«? Unter »Naturheilung« verstand man eine holistisch-vitalistische Gesundheitslehre von der Überwindung aller Krankheiten durch die dem Menschen innewohnende »Lebenskraft«. Die Naturheiler wollten die im Verwissenschaftlichungsprozess des 19. Jahrhunderts beiseite gedrängte humoralpathologische Harmonielehre und Di- ätetik mit ihren Naturheilverfahren als Gesamtlebensphilosophie wieder aufwerten. Lediglich Pflanzen, Pflanzenteile und Pflanzen- produkte in roher, frischer oder getrockneter Form oder natürliche Mineralien waren als Heilmittel bei den Anwendungen erlaubt. Ihre von der Antike übernommene, ganzheitliche Krankheitsvorstellung umfasste die Therapie des Leibes und der Seele. Deshalb fanden sich in zahlreichen naturheilkundlichen Gesundheitsführern auch Diät- vorschläge für ein besseres seelisches Wohlbefinden.1 Gesundheit wurde als Harmoniezustand von Körper, Geist und Seele aufgefasst, während Krankheit Disharmonie als Ergebnis einer »unnatürlichen« Lebensweise bedeutete. Eine naturgemäße Ernährungsweise bildete dabei den Kern- aspekt. Darunter wurde meist eine vegetarische Diät aus Obst, Knol- 20 Entwicklungsstränge der modernen Diätkost len-, Wurzel-, Blattgemüse, Samen, Nüssen und frischem Wasser verstanden. The Example of Maximilian Bircher-Benner (1867-1939) ELISABETH MEYER-RENSCHHAUSEN and ALBERT WIRZ* Having virtually disappeared from the canons of medicine during the early modern period, dietetics returned in the early nineteenth century as part of a new nutritional physiology tied to scientific "animal production" and, generally, to a new, market-oriented agriculture. This medical advocacy of meat-eating ran up against a counter-movement of a simultaneously developing "alternative" dietetics, as we might call it today, which advocated "natural" vegetarian eating habits as a new path to health. When, around the turn of the century, the Swiss nutritionist and physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner emerged as a charismatic leader of a new, gentle healing and life-style movement on the strength of his raw-food diet therapies, he did so against the background of a natural- healing and life-reform movement that was at that time already some seventy years old. It was an era when industrially-processed flour, sugar, and spirits, as well as the increasing consumption of meat, were beginning to characterize modern society's eating habits. Industrialization, by creating the technical possibilities for moving previously unheard-of quantities of wheat from large-scale farming areas to huge cities, for the first time gave rise to bread-baking on an industrial scale around 1820. For that purpose, flour had to be made capable of being stored. This was achieved by milling off the vitamin and protein-rich germ and aleuron layer, with the consequence that the resulting white bread was much less nutritious than the old corn porridges and coarse-grain breads had been.1 The increasing cheapness of spirits was the result of new distilling processes which took hold after about 1830, and it brought on a new "alcohol plague". -

Des liens entre naturisme et végétalisme : de la communauté végétalienne du Monte Verita à l’influence du naturisme et végétarisme allemand en France Bernard Andrieu1 Guillaume Robin2 « Je vivais nu et éveillé, tel un cerf dans son bocage de rocaille. » Hermann Hesse Tiré de Dans les rochers - Notes d’un homme de la nature Ainsi se promenait Hermann Hesse, nu dans les bois, de hutte en hutte, alternant des périodes de jeûne et une alimentation à base de légumes crus et de fruits lorsqu’il se rendit pour la première fois en 1907 dans le Tessin pour rejoindre la colonie du Monte Verita près d’Ascona, en Suisse, afin d’y effectuer une cure de quatre semaines dans le but de guérir sa dépression et son alcoolisme. Un an après, il publia un essai intitulé Dans les rochers - Notes d’un homme de la nature3 où il retranscrit avec distance sa vie au milieu de la communauté végétarienne du Monte Verita. Il y expérimenta le confort spartiate des huttes d’air et de lumière et le mode de vie alternatif et ascétique de la colonie basée notamment sur les principes du végétalisme4. Hesse raconte : Quelques années, le Docteur Knölge avait fait venir le printemps et le début de l’été dans l’une des nombreuses auberges végétariennes sympathiques du lac Majeur. Il avait rencontré beaucoup de gens dans ces lieux et s’était habitué à beaucoup de choses, la marche pieds nus et les apôtres aux cheveux longs, les fanatiques du jeûne et les gourmands végétariens. Il y avait des végétariens, des végétarianiens, des végétabilistes, des crudivores, des frugivores et des mixivores (sic). -

A synchronoptic display is intended to illustrate the extent to which events in world history have influenced the development of Methodology: The upper part of the exhibit shows the central historical events. The lower part shows the history of naturopathy and the middle part the history of phytotherapy. Results: The synchronoptic representation made it possible to identify two periods, “historical gaps”, in which the development of phytotherapy stagnated due to world history: 1st gap: 14th century, 2nd gap: c. 1640 - c. 1800. Discussion: The reasons for the 1st gap were the process of deserted Medieval villages and the plague epidemic and for the 2nd gap, the Little Ice Age, the Thirty Years’ War and a lack of convincing theory about medical healing. Summary: Medicinal plants are among the oldest remedies and were used according to the principle of “trial and error”. What proved successful was passed on, and otherwise, discarded. -

Man had always been divorced from perfect health by the effects of sin, crime, sensuality, wrong methods of eating and drinking, plagues, famine, the struggle for ex istence, and the horrors of war. The killing that goes on in nature is not nearly so devilish as the bloody wars of extermination among men. Official medicine is as blindly at work today as it has ever worked, promulgating false methods of medical treatment to conceal its failures to cure by the equally false methods it has discarded, and the medical methods of today will, in turn, be discarded for the grotesque and equal ly false methods of tomorrow. Official schools of medicine and indi vidual practitioners are flooding the medical journals with literature on the practice of medicine that is based on the treatment of symptoms, but which has no effect on the cause of the given ailment. Bacteriologists contend thcd microbes are the sole origin of disease, whereas the truth is that disease is primarily caused by the accumula tion of fdth, or dead organic matter, in the tissues of the body, that can only be removed by agents consisting of an application of the forces of nature from without, or by nature herself, by the calling into being micro-organisms, or microbes, that are the product of fermentation, and are the indispensable agents that convert all manurial matter into the saline constituents that are essential for the nutrition of vegetable life. -

Advocates of water therapy claim that application of water therapy at first will cause multiple bowel movements until the body adjusts to the increased amount of fluid. Without spending money and medicine, tablet, injections, diagnosis, doctor fees etc. Just by drinking –pure water you will find that many diseases can be cured lick hyper tension, anaemia, obesity etc... One from water therapy, advocated by some alternative medicine proponents, is the consumption of a gutful of water upon waking in order cleans the bowel. A litter to a litter- a- half is the common amount ingested. This water therapy also known as Indian, chaines, and japans water therapy is claimer to have a wide range of health benefits or at least no adverse effects.
