Early Chess Albums: 1956 to 1959 by Frank Daniels LP-1425 to LP-1436 Soundtrack Rock, Rock, Rock LP-1425 First Appearance in Trades: BB December 15, 1956 The labels from pressing plant A have the catalog number in wide, bold print at the bottom. The authors’ names do not appear on the label. Neither side numbers nor master numbers appear on the label. Some copies (A1) have little space under the LP title, and little space above the first song on each side. Other copies (A2) have blank space separating the album title from the artists’ names, and blank space above the song titles. Still other copies (A3) have even more space above the song titles. The labels from pressing plant B have the catalog number in narrow print at the bottom. The authors’ names, side numbers, and master numbers all appear on the label, but the songs are not numbered. The first copies (B1) mistakenly list the author of “I Knew from the Start” as Moore and credit “Would I Be Lying” to Moore and Subotsky. and Subotsky The second labels from pressing plant B correctly credit “I Knew from the Start” to Moore and Subotsky, and credit “Would I Be Lying” to Moore. Some copies (B2) have the Side information closer to the song title below, while others (B3) have it closer to the line above. The original front cover design (fc1, shown above) indicated the LP number and “High Fidelity” in the lower left corner. The original back cover design (bc1, also above) only reads “HIGH FIDELITY” in the upper right corner. -

Counterpoint and Performance of Guitar Music – Historical and Contemporary Case Studies Paul Ballam–Cross B.Mus (Performance), M.L.I.S A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2019 School of Music Abstract This thesis examines how contemporary composers approach the guitar and counterpoint. An historical overview of the guitar is provided at the outset of the thesis, leading to detailed examination of contrapuntal technique in an extended twentieth-century work by Miklós Rózsa, and addresses effective guitar performance techniques in relation to different kinds of contrapuntal textures. These historical, technical and performance considerations then inform a series of interviews with six contemporary composers (Stephen Hough, Angelo Gilardino, Stephen Goss, Tilmann Hoppstock, Ross Edwards, and Richard Charlton). These interviews aim to provide insight into how 21st century composers approach contrapuntal writing for the guitar. The interviews are paired with detailed discussions of representative works for guitar by each composer. These discussions deal particularly with difficulties in practical performance and with how the composer has achieved their compositional goals. This thesis therefore seeks to discover how approaches to the guitar and counterpoint (including challenges, limitations and strategies) have changed and evolved throughout the instrument’s existence, up to some of the most recent works composed for it. i Declaration by author This thesis is composed of my original work, and contains no material previously published or written by another person except where due reference has been made in the text. Neal Allen Anderson Mark Katz © 2017 Alexander Harvey Marsden ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Alexander Harvey Marsden: “One Line Flows, Yeah I Got Some of Those”: Genre, Tradition, and the Reception of Rhythmic Regularity in Grime Flow (Under the direction of Jocelyn Neal) In its musical style and performance practices, the British rap genre grime bears the traces of London’s electronic dance music scene, out of which it emerged in the early 2000s. One such trace is grime’s characteristic style of flow—the rhythmic dimensions of a rapper’s delivery of text—and the role that this plays in encouraging grime’s listeners to move. This thesis argues that grime flow exhibits a tendency towards rhythmic regularity, which differentiates it from flow styles that tend toward irregularity. Drawing from music cognition and music-theoretic work on the pleasures of repetition for listeners, particularly in electronic dance music, it asks what listeners find engaging about grime flow’s regularity. It argues, through an analysis of Skepta’s “That’s Not Me,” that grime flow encourages a participatory mode of listening from its audience, which in turn contributes to a broader orientation towards communality in the genre. -

With pop and rap being the favored genres, proven in the charts from the last twenty years, what is today’s music genre? Using a few artists as reference along with collecting data, starting from the 1950s and ending with the 2010s, this paper will show the core of what was the most desired genre. -
