Photography Unit, University of Rochester WILLIAM HARRISON RIKER September 22, 1920–June 26, 1993 BY BRUCE BUENO DE MESQUITA AND KENNETH SHEPSLE ILLIAM RIKER WAS A VISIONARY scholar, institution builder, Wand intellect who developed methods for applying mathematical reasoning to the study of politics. By intro- ducing the precepts of game theory and social choice theory to political science he constructed a theoretical base for political analysis. This theoretical foundation, which he called “positive political theory,” proved crucial in the develop- ment of political theories based on axiomatic logic and amenable to predictive tests and experimental, historical, and statistical verification. Through his research, writing, and teaching he transformed important parts of political studies from civics and wisdom to science. Positive political theory now is a mainstream approach to political science. In no small measure this is because of Riker’s research. It is also a consequence of his superb teaching—he trained and influenced many students and colleagues who, in turn, helped spread the approach to universities beyond his intellectual home at the University of Rochester. Abstract NIE is a success story by many measures: four Nobel laureates in under 20 years, increasing penetration of mainstream journals, and significant impacts on major policy debates. This success is remarkable for a field that took shape as recently as the 1970’s around some relatively vague intuitions. It is even more so when we consider that it was divided from birth into distinct schools of thought. This paper reviews the history of NIE including the creation of an international society (ISNIE), documents the sometimes bumpy road to its current successes, and elucidates the challenges ahead. Will NIE be quietly absorbed by mainstream theory, or will it radically transform neoclassical economics into a new paradigm that includes institutions? I. Introduction New Institutional Economics (NIE) is a success story by many measures. To mention a few: four Nobel laureates in under 20 years; significant impacts on major policy debates ranging from anti-trust law to development aid; increasing penetration of mainstream journals; and a large and growing body of adherents, applied research, and relevant datasets. -

Counterpoint and Performance of Guitar Music – Historical and Contemporary Case Studies Paul Ballam–Cross B.Mus (Performance), M.L.I.S A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2019 School of Music Abstract This thesis examines how contemporary composers approach the guitar and counterpoint. An historical overview of the guitar is provided at the outset of the thesis, leading to detailed examination of contrapuntal technique in an extended twentieth-century work by Miklós Rózsa, and addresses effective guitar performance techniques in relation to different kinds of contrapuntal textures. These historical, technical and performance considerations then inform a series of interviews with six contemporary composers (Stephen Hough, Angelo Gilardino, Stephen Goss, Tilmann Hoppstock, Ross Edwards, and Richard Charlton). These interviews aim to provide insight into how 21st century composers approach contrapuntal writing for the guitar. The interviews are paired with detailed discussions of representative works for guitar by each composer. These discussions deal particularly with difficulties in practical performance and with how the composer has achieved their compositional goals. This thesis therefore seeks to discover how approaches to the guitar and counterpoint (including challenges, limitations and strategies) have changed and evolved throughout the instrument’s existence, up to some of the most recent works composed for it. i Declaration by author This thesis is composed of my original work, and contains no material previously published or written by another person except where due reference has been made in the text. Neal Allen Anderson Mark Katz © 2017 Alexander Harvey Marsden ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Alexander Harvey Marsden: “One Line Flows, Yeah I Got Some of Those”: Genre, Tradition, and the Reception of Rhythmic Regularity in Grime Flow (Under the direction of Jocelyn Neal) In its musical style and performance practices, the British rap genre grime bears the traces of London’s electronic dance music scene, out of which it emerged in the early 2000s. One such trace is grime’s characteristic style of flow—the rhythmic dimensions of a rapper’s delivery of text—and the role that this plays in encouraging grime’s listeners to move. This thesis argues that grime flow exhibits a tendency towards rhythmic regularity, which differentiates it from flow styles that tend toward irregularity. Drawing from music cognition and music-theoretic work on the pleasures of repetition for listeners, particularly in electronic dance music, it asks what listeners find engaging about grime flow’s regularity. It argues, through an analysis of Skepta’s “That’s Not Me,” that grime flow encourages a participatory mode of listening from its audience, which in turn contributes to a broader orientation towards communality in the genre. -

Preliminary Working Paper Please do not cite without author’s permission Contact: [email protected] Gordon Tullock on Majority Voting: the Making of a Conviction Julien Grandjean1 Abstract This paper participates in the formation of the history of public choice theory. In particular, it will focus on the role of Gordon Tullock and the analysis of the simple majority decision- making process promoted in the famous Calculus of Consent, written along with James M. Buchanan. This paper shows that Tullock has already think about the issue of majority voting prior to the writing of his common book with Buchanan. Between 1959 and 1961 in particular, while Tullock was a postdoctoral fellow at the Thomas Jefferson Center for Studies in Political Economy and Social Philosophy at the University of Virginia and later Assistant Professor in the Department of International Studies at the University of South Carolina, he had an interesting interaction with James M. Buchanan and Anthony Downs about majority decision-making process in a democracy. This interaction that consists in a correspondence between Tullock, Buchanan, Downs and their editors can be found for a part in the Gordon Tullock papers of the Hoover Institution Archives. It gave birth to some major articles such as The Problem of Majority Voting by Tullock in 1959, Why the Government Budget is Too Small in a Democracy by Downs in 1960, Problems of Majority Voting: In Defense of Majority Voting by Downs and Problems of Majority Voting: Reply to a Traditionalist by Tullock in 1961. Our purpose is to highlight the interaction that forms the basis of these publications and shows the way Tullock matured his view about the majoritarian rule – one of the cornerstones of the public choice theory – at this time. -
