2013 Hockey WA Annual Report 8 PRESIDENTS REPORT

I would like to begin the review of our past year by taking the opportunity to say what a great privilege it has been to be elected to the role of Hockey WA President. I have been on the Hockey WA (HWA) Board for five years, during which time I have seen a significant change in the composition and performance of both the Board and management. With the support of Council and the Board, I am looking forward to leading HWA into the next phase of growth and development.

In 2011 HWA published a Strategic Plan which sets out the purpose and direction of the association. This plan outlines a mission, “to manage the sustainable development and promotion of hockey for everyone”, and a vision, “Hockey everywhere for everyone”, which is underpinned by five core strategic platforms of Organisation, Revenue, High Performance, Participation and Facilities. Each area has a set of targeted outcomes that are a key part of the Board’s agenda. A number of significant achievements have been made against this plan during 2013 and these are set out below.

Organisation - the management structure at Hockey WA has been revamped over the last 12 months with the appointment of Peter Churack as CEO, a revitalised management team and department structure. The current management team at Hockey WA is the most experienced we have had in my time at Hockey WA. This has been a key deliverable for the Board with our focus now on improving the communication and collaboration between the Board, management and wider HWA community.

Revenue - A key concern for the Board over the past 5 years has been the ongoing financial viability of the association. Hockey is a sport which requires solid medium to long term planning to enable the substantial financial commitments required to maintain our current artificial turfs and to build new turfs. There have been difficult decisions to be made by the Board over the last few years which have impacted all stakeholders, however I am very pleased to advise that the Board believes we have now achieved a financial balance and our focus is being redirected from ensuring HWA is financially sustainable to looking at how to further grow the sport.

High Performance - HWA takes great pride in the performance of our elite athletes in both our local and national competition. As an association we are committed to balancing our support for both our senior elite players while developing new talent through our junior ranks. We have a new model in the High Performance area with Melissa Grey (nee Hall) setting up a broader coaching system for our juniors which is allowing more juniors to be exposed to higher quality coaching and advice. Over the last 12 months we have initiated both the HWA Talent Accelerant Program (TAP) and the HWA Academy Program which provide stepping stones for the development of 180 talented juniors between the ages of 13 and 20 years of age to WAIS and Hockey Australia high performance programs.

Participation - The Board of HWA realises that the long term viability of hockey as a sport relies on increasing player numbers across all ages and grades. Hockey has enjoyed sustained growth in player numbers at all levels across WA for many years, having averaged 3% growth over the last 5 years. The challenge for the ongoing growth of the sport across WA is the increasing demand for synthetic turfs, discussed below. We will continue to promote and develop the sport; however, the immediate focus will be on the development of new facilities to allow us to support the planned growth in numbers.

Facilities - Currently, the development of new synthetic facilities is the single biggest challenge for HWA. Limitations of existing facilities, expected growth in player numbers along with growing demand to use turf from our existing players means that growth of hockey in WA is constrained by the limited capacity of our current facilities. This will be a major focus in the coming year with plans being developed to not only provide guidance on potential financial support from HWA but also to provide clubs with tangible support through the feasibility process. HWA is also looking at working with clubs and government directly to expedite the approval and development process. The strategic plan sets out the way forward for HWA as agreed by the association members and, as the members’ representatives, it is the Board’s responsibility to ensure that the objectives in the plan are being worked towards and achieved. While the strategic plan is reviewed and refined over time the underlying driver will always remain, the development of hockey for all, be it elite or social, veterans or minkey.

2013 Hockey WA Annual Report 9 Whilst there were some very positive moves towards meeting our strategic objectives there were a number of challenges faced during the 2013 year by the hockey community; particularly the elite local competition. Some of the rule changes caused significant confusion during the year, however processes have been put in place to ensure this situation does not arise again. There are lessons ot be learnt for all through this season and as an association we need to be prepared to learn and move past such distractions to meet our longer term objectives. The Board has, at length, discussed these and is focussed on not passing blame or avoiding criticism but rather ensuring that these situations are not repeated.

Finally, there are numerous partners without whom we could not continue to operate and provide the services, facilities and opportunities currently available to our hockey community and I would like to pass on our appreciation for their support: • Our major government sponsors, the Department of Sport and Recreation and Healthway; and our commercial sponsors, ABS, CBH, DLA Piper, FHE, Kukri, Sportscover and Argonaut, who make a significant financial contribution to our sport and without whom we could not provide the services, world class facilities and competition; • Our elite competition partner, Melville Toyota whose continued support allows us to operate a world class elite competition for the best of our local players; • The Board of Hockey WA, who provide significant volunteer hours to govern our association and support the management team. In particular I would like to thank David Moroney who is standing down from the Hockey WA Board at the AGM in December after serving for two and a half years. David has been a major contributor to the Board over this period; thankyou David; • In September, Tony Lalor stood down as President of Hockey WA after taking on the role 12 months earlier. I would like to thank Tony not only for his contribution over the last year but over multiple decades and into the future as he continues on the Board. • Finally all the volunteers across our sport, club committee members, parents coaching and supporting junior hockey, umpires at every game, board committee members and all other people who commit their personal time to support our great sport. The enormous contribution by so many volunteers in our sport is the cornerstone of our past and future success.

Thanks to all who have been involved in hockey in 2013 and let us all work towards making 2014 another year of positive progress and growth in hockey in WA.

Phil Nillsen President

2013 Hockey WA Annual Report 10 CEO’S REPORT

The best approach to providing a report on the year just completed is to review the operation through each of its departments. Finance

At the commencement of the year the CFO, Sarah de Rozario undertook maternity leave. This did pose a number of challenges in the newly restructured department, however with the appointment of an acting Finance Manager Aneta Zimon-Killoran and the application of stringent financial controls and processes, the financial strength of Hockey WA continues to improve. Today the Board of Hockey WA through its subcommittee the Audit and Finance committee receives a comprehensive report not only outlining the performance for the month, but a re-forecast against the annual budget, a cash flow report and exception reports per department. This has lead in turn to the strong financial position reported later in this annual report. Infrastructure and Facilities

Over the course of the year a full preventive maintenance program has been devised and is now being implemented.

Such initiatives as;- 1. the replacement and rotation of globes on fields 1 & 2 has improved the lighting efficiencies by 30% 2. the installation of new seating within the main stand is providing improved comfort for patrons and reducing maintenance and cleaning costs due to their improved design. 3. the purchase of a new more efficient turf cleaning machine which both improves the cleaning process while reducing labour costs by half. 4. the replacement of Field 2 with a state of the art Greenfields surface which is similar to the surface that the 2014 World Cup will be played upon. 5. the replacement of Field 1 with the latest Astroturf surface. 6. the replacement of the turf water cannons on turf 2 both reducing the amount of water required and the time taken to perform each cycle. With the full replacements of both Turfs now completed the continued maintenance and development of the Perth Hockey Stadium will focus on the development of better facilities for patrons and spectators, including the provision of more undercover seating.

Additionally this department under the management of Gerrit Engelbrecht has undertaken the task of providing support to clubs contemplating the development of their own artificial turf facilities. This support will take the form of providing correct advice as to the latest in turf manufacture and installation. Assistance will also be provided by the Finance department in the development of applications to Councils and DSR for feasibility studies and funding applications; providing a strong resource to clubs wishing to streamline and fast track turf developments.

High Performance

The resignation of Sally Bell prior to the commencement of the season created a vacuum within this department, however Hockey WA was fortunate in securing the services of Melissa Grey (nee Hall) in the role of High Performance manager. A prime objective of this department over the course of 2013 was the establishment of a high performance identification and development program, the result being the implementation of the Talent Accelerant Program (TAP).

2013 Hockey WA Annual Report 11 The TAP initiative has proven to be extremely successful and has enabled approximately 60 athletes across both genders to engage with State AHL, WAIS, National Junior and Senior coaches over the course of the year and receive targeted coaching and feedback on essential skills that the national development pathway is looking for. While TAP is looking to identify athletes from the age of 15 to 20, the development of the Hockey WA Academy program is targeted at younger athletes and will provide entry level programs for those children wishing to develop their skills. Both programs are designed to run alongside club programs and are programmed to work primarily over the course of the off season. Game Development and Participation.

This department of Hockey WA faces the biggest challenges in particular providing available turf time for a growing competition. As a point of comparison the number of registered hockey players in WA is approaching 20,000 and surpasses the numbers registered in Victoria, however in that state there are approximately 57 artificial surfaces available for the staging of the competition, while in Perth we have access to only 10 artificial surfaces. Each week during the course of the season 450 matches are fixtured requiring grounds, umpires and in many cases technical officers and ball kids, the coordination of which is a mammoth task and inevitably there are challenges. Hockey WA continues to review its performance in this area and improvements and streamlining have been realised in 2013 and further such enhancements will occur in the coming season.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Hockey community of WA for its support in this my initial year as CEO of the organisation, my thanks to the staff for their support and to the Board all of whom are volunteers and who provide so much support and direction for Hockey WA. Peter Churack. Chief Executive Officer

2013 Hockey WA Annual Report 12 HIGH PERFORMANCE MANAGER’S REPORT 2013 has been a very exciting time in the HP Department. It was with great honour that I was able to take on the role in March after Sally Bell’s departure. A big thank you must go to Sally for her work ethic and commitment to the role and enabling such a smooth transition.

The focus for 2013 has been on that of athlete development and pathways for our talented players. In the first half of the year we saw the Athlete Development programs run for the U18 & U16 Squads, this was then extended to take in the U14 group in the middle of the year. These programs were to be the impetus for the creation of TAP – the Talent Accelerant Program that is currently underway and going from strength to strength.

TAP has engaged over 65 of our most talented junior players. TAP underpins the WAIS programs and has direct links to National Team themes and concepts. We have enabled the athlete’s access to a truly high performance experience where skill development is always at the fore. Even in the infancy of the program, athletes have had access to National and WAIS coaches, played games against the Hockeyroos, Singapore and the Hotspurs and will be undertaking the Developing Champions course. I am very proud of all the efforts of the TAP coaches and athletes and am confident that the steps being taken now will shine through in performances for many years to come. To ensure that we are able to support TAP long term and to increase and stabilise our talent pool the HWA Academy program was also established in November of 2013. 60 boys and girls were identified to attend trainings during summer in the build-up to the U15 Nationals in April 2014. We will look on with anticipation on how this program assists player performances especially now that Hockey Australia has allowed states to send 2 teams away for both the U13 & U15 Nationals. In response to the U15 Nationals time change and the 2 WA teams, open trials were held for this age group for the first time in November. Over 240 athletes took part across 4 days and it was great to see so many skilful players involved. Again we want to thank the support of the coaches and selectors for allowing us to engage in this process and to provide the opportunity to so many players. Our State teams do and always will, form a crucial link in our athlete pathways and we are very proud of all the efforts and results of our teams in 2013. Jen Anyalai, along with all the volunteer off field staff, have done a wonderful job in supporting over 540 athletes in representing WA at National Championships throughout the year. In additional to developing the technical knowledge of our athletes HWA provided programs that assisted in the development of leadership, goal setting and physical competence. The Department of Sport and Recreations Developing Champions program was attended by over 20 junior athletes and both U13 state teams participated in the Physical Competency trial. The trial was part of a 2 year pilot program. The results currently have really highlighted the need for long term athlete development plans becoming part of our junior curriculum not only in state teams but clubs also. Our coaches also participating in furthering their skill set with 15 coaches who range from club to underage state and AHL coaches completing the theory aspects of their Level 2 coaches’ course. The weekend was a huge success with participants being shown modern techniques and being able to perform game analysis during the ISS. There were new faces to the High Performance Advisory group after the departure of Clover Maitland, Peter Freer and Colin Howell. The work accomplished by all three members has been outstanding and the benefits of their work can be seen throughout the wider hockey community. This year the HPAG welcomed the 2 new WAIS coaches, Jeremy Davy and Chris O’Reilly, along with Brent Dancer and Suzanne Tiverios. All members have brought a wealth of high performance experience with them and we look forward to an even more produc tive year in 2014. Finally a very big thank you must go to the ongoing support of the volunteers who have helped with the many high performance programs that HWA undertook during the year. Your knowledge and assistance has and will continue to grow our players.

Melissa Grey (nee Hall) Manager - High Performance

2013 Hockey WA Annual Report 13 GAME DEVELOPMENT & PARTICIPATION MANAGER’S REPORT 2013 has seen some new, and not so new, faces join the Game Development and Participation team at Hockey WA. Ben Bregazzi has taken over the role of Game Development, Education and Officiating Co-Ordinator and since commencing the role in the middle part of the season, Ben has needed to hit the ground running. Ben has done an amazing job picking things up mid-season, and will be a massive bonus to our planning and implementation of key initiatives moving forward.

Mark Watton resigned from the position of Manager Participation to take up a role at Hale. Mark did a fantastic job in this role and has left me with big shoes to fill. I would like to thank Mark for the time and effort he afforded to ensure this department had a clear and direct vision moving forward. The year has seen some ups and downs in the season, however, after some minor hiccups along the way, the season finished with a fantastic display of hockey, and weather, on Grand Final day. Congratulations must go to Curtin Trinity Pirates who ran away with the MTL Women’s Premiership over UWA for a second year in a row. The Men’s competition was the closest ladder we have seen for over a decade. With only a couple of points separating position 2 down to position 6 in the final placings, the last few rounds of the men’s competition proved vital when securing a spot in the top 5. Congratulations to YMCC who beat Westside Wolves to take out the 2013 MTL Men’s Premiership.

The quality of both the men’s and the women’s final was some of the best that Hockey in WA has seen for some years, and is testament to the work being done at grass roots level to ensure the success of our competition for many years to come. Melissa Trivic continued to achieve success and recognition at international umpiring levels, being the first WA Female umpire to be appointed to the World Development Panel, 2013. This is a massive achievement for Melissa, and thoroughly deserved. Melissa is a fantastic ambassador for the work that goes into umpiring and officiating in WA. Well done, Melissa. They key initiatives that the Game Development and Participation department will be focussing on moving into 2014 will follow on and remain in line with Hockey WA’s strategic vision. Some of these key areas are: • The Junior Umpiring Program • A formalised umpire coaching program • Implementation of a Quality Club Program for affiliated clubs • The Introduction of coaching and umpiring workshops • The continued improvement of the Melville Toyota League website • The use of both Facebook and twitter as communication tools to our members and the public at large Healthway’s continued sponsorship of the Regional Participation program enabled us to maintain the focus on participation and again saw a huge number of children participate in school hockey programs in and around Albany, Bunbury, Busselton, Collie, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Mandurah and Narrogin. Our Regional Development Officers – Lisa Flynn, Rodney Johnson, Brook Bean, Amanda McFall, Julie Oates, Megan Pollard, Wendy Wales, Annabelle Little and Judith Want – have worked tirelessly to achieve this result and should be commended for their work. Congratulations and thank you to all volunteers involved with Hockey WA and our affiliates who give up their time and efforts for the betterment of the sport in Western Australia. Hope Munro Manager - Participation

2013 Hockey WA Annual Report 14 FACILITIES & INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGER’S REPORT The year 2013 was another busy year at the Perth Hockey Stadium. The highlight of the season was definitely the hosting of the International Super Series in October this year with more than 6400 spectators through the gates over the four days. The event gave us another great opportunity to showcase our very good facility internationally. We also hosted the Test Series’ versus Korea and Japan in March.

With the ongoing maintenance issues with the nylon surface on PHS 1, AstroTurf took the decision to replace field with a polyethylene carpet as part of a warranty replacement. Work on the field will start in the first week of January 2014 to be ready for the start of the pre-season training.

In November this year we did a scheduled turf replacement of PHS 2. Greenfields won the tender and initially the project consisted of replacing the shock pad and the carpet only. Unfortunately, when the turf was lifted we could see that the levels of the asphalt base layer were very poor and it would affect the laying of the new shock pad. We had very little choice but to resurface the asphalt base layer. The feedback from the players has been very good so far. The Greenfields TX surface will be the 2014 World Cup surface. Following the installations, both turfs will be certified by FIH to enable us to host international events on both turfs.

As a facility, we are very conscious of the increase in utility costs and our efficiency. Through the assistance of the Department of Sport and Recreation WA we have engaged with Greensense to do a sustainability audit of Perth Hockey Stadium. The initial findings were presented to a working group in early December. We are planning to hold several workshops in March 2014 to discuss the findings with stakeholders and staff.

It has been another good year in the bar and cafe with a significant increase in conferences and functions at the facility. Unfortunately, the events we hosted at PHS did not generate the expected sales and the issues around it will be addressed at the start of the New Year.

We are at the moment looking at options to cover some of the seating area to enhance the experience for patrons.

As 2013 draws to a close I would like to thank the facility staff and the ground controllers for their commitment and hard work. Perth Hockey Stadium will continue to offer high quality facilities and will continue to strive to be the no.1 facility in Australia.

Gerrit Engelbrecht Manager - Facilities and Infrastructure

2013 Hockey WA Annual Report 15 WAIS MEN’S REPORT

The WAIS Men’s Hockey Program had a very busy 2013 with athletes competing in teams all over Australia and different parts of the world. It all started with Kookaburras coach announcing his 2013 senior and development squads in December 2012, with; , Tristan Clemons, , , and Graeme Begbie all selected in the senior ranks, whilst; Chris Bausor, Craig Boyne, Tim Bates and Nathan McGuire earned inclusion in the development squad. In February, Australia selected a youthful squad for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia with Chris Bausor, Craig Boyne, Tim Bates, Trent Mitton and Aran Zalewski called up. Trent Mitton starred for the Kookaburras in March as they won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia. Australia posted victories over India (4-3) and Pakistan (6-0) before a 1-1 stalemate with hosts Malaysia. Australia guaranteed its progression to the final with a last-up round robin victory over New Zealand (3-2). Trent Mitton scored the winning goal in the Kookaburras’ 3-2 final win over Malaysia and was named player of the final, as well as earning representation in the team of the tournament. Tim Bates also suffered an injury during the tournament that would keep him out of hockey till AHL in October. In April the U21 Nationals were held in Brisbane with Daniel Robertson, Matthew Lim and Frank Main selected to compete. With a young team selected, although competitive, they struggled to keep up against teams such as QLD, Vic and NSW. They missed out to compete in the top four on goal difference drawing their last 3 games to finish 6th.

At the completion of the tournament another 2 athletes were included into the WAIS cohort, Ross Hall and Marshall Roberts. A preliminary National U21 squad was selected for the Burras ahead of their Junior World Cup in December following the event. WAIS athletes Matthew Lim and Daniel Robertson were included in this selection. The Kookaburras won a four test series 2-0 against Korea in Perth during May with Trent Mitton, , Kiel Brown, Chris Bausor and Aran Zalewski all getting game time. Matthew Lim was selected for an Australian U21 squad to travel to Europe for matches in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in early June. Unfortunately during this tour Matthew suffered a serious foot injury, which would end his Junior World Cup ambitions for 2013. Late June saw an Australia “A” SIS/SAS tour to China. Training and matches were based at Liaoning Navigation Sport School, located in the Lushunkou District of Dalian City. The Sport School had accommodation, 2 training pitches and 1 competition pitch. Liaoning Men’s Hockey Team have won the Chinese National Championships for the last 6 consecutive years and boast up to 11 National Chinese Squad Members. The team played 5 games winning the first 4 games and losing the last 3-2. WAIS athletes Daniel Sampey, Craig Boyne, Chris Bausor, Nathan McGuire and Tyler Lovell were all included in the touring squad. During this same period there was also a touring USA side to Melbourne. A combined SIS/SAS team was announced to compete, with Ross Hall being the only WAIS athlete named in the squad. The U18 Men’s State Championships were held in Newcastle early July. Although no WAIS athletes were competing in the tournament, it gave the current athletes an opportunity to shine for future selection. The team lost a close semi final to the eventual winners Victoria 1-0, but regrouped in the playoff for third and fourth to claim bronze against Queensland 2-0.

2013 Hockey WA Annual Report 16 With such a youthful team and good result, 3 players were selected into the National Futures Group, which will be holding a camp in Brisbane, February 2014. Goalkeeper Hayden Walker as well as brothers James and Simon Benetti thoroughly deserved their selection. Special comment should be given to their coach Alistair Park as his professional approach gave a true reflection on how the team performed.

Late July saw the best Australian athletes come to Perth to compete in a National Camp. The National Camp was played over a week, which saw 4 teams compete over a series of games. 3 of the teams were a compilation of current and developing national players, Burra squad members as well as recognised athletes all around Australia whilst the 4th was a Burras group. Graeme Begbie, Fergus Kavanagh, Trent Mitton, Tristan Clemons, Aran Zalewski, Tyler Lovell, Chris Bausor, Craig Boyne, Nathan McGuire, Daniel Sampey, Daniel Robertson and Frank Main were all part of the camp.

With an outstanding performance at the camp, Frank Main who was not initially in the Burras squad, received an invite to compete with the Burras team in a series of matches against Malaysia in Brisbane. Following the camp Frank had a good debut at AHL, which would see him force his way into the 18 man squad named to compete in the Junior World Cup in December. September saw the announcement of the AHL Thundersticks team with Kiel Brown, Fergus Kavanagh, Trent Mitton, Tristan Clemons, Tyler Lovell, Chris Bausor, Craig Boyne, Nathan McGuire, Tim Bates, Daniel Sampey, Frank Main and Ross Hall all being named. Both Frank Main and Ross Hall made their debut for the Thundersticks. Unfortunately with a series of bad Frank Main - Junior World Cup performances it saw the Thundersticks only winning 1 game in the series to finish 7th. Post AHL 3 teams were announced. A team to compete in the International Super Series in Perth, an Australia “A” team to compete against, Argentina, Pakistan and Malaysia also in Perth as well as a team to compete for Oceania in New Zealand. Kiel Brown, Fergus Kavanagh, Trent Mitton, Aran Zalewski, Tyler Lovell, Chris Bausor, Craig Boyne and Nathan McGuire were all involved in at least one of the teams. Chris O’Reilly WAIS Coach (Men)

2013 Hockey WA Annual Report 17 WAIS WOMEN’S REPORT

2013 was a transitional year for the WAIS Women’s Hockey Program. In starting the year with 12 full scholarship holders, four of those withdrew due to varying reasons. Katy Symons, Katelyn Smith, Karla Barrett and Kersten Smith all departed WAIS at different points of the year. Further to this Olympians and Kobie McGurk retired from international hockey and by association withdrew from WAIS. By the end of the year Ashleigh Nelson and were the only WA representatives in the National Senior Squad. Hence many new, younger athletes were offered invitations to train with WAIS in 2013 at different times, and as a result, there will be eight current and six new scholarship holders in 2014. The Hockeyroos have had a successful year in significant events, winning the World League 3 event against Olympic bronze medallist England, and defeating the Olympic 4th placed holder New Zealand in the Oceania Cup. The final event for the year is the World League 4 in Argentina and this will be the most testing of all the events. Ashleigh Nelson was WA’s only representative at these events. The role of WAIS in helping to restock the WA component of the national team will take considerable time. Although many players have taken significant steps in their personal pathway this year, they started a distance from the national group and hence there are not replacements earmarked for the immediate future. In terms of identification was WA’s sole representative in the Australian Junior World Cup Team to compete in event held in Germany in July. Kathryn along with Kate Denning has been selected in the 2014 National Development Squad. Penny Squibb, Kyra Flynn and Rachel Frusher have been selected for the U23 National Junior Squad, and 5 athletes have been chosen for the U18 National Futures Squad. These players are: Georgia Wilson, Aimee Clark, Ashleigh McNess, Preah Hetherington and Aleisha Power. Elysia Burvill was a selected reserve. It is this group of girls where the most significant investment should be made and a critical mass of elite performers may come from to reinstate WA’s contribution to the senior national program. Kathryn Slattery - Junior World Cup The WAIS program has focused on technical and tactical development as well as prioritizing improvements in specialist penalty corner skills, physical fitness, agility and strength. We have implemented and maintained 6-8 weekly training sessions throughout the year and the group have adapted well to this new load. Physical results have improved dramatically, and in 2014 the emphasis will be broadened to incorporate speed technique, reinforce stretching and recovery regimes, and increase exposure to psychology and performance thinking. Our U18, U21 and AHL state representative teams that comprise WAIS athletes finished 3rd, 5th and 2nd respectively. Both the 18’s and AHL teams improved by two places on their 2012 position, whilst the U21’s has to work very hard to gain the same improvement in 2014. It is the desire of our program to seek interstate competition as an institute in 2014. Some of our athletes will only have 1 competition in 2014, falling in October. It is vital for several reasons that our players are exposed more regularly and any partnership with HWA in this proposal would be warmly welcomed.

2013 Hockey WA Annual Report 18 There were several encouraging aspects to 2013, and the launch of the Hockey WA Academy as a pilot to the TAP scheme would certainly be one of these. Close cooperation to build, refine and implement this program through the season has culminated in a wonderful and extremely necessary training program that will underpin the future of WAIS and therefore WA women’s hockey. This project is a platform that will increase the strength of our state teams, and will also spark some other significant proposals based around nurturing our existing and future talent. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year in the WAIS role, and look forward to building on the significant steps taken in 2013.
