Brisbane Hockey Association Inc - 14 - Annual Report 2005 Special thank you to Kim Rendell and Board Members for their D I R E C T O R S ' R E P O R T S support during the season.

DI R E C T O R O F C O M P E T I T I O N S Phyllis Hawgood This is my second year as Competitions Director and it proved to be Director of Administration no easier than the first. I must thank Kim Rendell, Barry Bolton and June Grant for their invaluable help throughout the season as well as the officials of all clubs. The cooperation of the management of BWHA, in particular Jenny Heron, ensured that on the whole the DI R EC T O R O F UM P I R E S season progressed smoothly with only a few minor hiccups. Thanks What started as a promising year for umpires went downhill during the must also go to the staff at SHC and Shawsports for their assistance latter part of the season but concluded with a successful finals finish throughout the year. to the season. A number of factors like scheduling, injuries, family commitments and work contributed to the lack of umpires during the As you know, the fixtures had to be arranged around the National season. This was not helped by the, at times, lack of support by the League games and the week-long finals at the S.H.C. Brisbane Hockey Association Inc - 15 - Annual Report 2005 DI R E C T O R O F V E TE RAN S Something to think about is that it is possible that Queensland could host this event in 2007. If not then it will be 2008. These days it runs over two weeks and requires three pitches to schedule the whole Brisbane Hockey Association Veterans’ Sub-Committee thing. Chairman’s Report for 2005 follows.

THANKS PREMIERSHIP COMPETITION – VETS HOCKEY IS GROWING People who helped out this year included our key committee One extra team was added this year with Kedron Wavell nominating members - Ian Edwards (Secretary), Gary Smith (Treasurer), Ian two teams, Strikers dropping out, and Redcliffe entering in their own Halliday (BHA Director for Veterans), our selection panel which pretty right. This made 14 teams to accommodate. The decision was made much came down to Chris Reid and Graeme Higgins, and Col to split into two divisions of seven teams each. By scheduling a bye in Shepperd who once again organised the Grand Final Presentation each of three seven game rounds, we could maintain the format of six function. Thanks to these people. Graeme and Col between them games a week, all played on Tuesday nights at State Hockey Centre. managed to keep the legendary Legends newsletter circulating to Changes to teams in each division saw Norths in Div One, Redcliffe keep us all informed about important hockey matters. and Kedron’s second team in Division Two. Fixtures ran from mid- March, with finals played early in September. Thanks also to BHA for their support and co-operation through the season. Vets do enjoy a degree of autonomy which works well for us Once again all games were played in a competitive manner but in and I’m sure allows Brisbane Hockey to concentrate on the game at good spirit, albeit maybe a little slower than in years gone by. Most of other levels. the umpiring was done by vets players. Thanks to those who backed up to umpire on a regular basis. Having all games on the one night PLANS FOR 2006 SEASON once again made for a good atmosphere, and we have been fortunate the last couple of years with this scheduling. Hopefully we are able to get our fixtures all at SHC on one night again, although if we get further growth that won’t be possible. If Red- cliffe get their new pitch there could be an option there. One small concern, particularly early in the season was that unavailability of a drink after late games, sometimes even after middle games if you weren’t on your toes. The Colmslie Sports Club saw the There are probably a few things we can do better next year. One thing that comes to mind is that I’m sure we can get a better prepared and value after a while though, and kept the soft drinks cold for the whole night. better organised team to compete in 45s State Championships.

RESULTS In 2006 State Championships are in Mackay for 40s and 55s on May Brisbane Veteran’s Premiers for 2005 were Easts in Division One, Day weekend, and Sunshine Coast on June Queen’s Birthday week- and Kedron Wavell in Division Two. Grand final night was Tuesday as end for 45s. Nationals are in Perth commencing 2 October. normal, however starting times for both games were staggered so that we had our presentations under way at a very respectable hour. The hour that it finally wound up wasn’t quite so respectable. One thing that has been suggested is a weekday afternoon timeslot for older vets to have a casual hit. Maybe one afternoon from 3 or 4 o’clock, maybe rotating around Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine In Inter-city competition Brisbane Over 40’s were successful in the Coast. We plan to see how much interest there is in something like Coulter Shield, Over 45’s finished third in the Bill Bennett Trophy this. which is run on a format similar to Coulter Shield.

With that, have a great off-season, and let’s look forward to doing it STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS again next year. A combined over 40, over 45 tournament was held in Ipswich on the June long weekend. Brisbane fielded two teams in 40s, and three in 45s. There were some issues and lessons learned with selections for Gil Voysey these teams, but overall the participation level was again excellent. Brisbane Veterans Committee Chairperson

Congratulations to the 40s first team, led by Greg Morgan, who won the State Championship. The second 40s team also performed really strongly.

In the 45 section the results were less impressive, with number one team placed fifth.

A separate event was held in Townsville in late July for over 55 divi- sion. We had a team travel up from Brisbane for the weekend to finish third in a six team round robin competition.

AUSTRALIAN VETERANS’ CHAMPIONSHIPS This year this terrific event was held in Wollongong with a total of 63 teams playing. Twelve teams represented Queensland in age groups of over 40 (4 teams), 45 (3), 50 (2), 55, 60, and 65. Results were real- ly terrific for the Queensland sides, with 45s winning, 40s and 60s came second, and 40-2, 40-3, 45-2, 50s all winning second and third division competitions.

The junior organisation relies heavily on volunteers in order to manage the sport. The contribution of the committee this year has been excellent with all members accepting several roles throughout the season. But as we all know it requires many people to contribute many quality hours in all areas of the sport for the association to operate efficiently. Over the last two years I have observed a new culture, especially in the U7 to U13 age groups. The support for each other amongst the clubs and their willingness to volunteer for the association is certainly encouraging for the future management of the sport.

I would like to acknowledge the many volunteers for their dedication and contributions throughout the season.

• June Grant, who manages the daily operation of the association, at times under unnecessary harassment, her contribution is unparalleled. • Greg Swann, orchestrated a most successful U13 Championships, managed several rep teams, Bris U18 (2), Bris Premier League (2), Qld U15 as well as his regular contribution. I personally thank Greg for his valued advice and support.
