A Social History of Private Members’ Clubs in Colonial Kenya This thesis explores the institutional legacy of colonialism through the history of private members clubs in Kenya. In this colony, clubs developed as institutions which were crucial in assimilating Europeans to a race-based, ruling community. Funded and managed by a settler elite of British aristocrats and officers, clubs institutionalized European unity. This was fostered by the rivalry of Asian migrants, whose claims for respectability and equal rights accelerated settlers' cohesion along both political and cultural lines. Thanks to a very bureaucratic apparatus, clubs smoothed European class differences; they fostered a peculiar style of sociability, unique to the colonial context. Clubs were seen by Europeans as institutions which epitomized the virtues of British civilization against native customs. In the mid-1940s, a group of European liberals thought that opening a multi-racial club in Nairobi would expose educated Africans to the refinements of such sociability.

    211 SECTION II PROVINCIAL AND DISTRICT RECORD BOOKS The sixteen reels of Political Record Books (PRB) contain materials that were origi­ nally intended to be a continually expanding collection of data and source of information for use by colonial officials. As such, subjects found in these records range from character evaluations of headml,n, comments on various tribes, oral tradition, and lengthy analyses of tribal law and customs, to land and boundary issues, education policy, and statistics. News­ paper and magazine clippings, correspondence, and departmental and administrative reports are included. Political Record Books, in short, contain such information considered by officials as of sufficil:nt importance to meet the needs of their successors in terms both of historical background and current administrative problems. District and provincial offi­ cers regularly updated these records, and although on occasion certain record books under­ went major reorganization, the arrangement of the records vary considerably from one record to another and in fact often leave a great deal to be desired in terms of organization. Headings found in the record books, e. g., are not always indicative of the material found therein. The bulk of the materials were compiled before World War II. Entries are arranged in the following manner: citations on the Kenya National Archives inserts appear as elsewhere in capitals. Existing literature, which is sketchy and fragmentary fail to establish the evolution and complexity of Meru political organization and governance of Meru community. Thus, the impact of internal and external forces on the social cultural, economic and political organization of the Meru has not been established. In effect then, many gaps both in terms of available and hitherto unexplored data and their analysis exists making the study of the political organization of the Meru apriority research topic.

Kithinji Department of Humanities, Chuka University, P.O BOX 109-60400 Chuka, Kenya ABSTRACT: Pre colonial histories of Africa have not been given adequate scholarly attention. This gave impetus to this study whose purpose was to examine the social, political and economic organization of the Meru people of Kenya with the intent of preserving their history. The pre colonial period broadly refers to the time prior to the introduction of European colonization in areas across the world. Before the arrival of the British in Meru the people of the area enjoyed a peaceful coexistence and had well established social, political and economic systems. Colonialism was introduced in Meru in 1907 when the British administrators arrived in the area. The study was conducted in Meru County Kenya. Purposive and snowballing techniques were used to identify thirty (30) respondents who were engaged in oral interviews. The research instruments included interview schedules and document analysis. The study established that before the advent of colonialism the Meru people had well organized social, political and economic structures that ensured continuity, social cohesion and stability of the community. The study recommended that the current social, political and economic structures could borrow some of the traditional forms of organization and come up with hybrid structures to improve efficiency. Kenya has at least 42 ethnic communities, and has been described as a hotbed of ethnic polarisation. The study is interested in how the participants use language to position themselves and others in relation to ethnicity, as well as to draw on or make reference to notions of Kenyan nationalism. The data for this study is drawn from Facebook discussions on two different groups: one ‘open’ and one ‘closed’. The data also includes participants from different ethnic groups and political leanings. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Engagement and Face-work are used as theoretical frameworks to explore how participants draw on different discourses to construct their ethnicities and position themselves as Kenyan nationals. The analysis also explores how informants expand and contract the dialogic space, as well as how they perform face-work during these interactions.
