Starting with Michener's early life experiences in Doylestown (Pennsylvania), the conversation includes his family's poverty, his wanderings across the United States, and his reading at the local public library. The dialogue includes his education at Swarthmore College (Pennsylvania), St. Andrews University (Scotland), Colorado State University (Fort Collins, Colorado) where he became a social studies teacher, and Harvard (Cambridge, Massachusetts) where he pursued, but did not complete, a Ph.D. in education. Michener's experiences as a textbook editor at Macmillan Publishers and in the U.S. Navy during World War II are part of the discourse. The exchange elaborates on how Michener began to write fiction, focuses on his great success as a writer, and notes that he and his wife donated over $100 million to educational institutions over the years. JAMES A. MICHENER Has Published More Than 30 Books
Bowdoin College Commencement 1992 One of America’s leading writers of historical fiction, JAMES A. MICHENER has published more than 30 books. His writing career began with the publication in 1947 of a book of interrelated stories titled Tales of the South Pacific, based upon his experiences in the U.S. Navy where he served on 49 different Pacific islands. The work won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize, and inspired one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, which won its own Pulitzer Prize. Michener’s first book set the course for his career, which would feature works about many cultures with emphasis on the relationships between different peoples and the need to overcome ignorance and prejudice. Random House has published Michener’s works on Japan (Sayonara), Hawaii (Hawaii), Spain (Iberia), Southeast Asia (The Voice of Asia), South Africa (The Covenant) and Poland (Poland), among others. Michener has also written a number of works about the United States, including Centennial, which became a television series, Chesapeake, and Texas. Since 1987, the prolific Michener has written five books, including Alaska and his most recent work, The Novel. His books have been issued in virtually every language in the world. Michener has also been involved in public service, beginning with an unsuccessful 1962 bid for Congress. From 1979 to 1983, he was a member of the Advisory Council to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, an experience which he used to write his 1982 novel Space. Captain Nemo/Lt-General Pitt Rivers and Cleopatra’s Needle — A Story of Flagships Christopher Evans ([email protected]) Recently re-reading Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea for our children I was struck by the marked similarities between the novel’s elusive protagonist, Captain Nemo, and the renowned later 19th century British archaeologist, Lt.-General Pitt Rivers. Could they have been the same person? How could something so seemingly blatant have gone unnoticed? These questions are, of course, only raised in a spirit of academic tongue-in-check. Yet, in an ethos of ‘learning through amusement’ (itself directly relevant to the themes of this study), exploring the parallels between these two ‘heroic’ individuals provides insights into the nature of 19th century science, Victorian edification and disciplinary institutionalisation (e.g. Levine 1986). This eclectic contribution will, moreover, be introduced with the third component of its headline title – Cleopatra’s Needle – as this provides an appropriately quasi- nautical parable on the project of 19th century archaeology and the problem of ‘deep time’ (Murray 1993). Atkinson ________________________ Adviser Professor Lois Rosow School of Music Graduate Program ABSTRACT Since its opening in 1949, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Pulitzer Prize- winning musical South Pacific has been regarded as a masterpiece of the genre. Frequently revived, filmed for commercial release in 1958, and filmed again for television in 2000, it has reached audiences in the millions. It is based on selected stories from James A. Michener’s book, Tales of the South Pacific, also a Pulitzer Prize winner; the plots of these stories, and the musical, explore ethnic and cutural prejudice, a theme whose treatment underwent changes during the musical’s evolution. This study concerns the musico-dramatic evolution of South Pacific, a previously unexplored process revealing the collaborative interaction of two masters at the peak of their creative powers. It also demonstrates the authors’ gradual softening of the show’s social commentary. The structural changes, observable through sketches found in the papers of Rodgers and Hammerstein, show how the team developed their characterizations through musical styles, making changes that often indicate changes in characters’ psychological states; they also reveal changing approaches to the musicalization of the novel. Studying these changes provides intimate and, occasionally, unexpected insights into Rodgers and Hammerstein’s creative methods. -

Lindsay's central themes are introduced in a study of the man and his work. (Ch. 1). These themes are found to be common in allegorical dream fantasy, the phenomen- ological background of which is established (Ch. 2). A distinction can then be drawn between fantasy and romance, so as to define allegorical dream fantasy as a literary mode (Ch. 3). After the biographical, theoretical and literary backgrounds of A Voyage have been established in the first three chapters, the second three chapters explicate the structure of the book as an allegorical dream fantasy. -

Agnieszka Izdebska Department of Theory of Literature University of Łódź Polish Novel in the 20th Century This text is not a compendium of knowledge about Polish novel in the 20th century. It is rather a kind of brief guide not only through Pol- ish novel, prose, literature but also through Polish culture of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. My intention is rather to point some phe- nomena, names, books, personalities – not to provide complete (whatever it means) history of Polish novel of that time. The stress is put on two literary periods: the Interwar Years and the contemporary literature in this text. There are few reasons of that. First of all the Interwar Years were the most fruitful ones in Polish history and there were a lot of fabulous figures and texts worth mentioning. Moreover the roots of modern Polish culture, literature and novel itself can be traced in that period. Furthermore, the years after the World War I was the time of emerging of new states in Europe and establishing a new political status quo. So for many readers Polish culture and literature of those times could be easily compared with historical situations of their countries. As far as contemporary Polish literature is concerned, I just find it the most inter- esting for young foreign readers. I also write about Polish popular novels – fantasy literature and detective stories because this kind of reader might become interested. * * * 312 Agnieszka Izdebska In the 20th century realistic novel formula as the only effective one was exhausted. The Myth of Atlantis in the 19th Century: Science and Imagination Chantal Foucrier Unlike the great heroic myths of antiquity, which have been forgotten or are little known to the general public, the myth of Atlantis still calls out to us. Over the centuries this collective history of the conjectural past of the Earth and humanity has assumed a vocation to reflect the political, religious, moral and intellectual changes of Western societies. In vain does one search for the sunken island: each discovers it where he or she hopes to find it. As Thomas-Henri Martin stated in 1841: ‘[Atlantis] belongs to another realm, which is not in the domain of space but rather that of thought.’1 Few people dared, at that time, to put forward such certainties, thus denigrating the growing enthusiasm for the mystery and controversy that originate in Plato’s Timaeus and Critias. The nineteenth century is, as such, an important observatory in terms of interpreting Atlantology, a polymorphic literature whose outlines were precisely and permanently drawn at that time. Reserved, until then, for erudite comment and philosophical-historical reconstructions of prehistory, literary production now invested two distinct territories. On the one hand, science, with its advances and methodologies, multiplied assumptions about the veracity of the myth. On the other, imaginative literature laid claim to the search for Atlantis in its own way by exploiting the incompleteness of the Greek myth, its symbols and dramatic storyline. Nevertheless, the two approaches became intertwined in many ways and this is what I propose to study, taking into account the many changes that came about in the course of the century, including the growth of travel to distant lands, which introduced new cultural horizons to Western thought and other ways of approaching the world’s origins. -

Race is the lens of identity in the South Pacific adaptation process analysis, which starts with the 1947 novel, Tales o f the South Pacific, and includes the original 1949 Broadway musical, the 1958 Hollywood movie, and the 2008 Broadway revival. Gender is the lens in the adaptation process analysis of Mister Roberts, which starts with the 1946 novel, Mister Roberts, and includes the original 1948 Broadway play and the 1955 Hollywood movie, both by the same name as the novel. -
