  • Fun with Foodella
Fun with Foodella Fun with Foodella is a nutrition education activity book designed for second grade students. This is the second major revision of the original Food Fun with Foodella, which was undertaken as a pilot project by seven South Dakota elementary school teachers in the summer of 1975 to strengthen nutrition education for students at the second grade level. The first revision occurred in 1992. This revision and reprinting was initiated at the prompting of elementary teachers who had previously used the workbook in their classes. The 2006 Fun with Foodella follows the updated food guidance system known as MyPyramid introduced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2005. Using the Teacher’s Guide The Fun with Foodella Teacher’s Guide provides the objectives and directions for each unit of the Fun with Foodella workbook. The directions include the background information necessary to teach each unit. Also, for each unit, additional ideas/activities are provided to further enhance and reinforce the student’s learning. Please be aware that by nature websites and web addresses change over the course of time. Hopefully we have provided enough background with each website given that you will be able to find additional information as necessary. 1 Acknowledgements The researching, writing and graphics necessary to move Fun with Foodella into the electronic age as well as make it compatible with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPyramid, involved time and input from a myriad of people. It involved individuals from the South Dakota departments of Health and Education, South Dakota State University, Lower Brule Community College and the private sector.

MiddleSession 2017 February 28, March 21, March 22 Sports of Russia and Eastern Europe Trs. Dan C and Patrick DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?! If by “miracles” you mean exploring the popular, hockey-like sports of Russia and Eastern Europe, Tr. Patrick and Tr. Dan sure do. In our middlesession group, we will learn about the “Miracle on Ice,” try out feet at ice skating, figure out and play bandy and floorball, and possibly invent our own hybrid-sport! And we’ll eat some nice food! Eastern European Folk Dance and Song Trs. Heather and Jonathan Stand up and dance! Open your mouth and sing! Come learn a variety of folk dances from different Eastern European countries. From Macedonian line dances to Czech polkas, we will explore a wide variety of dance styles. To rest our feet periodically, we will learn some traditional songs from different countries in this region, as well as learning a bit about the different countries where these dances and songs originated. We will even have one or two workshops with local dancers and musicians! Eastern European Folktale Fun Trs. Maureen and Laurie Who are the Baba Yaga, Kikimora, and Vodyanoy? In this course, you’ll learn about these and other famous characters from Eastern European folktales. You’ll explore their stories, uncover what the stories reveal about Eastern European culture, and create your own folktale-inspired project. You could choose to create a board game starring Russian fairy tale villains and heroes, a graphic novel or movie adaptation of a Ukrainian folktale, or anything else you can imagine! We’ll also visit the University of Pennsylvania to learn from an Eastern European folklore expert.

  • It Really Brightens up Hearty Vegetables, Like Broccolini, and Something Magical Happens When It’S Combined with All That Sauteed Garlic
And thank you for the support! A zine is about the here and now. As I am typing this we are seven months into the pandemic. The restaurant has been open for a bit, mostly for delivery. We have a little outdoor seating, in the form of a few hijacked parking spots out front. There are tables up and down the block and people don’t mind much. That’s how things are now. The city is allowing some indoor dining, but we won’t be doing that any time soon. But let’s go back a few decades for the back back story... Since the 80s, I’ve been cooking vegan food in Brooklyn as a way to bring people together. In the form of feminist potlucks or hosting brunches at any of the two dozen apartments I’ve lived in all over the borough. Feeding people in the park through volunteer organizations, or at fur-free Friday in the 90s. Even just cooking some latkes for my family at Hannukah. Really, any opportunity to serve people vegan food and I’m in. So having a vegan restaurant in Brooklyn, just a few blocks from where my grandfather grew up actually, was a natural culmination of passion, community and a sense of duty. A few years ago, when I was well into my forties, I was lucky enough to partner with Sara and Erica, whose family also has had ties to the neighborhood for decades and who also just want everyone to eat vegan. Well, great! A meal is born..
