LIST OF CANADIAN GUNSMITHS FROM 1650 TO 1900 LONDON GUNSMITHS FROM 1850 TO 1900 Copyright 1986 FOREWARD The English portion of this listing was originally complied by the London Gun Makers Association as an up date to Col. Hawkers list that stopped In 1850. To that extent it Is successful; however the researcher should note that when using the list to establish dates of operation for a particular firm, care should be exercised for a couple of reasons. One reason is that the list begins with 1850 and ends at 1900. When these 2 dates appear along with the firms listing it does not mean that the firm began operations In 1850 (although some may have) nor does a final date of 1900 mean that a firm ended its operations In that year, ali it says is that these are the beginning and ending dates of the list itself. Another problem is that some firms did not always list themselves in the London Directory each year; ap parently some firms did not feel the need to do so with the result that there may be gaps in years of operation. However with all that said the list of London Gun Makers Is stili the only reliable listing of firms in business during that time ever created.
