POSSEVINO'S PROBABLE JEWISH ANCESTRY Contrary to the attitudes of many Spaniards, indeed of many Christians of his time, Ignatius of Loyola was entirely without racial anti-Semitism. His desire to be conformed to Christ in the tiniest details even led him to regret he was not born of Jewish blood. During its formative era, unlike many reli gious orders of the sixteenth century, the Society of Jesus welcomed Chris tians of Jewish descent into its ranks. As is well known, some of Loyola's closest collaborators were of Jewish descent, for instance, Diego Lainez and l Juan Polanco . Many other Jesuits of Jewish descent made notable con 2 tributions, particularly in the foreign missions • It has not been noticed by scholars that Antonio Possevino (1533-1611), a famous figure in the second generation of Jesuit history, was probably born of Jewish Christian ancestry3. His probable Jewish descent seell1S to have affected his later Jesuit career at various stages. His autobiography, which was written for publication but remains in manuscript, says nothing about any Jewish background. Portier This dissertation examines the theological work of John Hugo by looking at its roots within the history of Ignatian spirituality, as well as within various nature-grace debates in Christian history. It also attempts to situate Hugo within the historical context of early twentieth-century Catholicism and America, particularly the period surrounding the Second World War. John Hugo (1911-1985) was a priest from Pittsburgh who is perhaps best known as Dorothy Day‟s spiritual director and leader of “the retreat” she memorialized in The Long Loneliness. Throughout much of American Catholic scholarship, Hugo‟s theology has been depicted as rigorist and even labeled as Jansenist, yet it was embraced by and had a great influence upon Day and many others. -

Benedictus Pererius (1535–1610) published in 1576 his most successful book De principiis, after he had taught philosophy at the Roman College of the Jesuits. It will be shown that parts of this book are actually based on his lectures. But the printed version was intended as a contribution to the debate within his Order on how science should be conceived. Pererius redefined the meaning of scientific speculation to the effect that metaphysics was split into ontology and natural theology, and that further speculative sciences, such as physics, gained their own competence. Throughout this book, as well as in his warning against magic and in his commentaries on the Bible, the Jesuit addresses Renaissance strains of neo-Platonism, Aristotelianism, and syncretism. Sometimes one can tell a book from its cover: On the principles and properties common to all natural things (De Communibus omnium rerum naturalium Principiis et Affectionibus). The title of the best known book by the Jesuit Benedictus Pererius (1535–1610)1 tells the reader of the late 16th century that the author was determined to compete with Renaissance natural philoso- phers, because the title echoes recent books in natural philosophy such as Bernardino Telesio’s anti-Aristotelian De rerum natura iuxta propria principia (started to be published in 1565) or that of Pietro Pomponazzi: De naturalium effectuum causis sive de incantationibus (written in 1520, printed a.o. -

Achille Gagliardi and the Northern Mystics
chapter 4 Achille Gagliardi and the Northern Mystics Rob Faesen, S.J. This contribution begins by briefly presenting the life and works of Achille Gagliardi (1537–1607). It then focuses on his Breve compendio di perfezione cristiana (Short compendium of Christian perfection), a brief text published anonymously (first in French translation in 1596, and then in Italian in 1611), and the most interesting of all his works owing to its complex history. In 1937, it was attributed to Isabella Berinzaga (d.1624), but it is now considered to be the work of Gagliardi, albeit inspired by his contacts with Berinzaga. Although the text was widely published and translated, even into Arabic, and was thus profoundly influential (e.g., on Pierre de Bérulle [1575–1629]), its orthodoxy was not always beyond dispute. The central themes are clearly connected to the mystics of northern Europe, such as Marguerite Porete (c.1250–1310) and John of Ruusbroec (1293–1381). These themes were transmitted across Europe by the popular Institutiones Taulerianae, which contains much material from the northern authors under the “umbrella” of John Tauler (c.1300–61). 1 Achille Gagliardi’s Life and Works1 Achille Gagliardi was born in Padua in 1537 (or 1538), the eldest son of Ludovico Gagliardi, a nobleman of Padua who died at the age of twenty-eight, and Girolama Camplongo (d.1558).2 He entered the Society of Jesus in Rome on September 29, 1559. Some years earlier, he had befriended Antonio Posse- vino (1533–1611), who likewise entered the order. Two of his younger brothers, Leonetto (d.1564) and Ludovico (d.1608), also became Jesuits. -

Catholic Censorship and the Demise of Knowledge Production in Early Modern Italy Fabio Blasutto1 David de la Croix2 July 28, 2021 Abstract Censorship makes new ideas less available to others, but also reduces the share of people choosing a non-compliant activity. We propose a new method to measure the effect of censorship on knowledge growth, accounting for the endogenous selection of agents into compliant vs. non-compliant ideas. We apply our method to the Catholic Church's censorship of books written by members of Italian universities and academies over the period 1400-1750. We highlight two new facts: once censorship was introduced, censored authors were of better quality than the non-censored authors, but this gap shrunk over time, and the intensity of censorship decreased over time. These facts are used to identify the deep parameters of a novel endogenous growth model linking censorship to knowledge diffusion and occupational choice. We conclude that censorship reduced by 30% the average log publication per scholar in Italy. Interestingly, half of this drop stems from the induced reallocation of talents towards compliant activities, while the other half arises from the direct effect of censorship on book availability. The more one knows about the author of this “Commentary on the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius,” Achille Gagliardi (1537–1607), the more two questions will arise for any reader: first, how far is he faithful to the text of Ignatius, but second, what does his commentary reveal about himself. It should be made clear from the start that in fact this volume contains two works of Gagliardi: in addition to the “Commentary” there is a second work, almost as long as the first and also on the Exercises, entitled “On the discernment of spirits.” Both questions can be raised about both works. Gagliardi was famous in his day for his outstanding sanctity and fame as a spiritual director. However, while professor in Rome, he had led a delegation to Pope Gregory xiii to complain about the way the Jesuit superior general, Everard Mercurian, was running the Society of Jesus—with excessive stress on secular education—and asking for reform. In spite of this, Gagliardi was appointed rector in several North Italian houses and became a close collabo- rator of St. -

Repertorium Eruditorum Totius Europae - RETE (2021) 3:19–26 19 https://doi.org/10.14428/rete.v3i0/Gregorian Licence CC BY-SA 4.0 Scholars and Literati at the Gregorian University in Rome (1551–1773) David de la Croix Soraya Karioun IRES/LIDAM, UCLouvain This note is a summary description of the set of scholars and literati who taught at the Jesuit University in Rome (Roman College - Gregorian University) from its inception in 1551 to the sup- pression of the Society of Jesus in 1773. 1 The University The rst incarnation of this University, the Roman College (Collegio Romano) was founded by Ig- natius of Loyola in 1551. It was one of the rst and most important Jesuit colleges. Described as a school of grammar, humanities and Christian doctrine (Scuola di grammatica, d’umanità e di dot- trina cristiana), the College was open to all and it provided general courses at no cost. Due to its erudite professors, the quality of its courses and its exceptional students, the College ourished and quickly outgrew its campus. In 1584 Pope Gregory XIII sought to enlarge the College and a perma- nent building was constructed. From there, with higher enrolment and an increase in the number of courses it oered, the Roman College matured as an institution of higher education. It was re- named the Gregorian University in honour of its generous benefactor. In the seventeenth century, the Gregorian University was the spearhead of the Counter-Reformation and the promoter of tradi- tional Aristotelian science against the new approaches developed during the Scientic Revolution (Minois 2014).
