Introduction Everybody have it, you couldn’t survive without it and you almost certainly carry it around with you in the most moments of your life. The answer is quite easy and you just have to take a look into your wallet. It’s your money, your identity-card and, or your passport. The first question answered on this report is: Is the production of new identity-cards and new bank-notes actually necessary? The superficial answer is: Of course, many people are born every day and when they are old enough they need an identity card, and yes, the economy needs million of new bank-notes per year. This question is fast to be answered but it raises a lot of new questions. Why does the government needs millions of new bank- notes per year? Isn’t there enough money in circulation? What about inflation when more and more money is produced? And who produces the money? Is it the government which tune in a big machine in the cellar of the government building when they need some bank- notes or is it a private company? And if it’s a private company how do they offer the money? Like in a supermarket where you can buy a bundle of 1.000 fifty pound-notes and where just the government can go into? At the one hand it’s the intend of this project report to describe the companies which are responsible for developing and producing the bank-notes and ID-documents for Germany and England. At the other hand it’s the intend to compare these companies and to find out what are the conformities and what are the differences of them. This project-report is divided into three parts. It starts with a introduction of the companies which play a main role in this report: the Bundesdruckerei GmbH and DeLaRue. This in- troduction encompasses a short company-profile, a history-abstract of the company and an overview of their products – the product-portfolio. The next chapter includes informa- tion about what is similar or even equal and what is definitely different between the Bun- desdruckerei and DeLaRue. The project-report ends in a conclusion which comprises and repeats the main facts of the project-report. 4 2. The Bundesdruckerei GmbH 2.1 Company Profil Bundesdruckerei GmbH is one of the leading companies in high security printing, headquartered in Berlin Kreuzberg. Together with its subsidiaries Maurer Electronics GmbH and D-Trust, with locations in Hanover, Munich and Hamburg, it covers the entire process from capture of personal data to the production of ID documents. Furthermore, part of the portfolio of the Bundesdruckerei is the value-printing like printing of euro banknotes, revenue stamps and postage stamps, and publishing systems. Major international projects are covered by the BIS Bundesdruckerei International Services GmbH, founded by the Bundesdruckerei. In 2008 the Bundesdruckerei employs 1,454 people at all locations. Revenue in 2009 was at 311 Million Euros, which is an increase of 6% from the previous year. The following overview shows the most important key dates of 2008 and 2007: 5 2.2 Historie At the end of the 19th century the chief of the Reichs post and telegraphing office, Heinrich von Stephan, bought the Deckersche Oberhofbuchdruckerei and founded the Reichsdruckerei to build up an agency for security printing. After that he con- solidated the new printing agency with the effective royal-prussion printing office in Berlin. The Reichsdruckerei started with printing the first Berlin telephone directory in 1881. The next years the Reichdruckerei became the best printing company for copied works of art. Furthermore, the production of post stamps started in 1890. Until the 2 nd World War the company was growing. During the war the whole prem- ises were distroyed by bombs. Despite all the problems due the “blockade” of West-Berlin between 1946 and 1949, it was especially important for the Magistrate of the City Berlin, to build up the buildings and production lines to start the bill pro- duktion for the currency reform in West-Germany. Because of the stressed political situation between the allied victorious powers in the West and Russia in the East, the administration units of the "Combined Eco- nomic Area" decided to build up a second state-owned printing company in the safe west and the location in Berlin lost the public orders. But everything changed after the Federal Republic of Germany was founded. The central administration went over to Berlin and the Bundesdruckerei was born. The next years were very effective again, due the need of banknotes for the raising West-Germany. Until 1989 the Bundesdruckerei stood in the shadow of the Berlin Wall. After the fall and the reunion of Germany there were a lot of orders for new banknotes and also ID cards for the citizien in the East part of Germany. In 1991 the company delivered 15 million ID-Cards. Because of the raising production the administration decided to build a new, high-security vault never seen before in Europe. In 1994 Bundesdruckerei was converted to an private company by the German Government, which was the shareholder further on. In the middle of 1994 the Bundesdruckerei became a full private limited company with a new focus on ID documents, the reason for the later foundation of D-Trust GmbH and aquisition of Maurer Electronics GmbH. Three years later the company got another success: the EU driving licence and the whole logistic process was taken over to Berlin and also the “First Page Data Base” patent information program was builded up due a joint venture of The 6 United States Patent and Trademak Office and experts from the Bundesdruckerei. Since 2002 the Bundesdruckerei prints the euro banknotes for Germany. Therefor a complete new productino line with new security standarts was build up. Further- more, experts created an entire process chain for the new German ePassport, from the enrolment application to the personalitsation and verification at border control points. 2010, due the changed security interrest of the German government, the Bundes- druckerei was bought back by Federal Republic of Germany as a private com- pany. 2.3 Products & Solutions Next to the security printing are complete ID-Systems the core business of the Bundesdruckerei.
