FROM THE PRODUCERS ...

We saw "DAMESAT SEA" performed in Hawaii many years ago, and fell in love with it. We agreed that. if ever given the chance, we would produce the show. West Valley Light Opera gave us the chance, and wejumped at it. "DAMESAT SEA" is a take-off on the 1930 Bubsy Berkeley musical extravaganzas. If you notice a little bit of Dick Powell, and Joan Blondell in some of the performers, don't worry ...you're all right. It's a little bit of fluff...a little meaningless fun from all thewonderful people who gave us all the wonderful "little bits of fluff' way back then. Sit back and enjoy...laugh when you want to...applaud when you want to, and ifyou feel alump forming in your throat. think ofit as just a memory of good times gone by. Cele &> Gene Pincus

Peter Wilderman, Tammy Nelson, James A. Tiltman BRIEN TIMOTIIY MAHONEY- Lucky When it comes to theater, this young man has almost done it all. He has choreographed "Fiddler on the Roof', "Anything Goes", "Godspell", "Sugar", "Grease", "Annie" and 6 Dance Concerts between 1979 and 1985. He has danced in "Barnum", "Pippin", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", "Marne", "Cabaret" ... and the list goes on and on. Brien has studied dancing with Arthur Murray, Benny Smith, Gail Benedict. Mary Ann Norris and Marie Stinnett He has performed in "AVisit to a Small Planet", "Plaza Suite", "The Crucible" and "Bus Stop". If that's not enough, in his spare time he is becoming a gourmet cook. And, Brien was pleasantly surprised In this show. He says this Is the first time he has had a costume to fit his lanky frame ... before opening night, that Is.

DON SCOTI - Hennesey The versatile Mr. Scott has worked with many theatre groups In this area. His experience Includes the first production to grace the stage at the Saratoga Civic Theatre in 1965. He played one of his favorite roles, that ofBlff, In "Death of a Salesman". Due to extreme perseverance and hard work, he earned promotions from Ensign (Pulver), In the San Jose Theater Guild's 1961 production of "Mr. Roberts", all the way to Captain In last year's production of the same shor.vbyThe Community Players. Don has also appeared In ''How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying", and "Kiss Me Kate", for WVLO, as well as "Guys and Dolls", "Funny Girl", ''The Boy Friend" and "Fiddler on the Roof' for other local groups. Don has directed ''The Crucible", "The Diary of Anne Frank", "Ttme Out for Ginger", "Harvey", and "The Philadelphia Story". In real life, Don spends his days teaching Film Literature and English at Los Gatos High School.

BOB MILLS - The Captain After being one of the Muleteers In "Man of La Mancha", the sheriff in "Showboat", a gangster in "Sugar", and the bartender in "My Fair Lady", Bob Is playtng his first major role as the lovable Captain in this production. Actually, this is Bob's seventh show for us. He has the honor of being the only performer to have been awarded the Captain's Cape more than once. Bob and his lovely wife Irene live in Santa Clara He was recently elected to the Board of Directors and vows to keep WVLO the best community theater group in Northern California

THE GIRLS IN THE BAND Front row: Nancy We1chly, Diane Reynolds Back Row: Wanda Saxton, Elly Weiser MARGIE IANG - Mona Kent This vivacious performer is a newcomer to WVLOand we are very glad she joined us as the star of "Dames At Sea". Our lovely "Mona" is a native of the Bay Area and has a multitude of credits as performer, choreographer, director and producer. You might say Margie really knows theatre from the ground up, having founded a successful theatrical group in Alameda known as the Cabaret Theatre. Married and mother of two sons, Margie owns and operates her own secretarial service in Fremont. She has most recently been seen in the SDG production of 'The Boys From Syracuse" and was the featured soloist with the San Jose Symphony Band in their "Pops" concert last year in Los Gatos.

WILLIAMS, WILSON - Dick Scott. or Scotty, or William or AH .. or Bill, or Hey You, as his mother calls him, returns once again to our stage, tripping over the lights, fantastically, You saw him, hopefulJy, in our production of "Sugar", looking tremulously at the daybed, and, most recently in WVLO's last production of "My Fair Lady", looking awesomely at Eliza He is a tireless performer, a wonderful dancer, and a marvelous actor. Just ask him ... hell tell you, Actually, his ambition is STILL to become a mild-mannered reporter for a major metropolitan newspaper. We have sent his resume to the Daily Planet, and hope to hear from them before this show year is over. There are quite a few of us in WVLOthat have seen him develop from his 1971 role as a child in "Fiddler on the Roof', to the polished performer he is today. Bring back the old days!!!

CHRISSIE SALANDRO - Ruby Another newcomer to WVLO, Chrissie, all 19 years of her, has survived the plight of being the "Middle Child", and is attending West Valley College, where she played the role of Bonnie in their production of "Anything Goes". She has also performed for various local community theatre groups in "Bye Bye Birdie", "Annie Get Your Gun", and ''WIzard of Oz". In her spare time, Chrissie likes the out-of-doors, especially water skiing. She confesses to a fondness for cooking Chinese Food. Chrtsste intends to transfer to the University of California at Los Angeles, where she plans to study Theater Arts.

PATTI D. FORD - Joan This is Patti's fourth appearance with WVLO, having been seen in "Flower Drum Song", 'West Side Story" and "Marne", Patti's experience began at the ripe old age of 3. From then on, it's been stardom with years and years of dancing lessons, and finally, her big break: meeting Barbara Valente. She and Barbara have been a "team" for the past five years, having choreographed shows forWVLO, and other theater groups, i.e. Saratoga Drama Group, Gaslighter Theater, in Campbell, and Theaterworks, in Palo Alto. Her experience also includes the production of videos with "Tele-Theater Presents". Patti has also worked with Dennis Sakamoto in his recent production of "Magic Christmas". Patti is married to Byron Westlund, an excellent performer in his own right. They have a unique arrangement, he does the cooking, and she does the auto repairs. BILL STARR - Director Bill is making his debut with WVLOas director of "Dames At Sea". He brings 27 years of professional theater experience with him, and a wealth of talent. Bill performed with Ann-Margret In the TV special of "Dames At Sea". He Is proud ofthe fact that he has worked with some of the best known names In theater: Hal Prince, Josh Logan, Bob Fosse, Michael Bennett and Tommy Tune.just to name a few. He was Gene Kelly's assistant In for the movie "Hello Dolly". He directed and choreographed a capsule version of "Oklahoma" for the White House. In the same capacity, he worked with Tony Bennett at the Hilton Hotel. Born and raised In San Francisco, he graduated from Menlo-Atherton High - ~I School. Bill now resides In Menlo Park with his wife and two --~ children. Ask Bill to relate a few stories of professional theater and you will be In for a few hours of fascinating enjoyment. Watch for Bill In a new George Lucas movie, "Howard, The Duck". due to open this Fall. Welcome aboard, Bill.

BARBARA VALENI'E - Choreographer The ever popular Barbara Valente, who can make even the most stilted performer move like Fred Astalre himself, has once again. shown her ; expertise In the field of choreography, That expertise stems from . an extensive background of dance training in Northern California. and Canada For our movers and dancers in community theater, It is an experience they don't soon forget. Her credits with WVLOinclude "Unsinkable Molly Brown", ''Kiss Me Kate", "Flower Drum Song" and 'West Side Story", Recently, she staged an original revue of Jeny Herman songs, "Tune The Grand Up", for a San Francisco cabaret theater, It is still playing to packed houses, and is the longest running show in San Francisco at this time, We are extremely thankful that Barbara ' has given us so much of her valuable time. although she admits "Dames At Sea" is one of her all time favorite shows, WANDA SAXTON - Music Director Wanda's most recent WVLO production was as Music Director and show pianist for last season's production of "Some Enchanted Evening". Now, after a short respite, she's as happy to be back with us as we are with her. Wanda Is once again doing double duty. As stated above, she is the MUSicDirector, and she can also be seen In the "pit" as electronic keyboard artist. When not Involved in theater, Wanda is "THE" art department at Talbot Tours, Inc. Through Wanda. WVLOhas attracted loyal supporters in the form of busloads of Senior Citizens taking one-day trips to see our productions. A hearty welcome to the "Talbot Tourers", and a welcome back to Wanda. Incidentally, the youngest member of her family is her one-and-a-half year old granddaughter, who already loves to dance and sing ... in her own little way.

DIANE REYNOLDS - Choral ~irector For Diane, being on stage as a lady bass is her secret ambi tion. For the time being, though, she has skillfully brought the cast of "Dames At Sea" up to the vocal excellence that we wanted. She has played for auditions, rehearsals and performances, most recently on stage as one of the two pianists In the Roger's lJ1> Hammrstein revue, "Some Enchanted Evening". Affectionately known as "Sarge", since our production of "Sugar", Diane Is known as a tireless worker in the field of Choral Direction. She studied music at Long Beach and Fullerton Colleges. Her talented children are following in her footsteps, with son Rick, who was the MUSicDirector in WVLO's last production "My Fair Lady", and Robin, who has been seen in probably all ofWVLO's 60 some-odd productions, even though she Is still a teenager. A LITTLE THING LIKE A REHEARSING HALL ... You'd think a rehearsing hall wouldn't be so hard to find. WVLOAhas been producing shows for over 22 years. They MUST have rehearsed SOMEWHERE ..• That's true, of course. We had been rehearsing at schools in the Saratoga School District. But, all of a sudden, after paying $3.00 an hour for many years, the fee was raised to $10.00 an hour. That's out of our reach, out of our sight, and out of our budget.

50-0-0-0-0 ...

What do we do? We are at that famous place called "Wit's End".

It's a problem fellow theatre-goers. WVLOAdraws performers from all over the South Bay, the East Bay, the Peninsula. Santa cruz and Gilroy. When we did "Annie", we had one of the members of the cast come down from San Francisco. A centralized place would be nice, but, at this paint, we'll take almost anything anywhere down here.

THE SITUATION HAS BECOME DESPERATE It! WE NEED YOUR HELP It!

Isn't there someone out there who has a warehouse someplace that's not being used at night? We need about 60 feet by 40 feet. The company has liability insurance and we would be more than happy to make you an ••ADDITIONALINSURED". All we require is 3 hours a night during the week. with rest room facilities and a place to make coffee. Enough parking for about 15-20 cars. We'll even bring in our own piano. A FREE half page ad in our programs will be thrown in as a part of the deal. If there are any questions, or if you have such a place, please call Gene Pincus at 257- 7951, or Ed Hand at 356-7340. Thank You.
