Hemidactylus frenatus, H. garnotii, and Lepidodactylus lugubris are considered introduced to all island groups included in this comparison and therefore are not included below. This list represents a conservative estimate of the true native reptile diversity within each island group as we did not include currently undescribed taxa, and considered a species introduced if a previous worker indicated the distribution was likely the result of an introduction and provided supporting data. Endemic species have a distribution restricted to a single archipelago. We used published literature (published prior to 1 August 2008), personal field observations, and unpublished molecular data to develop this list; the primary source(s) for each record is included with the record and references are provided below the table. Recent genetic studies have identified the New Caledonian scincid genus Lioscincus to be polyphyletic, comprising four distinct evolutionary lineages which we recognize at the generic level. The revised concept of Lioscincus s.s. now includes only the type species Lioscincus steindachneri Bocage, 1873 and the recently described Lioscincus vivae Sadlier, Bauer, Whitaker & Smith, 2004. The three remaining lineages identified are:Leiolopisma tillieri Ineich & Sadlier, 1991 and Lioscincus maruia Sadlier, Whitaker & Bauer, 1998 for which the genus Phasmasaurus gen. nov. is proposed; Lygosoma (Mocoa) nigrofasciolatus Peters, 1869 and Leiolopisma greeri Böhme, 1979 for which the genus Epibator gen. nov. is proposed; and Lygosoma (Leiolopisma) novaecaledoniae Parker, 1926 for which the genus Caesoris gen. nov. is proposed. Each of these genera is diagnosed by a suite of morphological apomorphies which in combination is unique within the Eugongylus group of skinks of which each is a member. -

FAUNA of AUSTRALIA 26. BIOGEOGRAPHY AND PHYLOGENY OF THE SQUAMATA Mark N. Hutchinson & Stephen C. Donnellan 26. BIOGEOGRAPHY AND PHYLOGENY OF THE SQUAMATA This review summarises the current hypotheses of the origin, antiquity and history of the order Squamata, the dominant living reptile group which comprises the lizards, snakes and worm-lizards. The primary concern here is with the broad relationships and origins of the major taxa rather than with local distributional or phylogenetic patterns within Australia. In our review of the phylogenetic hypotheses, where possible we refer principally to data sets that have been analysed by cladistic methods. Analyses based on anatomical morphological data sets are integrated with the results of karyotypic and biochemical data sets. A persistent theme of this chapter is that for most families there are few cladistically analysed morphological data, and karyotypic or biochemical data sets are limited or unavailable. Biogeographic study, especially historical biogeography, cannot proceed unless both phylogenetic data are available for the taxa and geological data are available for the physical environment. Again, the reader will find that geological data are very uncertain regarding the degree and timing of the isolation of the Australian continent from Asia and Antarctica. In most cases, therefore, conclusions should be regarded very cautiously. The number of squamate families in Australia is low. Five of approximately fifteen lizard families and five or six of eleven snake families occur in the region; amphisbaenians are absent. Opinions vary concerning the actual number of families recognised in the Australian fauna, depending on whether the Pygopodidae are regarded as distinct from the Gekkonidae, and whether sea snakes, Hydrophiidae and Laticaudidae, are recognised as separate from the Elapidae. -

The history of cicada family classification is reviewed and the current status of all previously proposed families and subfamilies summarized. All tribal rankings associated with the Australian fauna are similarly documented. A cladistic analysis of generic relationships has been used to test the validity of currently held views on family and subfamily groupings. The analysis has been based upon an exhaustive study of nymphal and adult morphology, including both external and internal adult structures, and the first comparative study of male and female internal reproductive systems is included. Only two families are justified, the Tettigarctidae and Cicadidae. The latter are here considered to comprise three subfamilies, the Cicadinae, Cicadettinae n.stat. (= Tibicininae auct.) and the Tettigadinae (encompassing the Tibicinini, Platypediidae and Tettigadidae). Of particular note is the transfer of Tibicina Amyot, the type genus of the subfamily Tibicininae, to the subfamily Tettigadinae. The subfamily Plautillinae (containing only the genus Plautilla) is now placed at tribal rank within the Cicadinae. The subtribe Ydiellaria is raised to tribal rank. The American genus Magicicada Davis, previously of the tribe Tibicinini, now falls within the Taphurini. Three new tribes are recognized within the Australian fauna, the Tamasini n.tribe to accommodate Tamasa Distant and Parnkalla Distant, Jassopsaltriini n.tribe to accommodate Jassopsaltria Ashton and Burbungini n.tribe to accommodate Burbunga Distant. -

Among these invaders, the red-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) is currently expanding towards the north of the main island. -

MOULDS Invertebrate Zoology Division, Australian Museum, 6 College Street, Sydney NSW 2010, Australia [email protected] ABSTRACT. The cicada genus Abricta Stål currently contains a heterogeneous group of species which is considered best divided into four genera. Abricta sensu str. includes only A. brunnea (Fabricius) and A. ferruginosa (Stål) which are confined to Mauritius and neighbouring islands. The monotypic genus Chrysolasia n.gen., is proposed for a single Guatemalan species, A. guatemalena (Distant). Another monotypic genus, Aleeta n.gen., is proposed for the species A. curvicosta (Germar) from eastern Australia. Fourteen Australian species are placed in Tryella n.gen.: castanea Distant, noctua Distant, rubra Goding & Froggatt, stalkeri Distant, willsi Distant, adela n.sp., burnsi n.sp., crassa n.sp., graminea n.sp., infuscata n.sp., kauma n.sp., lachlani n.sp., occidens n.sp. and ochra n.sp. The five remaining species currently placed in Abricta (borealis Goding & Froggatt, burgessi Distant, cincta Fabricius and occidentalis Goding & Froggatt from Australia plus pusilla Fabricius of unknown locality) do not belong to Abricta or closely allied genera. Cladistic analyses place C. guatemalena basally on all trees. The Mauritian genus Abricta sensu str., and the genera, Abroma Stål and Monomatapa Distant, form a sister group to all Australian species. There is strong evidence suggesting that Abricta and Abroma are synonymous. Keys to genera and species and maps of distribution are provided. -

Considering the extent to which cats are valued as pets, it is not surprising that they have since been translocated by humans to almost all parts of the world. Notable predators, cats threaten native birdlife and other fauna, especially on islands where native species have evolved in relative isolation from predators. view this species on IUCN Red List Species Description Felis catus is a small animal in the wild (up to 5kg, but more commonly 1.5 -3.0kg) but may be considerably heavier when domesticated. Colour is extremely variable in domesticated varieties and feral cats commonly revert to black, tabby or tortoiseshell with varying extents of white starting from the belly and breast. On the Australian continent they inhabit forests and woodland habitats in eastern, western and northern parts of the country (Dickman 1996). On Hahajima Island, Japan, feral cats have been observed widely in various kinds of habitats, including primary forests (Kawakami and Higuchi 2002).
