That sounds like the title of a long, erudite and mind-numbing book! I'm going to try to answer the question in a few hundred words and I will make them as non-theological and 'non-party' as possible. So here goes.... Firstly, who or what is 'the Church'. Well for our purpose, it`s the group of Christian people who meet regularly or occasionally as the congregations of All Saints Vendée. Somebody is going to ask 'who are Christians'; again, for our purpose, the same group of people! There are, of course, many talents given to people by God to do different jobs - administrators, musicians, cooks, worship leaders and so forth, but, there is only one type of Christian, none are more senior or important than others in God's eyes - the word 'minister' means a servant. They can be members of any church that proclaims 'Jesus is Lord' - or none. We can probably identify at least four different tasks that the Church is 'for' : Worshipping and glorifying God - we do this when we meet together for our Sunday services, when we pray or read the Bible in our own home and, perhaps most importantly, when we put our Christian love into action by serving others as described below. Meeting together for mutual support and encouragement, 'fellowship' is the word often used for this, and it can be in a church service or a bible study group, a quiz evening or that lovely evening we had for the St Andrew's Ceilidh. It can also be something quite informal like a meal together in somebody's home or going out shopping, walking, playing golf or whatever you do together. Caring for those who need care, and if you want a list go to the Parable of the Goats and Sheep (Matthew 25 vv 31-46) and add a few more for modern life. We are often quite good at doing this within our own congregation and amongst our local neighbours, in fact, I would think the presence of the church is of considerable comfort to expats who are not part of it - they know that there is a group of people who will care about, and often for them, in times of stress and anxiety. In the wider world? Sometimes our response to the needs of suffering humanity is either very piecemeal or even one of despair that the task is overwhelming; maybe so, but you can empty a bucket eventually with a teaspoon! Churchwide support for one or two charities is probably the best approach remembering that we can give of our '3 TS' - Treasure, Time and Talent. Most of you contribute financially, many of you contribute your time and talents, but is there a little more you could do - not necessarily giving money, but 'adding value' using your time and talents in the church's service? Spreading the 'Gospel' (don`t get too hung-up over that word, it`s not a holy one, it comes from Anglo-Saxon 'god spell' which means quite simply 'Good News') .......and the good news is the story of Jesus and his teaching about God, Himself and the 'Kingdom of Heaven'. One of our great tasks as Christians is to bring other people into the club - so that they too can work on these tasks and then we shall have made progress to that day when in the words of that lovely Epiphany hymn 'The glory of God shall cover the earth as the waters cover the sea' With all good wishes Bernard Rumbold Page 1 FEBRUARY into MARCH CHURCH SERVICES WITH BIBLE READINGS All Services start at 11am except where indicated 3/2/2013 The Presentation of Christ in the Temple [Candlemas] LCP HC 1st Lesson: Malachi 3: 1-5 Epistle: Hebrews 2: 14-end Gospel: St Luke 2: 22-44 10/2/2013 Sunday next before Lent PDS HC 1st Lesson: Exodus 34: 20-end Epistle: 2Corinthians 3:12-4: Gospel: St Luke 9: 28-36 Wednesday 13th February - Ash Wednesdsay. We are a compact group of approximately 15 people praying for members or friends of ASV or indeed for anyone who is in need of our prayers. The list is circulated by myself through email addresses only. I do try to pass on progress reports as well as including new additions. We welcome information from anyone who would like our prayers for themselves at a difficult time or for people they know. All information is treated in strictest confidence and only as much detail as requested will be passed on to members of the Prayer Group and not to the congregation in general. Please feel free to contact me by phone or email if you would like to join us or if you have any requests for prayer With very best wishes to all for the year ahead Dawn [email protected] 02 40 33 12 21 Names on our Prayer List………. Peter Hutchinson – who is now quite frail and living on his own with Parkinson`s. He needs our continued prayers. Daphne Russell – who is undergoing treatment for cancer. Please also remember John and the rest of the family in your prayers. John Matthews – who is recovering at home with a broken leg, following a serious fall in December Please let Dawn, our Prayer Co-ordinator, have details of any folk you become aware of who need our prayers. 0240 33 12 21, or [email protected]. “Thank you all for your continuing prayers” Page 3 The New Electoral Roll In the old days, people were added and taken off the Electoral Roll every year, rather like a rugby team! A few years ago a new system was introduced. Every three years the old Electoral Roll is completely torn up and a new one compiled - nobody is carried over from the old to the new so....... you won`t be on the new one unless you apply to be. Forms for this are now available from the Churchwardens, Barbara and Joan, and the Electoral Roll Officer, Dawn Collinson [ 02 40 33 12 21]. You can be an active and full member of the church without being on the Electoral Roll of course, but you will not be allowed to vote for Chaplaincy Council members, Churchwardens and Deanery Synod Reps if you are not on it.
