Central Europe
Central Europe WEST GERMANY Foreign Policy and Reunification HE DEADLOCK over reunification remained complete. Moscow repeated in T numerous notes and through its East German satellites that the East and West German governments should get together and form a confederation, with which a peace treaty might later be concluded. Soviet Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan visited Bonn in April 1958 to sign a trade agreement, but had nothing new to offer. The Bonn government, for its part, insisted on free elections for an all-German government and rejected anything implying rec- ogition of the East German regime. Chancellor Konrad Adenauer also severed relations with Yugoslavia in October 1957 when the latter recognized the "Ger- man Democratic Republic." For the time being, the question of reunification was overshadowed by the controversy over atomic arms for the West German army and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces stationed on German soil. George Kennan's suggestion of a disengagement of the great powers from Germany, in his BBC lectures in the autumn of 1957, and Polish Foreign Minister Adam Rapacki's proposal for an atom-free zone in Europe were welcomed by a large part of public opinion as a basis for further discussion. But Chancellor Adenauer rejected the Rapacki plan unconditionally in January 1958. In March 1958 the Bundestag, after a tumultuous debate, em- powered the government to equip the Bundeswehr with tactical atomic weapons. Domestic Political Affairs After his victory in the Bundestag elections of September 1957 (see AMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK, 1957 [Vol. 58], p. 288), Chancellor Adenauer made some minor changes in his cabinet, so that it consisted of fourteen mem- bers of his Christian Democratic Union (CDU-CSU) and two of the small right-wing German Party (DP). -

Doch auch Wolff bekam eine Gegenleistung: 1 Bradley F. THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY PRIDE OF THE FATHERLAND: THE IMPACT OF NAZI RACIAL IDEOLOGY ON THE 3. SS TOTENKOPFDIVISION AARON METHENY SPRING 2015 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in History and Political Science with honors in History Reviewed and approved* by the following: Tobias Brinkmann Malvin and Lea Bank Associate Professor of Jewish Studies and History Thesis Supervisor Michael Milligan Senior Lecturer in History Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT One of the more elite military formations in the German Army during the Second World War was the 3. SS Totenkopfdivision. This unit was originally created out of concentration camp guards and acquired a reputation for fanaticism and brutality during its four years of combat on the Eastern Front. Yet because of its unique relationship with the concentration camp system, Nazi racial ideology negatively impacted the performance of Totenkopfdivision in the field. Already heavy casualties were increased because of the willingness of the soldiers to unnecessarily expose themselves to danger as they believed that they were naturally superior to their Soviet counterparts. Losses proved almost impossible to replace as the concentration camp system retained 35,000 men to serve as guards and, despite numerous protests, refused to release them to serve at the front. Nazi racial ideology also interfered with the equipment that Totenkopfdivision needed to function. Germany was forced to rely increasingly on slave labor, but took no steps to ensure the welfare of those laborers. Skilled Jewish laborers were replaced with unskilled non-Jewish laborers because top Nazi officials wanted to eliminate the Jews, causing constant delays to production. -

A New Perspective on Crepuscular and Futurist Avant-Garde
KNOWLEDGE THROUGH THINGS: A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON CREPUSCULAR AND FUTURIST AVANT-GARDE Danila Cannamela A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Languages (Italian) in the College of Arts and Sciences. Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Federico Luisetti Dino Cervigni Amy Chambless Valeria Finucci Mauro Novelli © 2014 Danila Cannamela ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Danila Cannamela: Knowledge Through Things: A New Perspective on Crepuscular and Futurist Avant-Garde (Under the direction of Prof. Federico Luisetti) This dissertation provides a first systematic English-language study on Crepuscularism. Challenging the common critical understanding that reduces Crepuscularism to a pre-modern poetic regression while identifying Futurism with Marinetti’s hymn to technological progress, I argue that these two Avant-Gardes share similar reactions to the modern bourgeois paradigm, both at a cognitive and ontological level. Overcoming the ghettoization of Crepuscularism as a provincial Italian phenomenon, the first chapter maps the historical and cultural setting of this movement, illustrating its intersection with philosophy, visual arts, and mysticism. In the subsequent chapter, I borrow from Bruno Latour’s thesis that modernity encounters its limits in dealing with cross-category relationships such as nature-culture and human-thing. Crepuscularism expresses its Avant-Garde role by ushering in an anti-modern discourse on hybridization that Futurism inherits and further develops. The third chapter explores how the two currents envision cognition as immediate intuition and participative immersion that entails also ignorance, understood as maximum freedom of knowing. -
